Education xChange
Design Thinking Conference at the U-M Ross School of BusinessÂ
January 23, 2015
This one day event was organized jointly by U-M with local tech companies actively presenting and showing demos. Assessment, Technology vs Instructional Design, Games for Education, and K-12 education were themes visible throughout the talks.Â
The keynote highlighted Googleâs past, present, and future with education. The case of a geography teacher from Grand Rapids visiting CERN in Switzerland, and doing a Google hangout with his class while in the CERN reactor, as he biked along the accelerator was an impressive idea. It highlighted Googleâs commitment to 10X improvements, not small incremental improvements in technology available to the masses. Speakers were Michigan alumni, working at Google. U-M faculty like Barry Fishman and Perry Samson presented and/or participated in panels on improving education. I learnt that Dr. Fishman (School of Ed) led President Obamaâs digital education initiative planning team. Nice.
Overall, the resounding message said: technology is a means to the end of quality education. Teaching and assessment design matter much more than technology, and Jordan won a Samsung Galaxy tablet in Googleâs end-of-keynote raffle.Â
Remodeling the City with @dearaujo
To see more of DĂŠcioâs remodeled city scenes, follow @dearaujo on Instagram.
Architect DĂŠcio AraĂşjo (@dearaujo) fuses photography and digital art to remodel his hometown of SĂŁo Paulo. By infusing wildlife and nature into urban scenes, DĂŠcio creates montages entirely on his phone to express a different perspective on daily urban life. âI try to capture the city in unusual ways so that people might become more critical of the spaces in which they live,â he says.
DĂŠcioâs photography joins his passion for architecture, which began when he was a young boy. âI used to study the colorful materials construction companies handed out at stoplights to advertise new homes,â he recalls. âI had notebooks where I would create blueprints of apartments and houses.â
When he walks through the city, DĂŠcio pays attention to the contrasts, disorder and chaos as a source of inspiration. âI believe we are responsible for the cities we live in and it is our duty to care for and preserve their identities,â he says. âWe can make them safer, more equitable and attractive. My hope is to show this in its entirety through my photos.â

Fantastic stakeholder management in the subway construction project. This construction is happening in a residential neighborhood of Rio - what you see here is the perimeter fence decorated and cleanly labeled; walkways made safe. What's not in the photos? Large noise reduction barriers and a valet parking service, as the street parking was taken away.

Betting against ourselves: Why stakeholders work against initiatives that benefit them in the long run
Smart people know that most projects and change initiatives have the odds against them. This is known by worldwide project failure rates of about 60% and about 90% in clinical and translational research.Â
Hence, it's a safer bet for stakeholders, to bet against projects. Whether it's opposition parties or entrenched doubting stakeholders, it is personally profitable to bet on failure, rather than betting on success - as it does involve staking one's reputation.
Failure of the project, being more likely, keeps the average stakeholder in the position to say, haha, I told you so.
Success on the other hand, gives them an opportunity to claim they helped with risk management by exposing key issues, when in fact, they were not providing any helpful criticism.Â
Bottomline, it's the nature of the world to incentivate sabotage and unfounded skepticism. So haters gonna hate, no matter what.

Newtonâs third law says that forces come in equal and opposite pairs. This means that when air exerts lift on an airplane, the airplane also exerts a downward force on the air. This is clear in the image above, which shows a an A380 prototype launched through a wall of smoke. When the model passes, air is pushed downward. The finite size of the wings also generates dramatic wingtip vortices. The high pressure air on the underside of the wings tries to slip around the wingtip to the upper surface, where the local pressure is low. This generates the spiraling vortices, which can be a significant hazard to other nearby aircraft. They are also detrimental to the airplaneâs lift because they reduce the downwash of air. Most commercial aircraft today mitigate these effects using winglets which weaken the vorticesâ effects. (Image credit:Â Nat. Geo./BBC2)
Congratulations! You're A Prairie Home Companion host Garrison Keillor. You're happiest when the ground is covered in snow and there's a book of poetry on your lap. You have legions of fans, most of whom are Lutheran.
A bazinga conversation, many years ago, at a Memorial Day camping trip
Friend: Why can't you find a job in the automotive sector in Detroit?
Me: Because, my visa is "exempt", i.e. I can transfer my permit to not-for-profit employers only.
Friend: But Ford, GM and Chrysler haven't turned a profit, so....

Sherlock Meets Slapstick, AC Doyle turns in his grave.
Genius is found at the intersection of different domains, someone wise from the recent past has stated. When creating a successful and engaging identity, nothing is more creative than mashing up contrasting genres.
Jim Carrey does it brilliantly in Ace Ventura: Sherlock Holms + his  own brand of physical comedy.Â
Think what two interest domains in your life can help each other? Ideas from which may cross over to the other and create something original and inspired?Â
Write an awesome Facebook Business Page "About" Section
Recently one of my favorite clients was struggling with writing a About paragraph for her Facebook business page and needed motivation. I decided to use storytelling to motivate her to come up with a compelling paragraph:
âImagine you are unloading your groceries and your two kids are bawling in their car seats as you hurriedly ferry the bags between your home and the car. A neighbor who knows a little bit about your services, interrupts your anxious task. She mentions that she has a party coming up and was looking for help with the themed decoration. She wants to know what you do, without taking too much of your time. You want to excuse yourself and get back to her as soon as youâre settled in, but she is off shopping herself. What do you tell her in a minute?â
This is, of course a variation on the theme, âelevator pitchâ that angel investors like to hear first and and prospective customers would want to know at first contact.
Result of the storytelling approach to motivate my client was positive; she had very few questions as she went about writing up the metadata that makes a Facebook Business Page a better one.
Balanced higher education creates professionals who understand the ecosystem to which they belong. This includes a good knowledge of interfaces, overlaps and boundaries with other professions. Bad professional education teaches every profession to believe in their infallibility as the last saviors of humanity, be it engineers, doctors, accountants or what have you. I wish upon the next generation a balanced education system that imparts knowledge without hot air.

Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline is divided into five parts. Part I is devoted to laying out the argument that we are the creators of our own reality, i.e., that the solutions to the problems that we face are at our reach, that we have the power to control our destinies.Â
