Hello again! I’ve taken both AP Lang and Lit and have had several friends ask me how I understand the material and use it to write a “well-written essay”. I haven’t seen much information here on this topic (I also haven’t really looked oops), so I thought I’d share my method of annotating while reading.

It’s first very important to understand what to look for. AP Lit goes much deeper into the meaning of the literature than AP Lang, but writing focusing on the meaning will get you a better score in any class. I’m still going to separate the two, so there is a lighter, “starter level” let’s call it, in case anybody needs a lighter way to start practicing.

Annotating in the book:

Start by grabbing your book and some stickies (varying sizes and colors always help). As you’re reading, place a sticky note next to anything from the list above, mainly figurative language, or an important quote (something that might show the writer’s style, or a paragraph with a different syntactical style). Simply write on the sticky a quick key word (”simile”,”style”, etc.) or assign a color for each type. The reason to mark in the book is just to easily be able to find it later, not to write a mini essay for every paragraph.

Another good thing to mark as you’re reading are any words that are new to you. Look them up and write the definition for them on a sticky. You can do this in your book (especially if your teacher checks your annotations) or you can do it on a separate sticky or paper. It’s always good to expand your vocabulary.

I also like to write small summaries on a larger sticky note once I finish each chapter and place the sticky on the first page of the chapter. It really comes in handy later.

During/After reading:

Do all of your in depth, class ready notes on a separate piece of paper.

Make a list of characters- write a brief description, relations to other characters, any important events surrounding the character, any important quotes from or about that character. If it’s a book that has an intricate web of relations (like Hamlet or As I Lay Dying), make a map of character relationships. Remember that characterization is not always the same: it can be direct or indirect, dialogue or descriptions. Always pay attention to the way the writer writes about the characters– this could be an important aspect to include in an analysis of the novel.

List any major symbols/motifs- once again sum up what the symbol is. More importantly, explain how it contributes to the meaning of the work.

List a few major literary devices (figurative language, syntax, etc.)- especially if you will be writing an analysis essay, it could be useful to pick a few of the devices you found while reading to expand on in your notes. Give a brief description of the meaning and explain how it is used and why the author included it. The reason the author used it is important, and by organizing your thoughts beforehand, this gives you a way to ask the teacher or discuss it with your class if you aren’t sure why it’s there.

Outside research- if there’s an aspect or allusion in the book you don’t understand, look it up and write a bit about here. Allusions are huge in literature, a good bit biblical, and can be a big part in understanding the meaning and why the author included it. For example, when I read The Kite Runner, I had no idea about any of the cultural aspects the author wrote. When I asked my teacher about it in class, it turned into a great discussion with the whole class, so having this information can be really key.

For AP Lit especially, reading a book is all about answering this question:

Start thinking about the meaning of the work as a whole.

These “meanings” can often be synonymous with the theme of the book. Remember that there can be more than one meaning. The Kite Runner, for instance, is about father/son relationships and betrayal/redemption. Once you’ve finished the book, think about any major events that occurred. They may not all be directly related, which goes to prove further that your idea is one of the themes. This is probably going to be the bulk of what you’ll discuss in class, as it’s the most difficult to understand often times. The meaning of the work is the reason for all of the things you listed on your notes, the whole reason why the author wrote the book. If you can include this in you writing, you will definitely score higher on the scale. Be sure to write them in your notes, along with explanations for each.

After you’re done with the book make a small reference card or note page about it.

You’ll probably be reading several books in the school year, so it is important to be able to remember as many as you can, especially for the AP exams, SAT’s or any other form of open essay you’ll be writing. There is always one open essay on the AP Lit exam, the SAT’s make you choose your own literature to write about, and research papers require a vast range of knowledge. Having this little treasure trove of novels will help you to be a well-rounded, well-read individual. Include basic information about the piece, mainly the characters, plot, and symbols/themes. This information is what you’ll need to include the book in an essay and are also easy to forget. My AP Lit teacher suggested we make these for each book we read and it came in handy as a quick review before the exams at the end of the year. I wrote one of my cards out on paper to be read easier, but you can do it in any format you like. And remember all those stickies you used to summarize each chapter while you read? Don’t throw them out! Stack them all on the back of your card to be read when you want to review the plot.

The simple fact is that people who achieve excellence in their fields didn’t just have a dream. They got up at 4:00 am to practice on parallel bars or had to forgo other desirable activities and paths in order to get in six hours of violin practice a day, or stayed off several million absurd writing advice blogs with their overheated little cliques that dispense useless regurgitated maxims and empty praise and decide to actually confront their own thoughts on a page. Or they read Beowulf and Dante carefully and deeply when they didn’t see any point, since all they were interested in was Sylvia Plath, because someone of more experience and wisdom told them to do so. I don’t know whether we’re overly lazy, stupid, or childish these days. But the idea of preparing oneself for excellence has somehow disappeared. So – my advice to dreamers: Don’t just follow your dreams. Earn them. Do what it takes to achieve it. Work for it. Don’t just sit there and dream because if you do, it will never, ever be yours.

there has been an instance where this happened. it was 1975 and icelandic women decided not to work for one day. working as in cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, doing chores and so on, not only “not showing up to your workplace”. women did nothing that day, except showing up in reykjavik and protesting for gender equality, equal pay and equal representation in parliament, you know, cool stuff. you know what happened? havoc. men were left with food to cook and children they never took care of to pick up from kindergarden and entertain for the day. they went en masse to the food shops buying sausages because they could cook nothing else, they had to bond with children they never spent more than a couple hours a day with. they struggled combining their work day and the domestic tasks they had to sort out. and this just for one day. iceland in 1975 stopped working and things indeed got ugly. so ugly that women in the following decades became woke AF and soon it happened that women became president, took half of the seats in parliament and achieved one of the best living environments in the world. is your astonishment solved now?
