Fallen London Festive Fanart Competition

The festive season is always a bustling time in Fallen London. ‘Snow’ will be falling. Mr Sacks will be hitting the pavements, looking for gifts for its sack. Truly a time of goodwill to all, &c.

In celebration of the season, we’re hosting a fanart competition! The theme is:

Just A Typical Neathy Christmas

Both digital and physical media are accepted (providing you can share the latter digitally), and we’re accepting photography as a form in its own right. Please note that AI generated entries are not being accepted.

The prize will be a Rubbery Plongeur, one of the rarest companions in Fallen London, who will come and wash all of the dishes left over from your revels. There are fewer than a dozen of these fellas in circulation, so a truly special prize indeed. There will be a minimum of seven winners.

Those of you who think you can’t draw: don’t be disheartened. As ever with our fanart competitions, it’s interpretation of the theme that we’re judging on. You’ll find that charm, character and a have-a-go spirit will get you a long way. (And when all else fails, make us laugh.)

Honestly, i respect the hell out of just how involved the game forces you to be with seeking mr eaten

Like, when i first started playing, i was having a good time, yknow? Then i discovered u could seek mr eaten, and like, im curious, of course im curious, but theres piles of warnings on that story and when i went to look it up as like, idk risk investigation, i found out that (spoilers btw) it would lose me my character, like my character would just be gone, idk how or why and i dont want to know without seeing it myself, but i knew my character would be for all practical purposes gone if i did it

And like, by this point i was already attached, yknow? I liked this character, i was doing my best, i was being a slut down in veilgarden and trying to become a master criminal on the side, i was having fun and way too emotionally attached to this character to sacrifice them, yknow

But the mystery, the intrigue, what in the name of the masters happened in the seeking mr eaten story???? I had to know

So what i did, was i made a seperate account, a sacrificial lamb, if you will, specifically to seek mr eaten with, i thought that id just dive directly into seeking mr eaten and like, kill off this character or condemn them or whatever horrid fate would happen to them, and I'd get to know the mr eaten story without risking my emotionally invested account, pretty standard strat in these kinds of risk storyline yknow, just make a throwaway to experience it with

Except! Except! That didn't work!

See, to seek mr eaten, you need high stats, you need resources, you need knowledge, you need a large variety of things that u just dont have and dont have the ability to get in the early game, i didnt get anywhere at all by trying to jump right in, my sacrificial lamb could not be sacrificed

So i start playing with her, and playing, and im choosing choices i didnt in my first go and focusing on stats i hadnt on my other account, and suddenly im invested in this character too, they arent a sacrificial lamb anymore, they came down to the neath to hunt down their nemesis, they were a mother whose child was murdered, she was ruthless and practical, cruel at points but not without reason, had a soft spot for children, i had like a whole mental storyline for her

And i went oh. Oh.

Fallen london absolutely forces you to get invested in your characters before youre allowed to seek mr eaten, they will not allow you to remain distant, the really extremely common strat that works in any other game to experience the 'bad route' by making a stupid trash character just wont work, is absolutely foiled!, by fallen london

Fallen london gives you a route it says will take everything from you, and then forces you to gather things to lose if you want to experience it, and i respect the hell out of that

Liam is in Flute Street to befriend a new dog, and I just… have such mixed feelings about Flute Street

The journey down is kind of neat! And there is some cool lore about Flukes and amber and previous cities. It’s an interesting concept for sure.

But also. It’s just a really long carousel and most of it is repetitive (after you’ve read the handful of storylets the first time) and unrewarding, except for like 3-4 actions at the end. And somehow it does little to give the rubberies much meaningful characterization?

Like this is one of my least favorite pieces of writing in the game

Why?? Why don’t they get to have their own culture??

What if I want to do in-game anthropological fieldwork with the rubberies. What then.

this is explained in the ES For a Dream of Innocence, actually - the Rubbery Men are forbidden from engaging in art and culture of their own by the Flukes, because they were created solely to infiltrate human society and the Flukes don't like their creations to engage in free will. in the aforementioned ES the PC visits a secret Rubbery art collective (though established by a human, who is pretty condescending and saviour-y about the whole thing -

"The Rubbery Men are the slaves. Both they and their masters come from far away. The Rubbery Men were made to infiltrate human society, and have no culture of their own. They have no poetry, no philosophy, and no politics."

"I have gathered the few Rubbery Men I could find with a spark of will to them, and brought them here. In The Marais they can live free from their masters, and become something better and more worthy than they are."), and of course Helicon House has that storyline where the Tentacled Entrepreneur allows a few trusted people to see some Rubbery-made art, so it's not like they don't have the CAPACITY (or desire) to produce culture, it's just that Flute Street is fully controlled by the Flukes, so no one is going to defy their will right there in front of them.

For those who may not yet be familiar, (Be)Neath is a fan-made Fallen London ttrpg. It's a free 50-page BPR/CoC adaptation booklet that you can find online at the Homebrewery (works best with Chrome) or download as a PDF from Google Docs.

To play (Be)Neath, you'll need some basic knowledge of the BRP/CoC game system. If you're new to it, you can check out the official CoC Quick Start Rules, just in case!

We're also working on a separate Hallowmas adventure module (which we're currently playing) and a full scenario (scheduled for next year after our usual D&D Christmas adventure). These will be released (always for free!), along with updates to the intro booklet, after we've completed the respective beta-testing runs.

A Hallowmas Lunch Party in the Neath

I must be COMPLETELY out of my mind, but once the beta-team agreed to a costumed game-session for Halloween on November 1st, I felt I just HAD to serve them a Neath-themed lunch. 🍄🍞

The starters buffet looked like this.

Needless to say, I will be happy to post/share all of the recipes in another post if people are actually interested.

Truth being, it took about 10 hours to prepare everything (over the course of two days, as I needed sleep in between!) but you should have seen their faces!

It was definitely worth it.

Oh, and the game session was fun, too. Although I keep making notes about bits and rules I want to tweak in the future. That's what beta-testing is for, after all. 😊

But especially, the costumes! 🎩

An Incident In Irrigo

I recently completed a module (adventure, for the D&D crowd) named An Incident In Irrigo, for @triskaideka-13's Call of Cthulhu scenario BeNeath!

This module is intended for relative newcomers to the world of Fallen London or Sunless Seas, and as such doesn't rely on either the Keeper or the players having a deep knowledge of the lore (though there are hooks to allow for some extra stuff there, if the Keeper wants to.) There's also a bit of friendly advice on how to run the module included, much of which is applicable to mystery stories in general.

Introducing our second player's self-portrait! Their character is quite... intricate, and I must say I'm both impressed and intrigued (though not without a humorous touch of worry).

Enoch

(a.k.a. The Timeless Prophet)

Enoch, a living relic shrouded in ancient bandages, defies any attempt to determine his exact age or origin. His figure is that of a tomb-colonist, his mummy-like visage concealed by the wrappings that hold the secrets of countless forgotten years. While male in form, his essence remains enigmatic, blending the temporal and the timeless.

None other than the biblical patriarch of pre-flood times (or so he believes!) Enoch's history stretches far beyond the typical limits of human memory -a tapestry woven across epochs and dimensions, reaching back to a time long before the conception of the city of London. Millennia ago, charged with a divine mandate to eradicate a new Tree of Knowledge planted by Adam in a hidden, godless land, he ventured into the abyssal depths of the Neath, making his way to the city of Uruk. Here, a god-appointed sentinel in a godless realm, he embarked on a new journey. Over centuries, guided by his faith, he slowly traversed the Uterzee to Irem’s House of the Amber Sky, seeking a means to thwart the planting of this forbidden tree through the dreamscapes of Parabola.

However, the realm of dreams proved to be an ever-shifting labyrinth. Lost in a tapestry of realities, Enoch's connection to his divine purpose was severed, and his mind became entangled as threads of countless timelines weaved patterns beyond his comprehension. The river of time carried him through aeons until, miraculously, after millennia of wandering the ethereal realms, he returned to the physical world, resting within a tomb laden with opulent treasures in the Forgotten Quarter of London.

This resurfacing was not without challenges. Unfamiliar with his archaic speech, Londoners regarded him with disgust and distrust. Yet, his regal bearing and the shimmering riches he possessed enabled him to carve a place for himself in London's shadowed heart, securing a Family Crypt where he could rest and begin piecing together the fragments of his past.

Finally, after a few months, Enoch's true awakening arrived through the serendipity of a sunbeam escaping a mirrorcatch box, piercing through the shadows of his existence. This celestial ray penetrated the fog of his memories, bestowing upon him a vision that bridged the chasm between his fragmented existence and his divine purpose. His visions, while still chaotic and disjointed, began to coalesce into a new, cohesive narrative.

With each passing day, Enoch's understanding of his purpose deepened. Although his connection to the "real" world remained veiled by a perpetual haze typical of minds returning from the ethereal expanse, he embraced his role as a Prophet in London's gaslit streets. He bore riddles and enigmatic messages, remnants of his time in Irem and Parabola. His words, born from the blurred lines between realms, resonate with those who seek meaning beyond the mundane. His existence stands as a living testament to the unfathomable intricacies of the Neath and its countless layers of existence.

A relic of ages past, Enoch stands as a living bridge between the forgotten and the present, awaiting the moment when his visions will guide him toward his destiny.

He was told a sign would come, and he would soon find a party to complete his divine mission. He waits.

Yet, beneath the layers of aristocratic refinement lies a clandestine passion that ignites Harold's nights. He is drawn to the occult and the esoteric, an affinity that he keeps well-hidden from the prying eyes of London's elite. In the dimly lit corners of hidden libraries and whispered conversations, he immerses himself in the mystique of the Neath, seeking secrets that lie beyond the boundaries of the mortal world.

Harold's ambitions stretch further than the family's flourishing business. As the clock ticks in the shadowy corners of Victorian London, Harold Floofbert de Whiskersy endeavors to master not only the intricacies of the family's textile empire but also the hidden mysteries of the Neath. Driven by a desire to intertwine the arcane and the practical, he walks a fine line between the light of his day-to-day life and the powerful allure of the Correspondence. Will he succeed in weaving his fate into a tapestry that marries the realms of business and the occult? Only time, and the fickle fortunes of the Neath, hold the answer...

Here comes a FREE 50-page custom scenario booklet for BRP / Cthulhu TTRPG based on the lore of #fallen london, a.k.a. your latest unofficial guide to the (be)Neath. A couple of things to keep in mind:

Just so you know, the scenario hasn't gone through the whole playtesting rigmarole yet.

English isn't my first language, so bear with me if you spot a few quirks here and there.

While I've had a blast with Sunless Sea and MoTR, I had to dive into Fallen London wikias to fill in the lore gaps.

The artwork belongs to @failbettergames, except for a handful of images conjured up by Midjourney AI: page 3 (every single one), pages 9-11 (all the portraits), pages 12-17 (yep, all of them), and page 18 (featuring Chelonites, Shroomers, Blemmigans), oh, and also page 35.

The map of London on pages 4-5 has been spiced up with extra spots that may come in handy during a game session!

Having said all that, I'm super open to any cool ideas you might have to make this even better.

You can give it a whirl online on the Homebrewery right now (works best with Chrome).

But if you prefer the Google Docs route, I've also got you covered!

Oh, and there's more! I've started cooking up a complete campaign "Keeper's Guide" to go hand in hand with this booklet. Winter will be the time when we kick off play-testing for that one. So, if you're game, it might be around a year before I can dish it out, along with any tweaks to the custom rules to keep things balanced. Yeah, I know, time flies when you're having fun, right?
