Ask and you shall receive! Here is a WIP Wednesday for With My Heart on a Trigger. Bit of a longer one since it’s taking me 12 years to update.

“The kitchen,” Dick said, angling his head back to the right. “Alfred.”

Jason clenched his jaw and bounced on the balls of his feet before he shook his head. Dick was his priority. He couldn’t risk it. “Alfred’s not the target,” Jason said. “Either Bruce has already evacuated him, or he’s got a shotgun. Either way, he’ll be fine.”

Dick coughed out a laugh, but his gaze lingered toward the kitchen. Jason sighed. “Dick, we have to go.”

“I know. You’re right, I just—”

A figure rushed into view at the end of the hallway, gun lifted. Jason grabbed Dick’s arm and shoved him forward. The blast rattled down the hall, and Jason staggered as the impact caught him high in the right shoulder.

I definitely meant to respond to this much earlier, but what even is time anymore? Anyway, I assure you that your messages in my inbox screaming about my chapters is always the highlight of my day / week, and I will never get tired of them. They’re delightful.

Roy has been the unexpected standout in this fic, not going to lie. He kind of just showed up in the first scene with Bruce at Jason’s office, and I was like ‘sure, that’s a fun little cameo.’ And now here we are.

Bright side of my terrible time management, it’s Wednesday again, so have another WIP snippet.

“All right, Goldie. You remember how this works?”

“Follow your lead, move where you move, run when you say run,” Dick said. “That about cover it?”

WHY WOULD YOU HURT US THIS WAY????

Jason making jokes that he’s “rusted to the floor” and Roy hating it followed by Dick telling Roy “oh he’s still human he needs sleep” and ROY TRIPPING LIKE HELLO DICK MY BBY BOY YOU DONT KNOWWWWWW. All these small ways you write dick as just so innocently unaware of this big massive thing but that’s because he’s being kept from it!!!! BRUCE I SWEAR I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE LOGIC EVEN WAS. WHY LIE TO THEM BOTH. BRUCE MY GUY.

Also I’m SO WITH ROY BECAUSE BRUCE HAS DONE A NUMBER ON JAY and I LOVE how you wrote the subtle intricacies of Bruce being protective over Jay whether it was when he got made at Vicki or his Rage and Shock at the auditor, but also show how he HAS messed up in this universe too with Jason!!!! It’s so wonderful how you can write a complicated relationship that feels true to their canon even in an AU!!!!!!

also dick being haunted by what he said to Jason????? Dick admitting to himself he was lying???? He’s still in love???? Both of them SIMULTANEOUSLY thinking about their last time together while dick showers and Jay updates Roy? You’re killing me dude….. like you write emotion SO WELL!!!!

But the absolute masterclass of this chapter really was when dick is showing his tech and Jason’s brain goes Speci “men” because not only did you veer into a memory, but that specific cut off at MEN was like OH JAYS THE SPECIMEN and it just fits so well with his struggle with accepting his own humanity that Roy clocked, versus being literally talked about like an inanimate thing….his monologue about requiring the tech coming at the cost of losing a tangible part of yourself, like the damage that would to to someone psyche…… but also, Dick literally saying about his YPDATED tech mind you that “my tech is good but it’s not THAT good, you’d need Divine Intervention” meanwhile HE DOESNT KNOW HES JUST VIVISECTED JAY ON SCREEN AS AN EXAMPLE? And that Jays running on Dicks OLD tech, like it really was Divine Intervention!!!!! AND ROY. Like seriously I love Roy so much!!!! He’s one of my favorite characters and the way you write him and Jay is Chefs kiss! Roy being so hellbent on reminding Jay he’s important and still human and irreplaceable, he’s Roy’s best friend! THEYRE A SET YOUR HONOR! Roy saving Jay in this story is literally analogous to RHATO 25 and him coming in to save Jay!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dickie is going to lose it. When he realizes when Jay almost died he’s gonna lose it that he told him he wished he was dead.

I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! Does Roy tackle the Doctor? Does Jay burst In? Does Rick finally find out? DO WE FINALLY FIND OUT WHY BRUCE DID ALL THIS?

Okay, so I hoarded this to myself for a week, because it was just SO NICE!!! And I am having a WEEK. (Let’s be real, every week is a WEEK these days.) But I digress. I have read this comment like ten thousand times by this point, and I’m really no closer to forming a coherent response.
