Selfish or Not Selfish? Pause and Think. Lose-Lose.
The purpose of this post is to offer insight into the argument over whether or not suicide is “selfish”.
Do you actually want to take a definitive stance on this argument on social media?? Probably not. Here’s why.
1) How does one generalize every single person who has committed suicide into one group and call them all selfish or not selfish? Everyone’s situation is a little different.
2) If you say it’s selfish, you run the risk of making people who are/were suicidal think that they are selfish for even thinking that way. God forbid, but what if that further hurts them emotionally and they commit suicide.
3) If you say it’s not selfish, you run the risk of convincing people that are suicidal that suicide is “okay” in general. God forbid, but what if you’re giving them one more reason to commit suicide and push them over the edge?
HOWEVER!!!! -
If you have already taken a stance on social media, DO NOT FEEL LIKE I ATTACKED YOU PLEASE!!! My intentions are good and I believe your intentions were good as well. Maybe just be gentle with your opinion.
In conclusion, think before you take a public stance. And if you take the stance, be civil about it. Don’t try to upset people by being overly aggressive.
Thanks.
