When a corporation offers to pay a fixed amount for travel expenses, it's generally understood that the "travel expense" label is just an informal way to say it's a small nominal amount compared to what their time would otherwise have been worth. It's not them offering to pay for the person's literal travel expenses, otherwise the accounting department would be requiring that the person provide receipts, ticket stubs, and other proof of travel costs for the exact amount to be reimbursed. It's generally understood that "travel expenses" is not going to be what's written on the cheque (or transfer slip). It's going to be written down as a consultation fee or something that, in accounting terms, can justify money being paid to an individual.

The author (and the fans) getting all hung up on this one little label is really much ado about nothing. The ironic thing is that the author didn't even directly voice any claims regarding intellectual property, so if her misgivings were really all about this little accounting misunderstanding, it really blew everything up way out of proportion. (Unless, of course, she was only using it as a ruse to indirectly rile people up over the IP issue, in which case it would have been an ingenious move on her part.)

Sorry for the rant, I know it's preaching to the choir, but I just had to get it out somewhere. But now that we're here, let me also just say I'm kind of sick of people invoking the Mae Yua cat incident to paint the crew as evil cat-poisoning animal abusers when what happened was that they (ignorantly or wilfully) allowed the cat's handler to sedate the cat (something they claimed they were experienced in doing) despite being unqualified to safely do so, and initially reacted lightly to it. It deserves criticism, of course, and things are better for that, but people really are twisting things too far with this.
