Ok, So things are progressing. I finally got to the stage where i was able to turn the first bit of my DIY project on! I wasn't expecting it to work but it not only didn't work it also caught fire a bit.
This was a little worrying but after some slightly panicked research I think that firstly I'm not in any mortal danger and secondly I think I know where I went wrong.Â
So yeah, lets try again....

Panels and Plans
So here is a draft of the panel layout for all the modules I plan to build. After much deliberation I am going to use 3mm thick Perspex rather than aluminium as this will be a LOT cheaper and also I can do it all with a laser cutter rather than having to worry about using drill presses and cutting metal.
The modules from left to right, are
Top row:

"I think one of the most interesting ways of getting a self-composing/playing patch going is to set up a chaotic feedback system. Basically, you start with at least two elements that can be linear, like the outputs of a cycling voltage controllable dual envelope generator (Maths, Envelator, DUSG, 281, etc.) or some sort of other voltage controllable cyclical waveform generators (VCO, Sport Mod, SSG, and the like) and have those two linear elements patched to modulate each other, like a tail chasing oscillator patch (that is, for instance, Maths ch.1 out multed to ch.4 Both mod in, and ch.4 out multed to ch.1 Both mod in, both set to cycle). Then, you need a voltage controllable nonlinear element (Wogglebug, Serge Random Source, Sport Mod patched as a stepped/smooth random source, 265/6, vc slewed sample+hold, etc.) thrown into the feedback loop (in the aforementioned example, take the outputs of the Maths ch.1+4 and the nonlinear element and feed them all into a mixer, a polarizing one is obviously great there, and send the output to VC ins on each of the elements, like Rise/Fall mod in on the maths and the VC in on the nonlinear element). The outputs are taken from the mixer, the individual elements, etc., which gives you a wide range of modulation sources and destinations to patch into/out of other parts of the modular, like other feedback loops, for instance, to create a very complex non-repetitive self-generating system. Attenuation of modulation and the initial settings of each of the elements are obviously paramount here, and the whole combo can result in a wildly large array of complex modulations that won't repeat but will still have some semblance of structure, as opposed to utter randomness or noise, to patch around your system. Also, as with everything in modular synthesis land, there's a total infinitude of ways in which to go about patching this sort of thing. This is basically what's at work in this patch that I posted in the Tunes section but is somewhat relevant, though it may not be the most musical example it does show the really wide range of timbres and modulations you can get with even a relatively simple iteration of this chaotic system concept (the only adjustments I make are to mute different voices/parts in and out on the M9 mixer and to switch modes on the sport mod a couple of times)"

What's (going to be) in the box?
I bought this flighcase from some guy of gumtree for £30. Its big enough for 2 19" rows of 5U modules plus a 1u utility strip. I also bought a second hand Blacet power supply from the B/S/T forum on muffs.Â
I own a wonderful vermona monolancet and my first project is to build my own version of their modular extension. This has been a huge learning exercise as there is no kit or even PCB to start from so I'm on my own. I'll post about my progress soon.

So, synths with banana plugs are just cooler. fact. Buchla, Serge, Bugbrand, modcan A... All good stuff. hehe.
There are actually good reasons besides the fact they look cool enough. and yes you get stackable Euro cables now but they feel totally flakey to me. 'nanas rock.

A quick note about the two formats to the left of MOTM in the picture in the last post: Buchla & Serge. While they lay out I've decided on is very different a lot of the inspiration for the modules (and some direct clones) that I will eventually put behind my faceplates come from these two systems. There is something beguiling about their whole ethos that I think is very cool.Â

The above was my backdrop picture for quite a while as I tried to decide what format in which to build my synth. Eurorack (second from left) had been my obvious first choice when I was drooling over buying a system because of the huge choice of modules. However, in the DIY world its up to you how you build and I always thought Eurorack was too small and fiddly. After much deliberation I’ve decided to aim somewhere between modcan A (third from right) and MOTM (5th from right).
Basically I wanted large format so that I could still hit the right buttons after a few beers but I wanted to cram as many features in as possible so the thing remained portable. Also I want it to have banana jacks - more of which later.

A bit of Backstory
I have been somewhat obsessing about modular synthesisers for about a year. I'm lucky enough to have access to a Nord Modular G2 through my university and since nobody else seemed all that bothered I've basically had it to my self for the last year and a bit. It is a wonderful machine and I've learned a great deal from it but pretty early on it became apparent that I wanted to get my hands on the real thing.
After a spout of gearlust and wasting far to much time on http://www.modularplanner.co.uk/ and muffwiggler.com I realised that this was counter productive considering the huge cost attached to buying a system and the general nature of Eurocrack.
I decided it would be healthier and all together more zen to try to teach myself electronics and build my own.
Happily there is an amazing online community of very clever people in the DIY synth world, and while I still spend far too much time on muffwiggler.com I'm now actually learning stuff. So, here we go.
