Something I find interesting abt quark is when he has that dream where he imagined the first grand nagus talking to him and he reveals that the rules of acquisition were a marketing scheme to sell books. and it may or may not be true bc this is all happening in quark's mind but quark's reaction to it is "you mean it was a marketing ploy 😦 they're not even real???" as if he hasn't based his entire life (or tried to) around the concept of treating life and everything in it as an opportunity for personal profit. he's not even the least bit impressed that someone managed to sell a book so well that it changed the financial and also religious culture of his whole planet.

But that's probably the thing isn't it, the rules of acquisition became a religious text. a good ferengi who follows the rules of acquisition will have the opportunity to go to the divine treasury after they die and buy their way into heaven, right. the idea that the rules could be fake is probably a huge shove to, not just quark's views on how the world of commerce works in ferengi society, but also his religious views. and this could partially explain a lot of things regarding quark's actions later in the series, like remaining conservative even while rom and nog and his mother and the nagus change and become open minded. he still believes in the divine treasury. he thinks his immortal soul is on the line. and his family's

#i wish ferengi religion was focused on more as a serious plot point #its easy to forget how much religion impacts quarks choices and how serious it is to him and other ferengi characters #because it just doesnt come up unless theres a joke abt it #could have also been an exploration of how different members of a religion will have different relationships with and interpretations of it #and will interpret things in ways that justify their own views and motives #eg how rom and nog still believe in the great material continuum despite not being traditional ferengi. can we explore that more please??#it would have paired nicely with the strong presence of bajoran religion in the show #star trek #ds9 #quark #ferengi

I just woke up from a dream in which I had a baby ferengi. but in this dream the ferengi begin life in larval form. it was a small squishy pangolin shaped thing with ridges on the sides of the head which would become ears. and it needed to cling to my back to be carried around. except this one was stupid and kept falling on the floor and I had to pick it up and put it back and I was worried that it was going to get shaken baby syndrome because I didn't have proper swaddling clothes to keep it on my back with because I wasn't a ferengi I was just some human shmuck who somehow got stuck taking care of a ferengi larvae.
