Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ mostlyĀ mumbling,Ā somethingĀ aboutĀ ā¦Ā uh,Ā youĀ saidĀ toĀ waitĀ upĀ atĀ oneĀ point,Ā iĀ think.Ā āĀ Ā Ā
annieāsĀ smiling,Ā tellingĀ jackĀ aboutĀ hisĀ sleep-talkingĀ habitĀ almostĀ happily,Ā asĀ ifĀ itĀ wereĀ aĀ simple,Ā endearingĀ quirk,Ā despiteĀ whatĀ itĀ mayĀ suggestĀ aboutĀ hisĀ underlyingĀ anxieties.Ā Ā jackĀ movesĀ aroundĀ inĀ hisĀ sleep,Ā sometimes,Ā tooĀ āĀ whenĀ heāsĀ dreamingĀ DEEPLY,Ā itĀ seemsĀ āĀ heĀ canĀ beĀ aĀ veryĀ physical,Ā restlessĀ sleeperĀ atĀ times.Ā butĀ annieĀ leavesĀ thatĀ partĀ out.Ā jackāsĀ alwaysĀ beenĀ aĀ veryĀ physicalĀ person,Ā anyhow,Ā itĀ shouldnātĀ beĀ newsĀ toĀ himĀ ā¦Ā andĀ perhapsĀ itāsĀ painful,Ā too,Ā whatĀ heāsĀ doingĀ inĀ hisĀ dreams.Ā Ā sheĀ canĀ onlyĀ imagineĀ theĀ typesĀ ofĀ thingsĀ heāsĀ seenĀ ā¦Ā theĀ typesĀ ofĀ dreamsĀ heāsĀ dreamingĀ ā¦Ā andĀ sheĀ doesnātĀ wantĀ toĀ makeĀ himĀ rememberĀ themĀ again.Ā butĀ theĀ talkingĀ seemsĀ harmlessĀ enoughĀ toĀ beĀ aĀ goodĀ icebreakerĀ inĀ theĀ morning.Ā annieĀ canātĀ helpĀ butĀ mentionĀ that.
sheāsĀ wrappedĀ ( swallowedĀ up,Ā ratherĀ )Ā Ā inĀ aĀ plaidĀ sweaterĀ thatĀ isĀ clearlyĀ notĀ herĀ own,Ā aboutĀ fourĀ sizesĀ tooĀ large,Ā headĀ andĀ shoulderĀ leaningĀ againstĀ theĀ doorwayĀ toĀ theĀ kitchen.Ā sheāsĀ smiling,Ā gently,Ā watchingĀ jack;Ā orĀ theĀ backĀ ofĀ hisĀ head,Ā rather,Ā makeĀ coffee,Ā holdingĀ herĀ ownĀ store-boughtĀ redĀ mugĀ inĀ aĀ completelyĀ sleeve-coveredĀ hand.
āĀ myĀ brotherĀ usedĀ toĀ talkĀ inĀ hisĀ sleep,Ā Ā āĀ annieĀ continues.Ā Ā āĀ whenĀ weĀ wereĀ kids.Ā Ā sometimesĀ weādĀ haveĀ toĀ shareĀ aĀ roomĀ onĀ campingĀ tripsĀ ourĀ dadĀ madeĀ usĀ goĀ on.Ā heādĀ alwaysĀ talkĀ aboutĀ reallyĀ weirdĀ things.Ā Ā itĀ wasĀ soĀ funny.Ā āĀ annieĀ crinklesĀ herĀ noseĀ inĀ aĀ humorousĀ smileĀ asĀ sheĀ remembersĀ it.Ā Ā āĀ oneĀ timeĀ heĀ saidĀ theĀ nameĀ ofĀ theĀ girlĀ heĀ likedĀ andĀ iĀ didnātĀ letĀ thatĀ goĀ forĀ months.Ā itĀ wasĀ reallyĀ amazingĀ leverage.Ā āĀ Ā sheāsĀ stillĀ smilingĀ asĀ sheĀ rambles,Ā tickledĀ atĀ theĀ memoryĀ ofĀ jakeĀ mumblingĀ Ā āĀ yes,Ā amandaĀ āĀ fromĀ hisĀ sleepingĀ bag,Ā inĀ hisĀ ownĀ droolĀ āĀ andĀ hisĀ horrifiedĀ faceĀ whenĀ sheĀ hadĀ pokedĀ himĀ aboutĀ itĀ inĀ theĀ morning,Ā laughingĀ manicallyĀ asĀ heĀ chasedĀ herĀ aroundĀ theĀ cabinĀ withĀ threats.Ā Ā oneĀ ofĀ herĀ finestĀ accomplishments.Ā Ā
annieĀ meetsĀ jackāsĀ eyes,Ā then,Ā herĀ ownĀ shining,Ā Ā baskingĀ inĀ theĀ lightĀ ofĀ aĀ victoriousĀ reminisce.Ā Ā sheĀ takesĀ aĀ fewĀ stepsĀ forward,Ā comingĀ intoĀ theĀ kitchenĀ besideĀ him,Ā suddenlyĀ rememberingĀ thatĀ sheāsĀ inĀ theĀ kitchenĀ ofĀ herĀ fairlyĀ newĀ boyfriendāsĀ apartment,Ā andĀ notĀ inĀ aĀ logĀ cabinĀ inĀ theĀ southernĀ californiaĀ mountainsĀ torturingĀ herĀ olderĀ brother.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā soĀ noĀ oneāsĀ everĀ toldĀ youĀ youĀ doĀ itĀ before,Ā huh ?Ā Ā itāsĀ cute.Ā āĀ Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āhuh.āĀ Ā it almost sounds like another hum as it leaves his lips.Ā the word has jack clearing his throat,Ā sleep still clogging his voice,Ā but there's quiet relief as his smile pulls a little wider in theĀ early morning equivalent of a chuckle.Ā even in sleep he has enough sense to be vague ā better to be mildly embarrassed over unintelligible mumbling than nervous over revealing too much of himself.Ā this, their relationship, still feels new.Ā jack can acutely remember being without it.Ā sometimes waking up with the evidence that he isnāt alone anymore sleeping beside him (or on other days,Ā splayed across him) still surprises him.Ā even with what theyāve been through,Ā maybe because of it too,Ā he doesnāt want to upset the balance theyāve found for themselves by bringing up old wounds,Ā especially if he isnāt awake to filter which ones get shown.Ā fortunately her reminder doesnāt dredge up anything from the few dreams he can recall,Ā flashes and blurs that they are.Ā Ā āwonder what thatās about.ā
heās grateful for the change of topic,Ā brief as it is.Ā relaxes further into it,Ā as those fingertips of apprehension fully withdraw.Ā leaving just that sleepy affection in his gaze,Ā watching and listening.Ā like a piano string pulled through the both of them,Ā her key his chord.Ā the latter always reflecting the first.Ā an actual,Ā audible chuckle pulled from him as she rambles.Ā smile turning to a grin for a moment when her nose crinkles.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āyouāre a menace,Ā annie.āĀ jack likes these little glimpses into her life,Ā likes how freely she gives them.Ā Ā āiām guessing he requested a different room after that trip?ā
most mornings he used to rely on instant coffee.Ā some water,Ā a stir.Ā no reason to spend more than a minute in the kitchen before taking flight from the one-bedroom apartment.Ā a perfectly fine mr. coffee relegated to counter decor for years in the name of efficiency.Ā now heās surprised to find the coffeemaker blinking itself back to sleep when he turns around,Ā fresh brew waiting for him it seems,Ā rather than the other way around.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ācute?āĀ he passes a look over his shoulder before moving to fill up his mug,Ā Ā āso what iām getting is i should sleep mumble more often?āĀ and if his grin isnāt visible,Ā it sure is audible.Ā he shakes his head and returns the coffee pot to its place once his cup is almost full.Ā Ā ānever heard about it before.Ā iāve been told i move in my sleep.Ā almost fell off my bunk back in college and my roommates never let me live it down.Ā but no...Ā wasnāt aware i sleep-mumbled till now.ā
