Let us toast to animal pleasures, to escapism, to rain on the roof and instant coffee, to unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music and warm bodies and contraceptives… and to the “good life”, whatever it is and wherever it happens to be.

Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won’t have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren’t even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they’re doing it.

You were in the world and. More slowly now I am so fasted now so. Long it’s been without you, if you ever read this you were what. I was dreaming of this welt, to know it before. It comes like love I loved your empty spaces, saved them a little like. The sea it’s dying, believe me, long ago today I was. Fond of saying time is just wandering away, love, you heard me once say I am the lost shiny thing you were. Designed for this decade, jumped hoops to get me and picture it, got through but not this I’m not through and. I will not miss this big sadness or. How I heard your body break into such. Fragments toward what. Bewilder meant.

In France
Hazy white surface of a sand dune splitting open, showering a group of six in dust that coruscates scarlet shades, colonizing a family of wretched individuals without their rights being separated from their faces;
I read a book on the Comanche Empire because I miss a home I am not from, and when I stare out the window believing I am almost enough rain to become a cloud, your face stretches my sight.
Your chest heaving upward, your stomach expanding before your last aria in the Carthage Opera house where I believed we could be counterpoint.
I take the sheets off my bed every Sunday morning in France and peer out the window before the acrylic canvas pours leaves—emerald fading momentarily like a black lung, volumes of Encyclopedias piling uncontrollably, masts of ships broken by years at open sea—onto the streets.
For the first day in France I did not know about official Taxi stands, or the texture of reflective roads, and feminine skin that moves when a woman brushes her teeth and my perspective is that of a mirror she does not look at, but
all of the street corners in this country remind me of your handwriting with its puddling g’s and r’s that sew my legs into turntables spinning arbitrarily.
Wherever I walk a shadow—a spout of aeipathy runs rampant—rains like photographs overwhelmed by bokeh, and I petition all lampposts to never shadow me.
In France I come to be forgiven.
When you crept into me last night I was making an Atlas of your body, or at least planning to, but each time I drew your home town in between your shoulder blades I kept thinking about someone else kissing in between your shoulder blades, and now I am sitting outside writing texts I'll never send, which is probably what you want. I keep outlining you in my eyes, stamping your presence as ghost light from lampposts in foggy snow. I keep seeing you walk towards me with only your gossamer hair covering your frame, and I say, "darling, put some clothes on." You look bitter, but you look happy and you say, "I have come to inform you love is easy to lose." I open my eyes in hopes I will not remember you.

Dear Stranger,
I learned a lot from how you handled the man who sat next to you on the train. His eyes were frayed, and each time he spoke you could see dark teeth in the back of his mouth, like the eyes I drew in kindergarten without color; only with black pupils. He spit on you as he spoke, murmuring about his dog, about his mother, about his dying mother, about how he didn't have enough money for the $11.75 train to Pleasant Prairie and was it all right if he borrowed some? He could get your address and send you money when he had it on him, promise, promise, but no Stranger, you took out your wallet and passed him a twenty dollar bill right before the next stop, shook his hand, and walked out as he kept asking for your address and saying God bless you.
God bless you Stranger,
Nicholas
