I was warned
The Steam Whistle brewery tour is one of the top 'attractions' we were told to visit in Toronto.Â
Didn't make it onto the tour as it was full, but did get a free sample of their average tasting beer (just ask for it at the bar) and an order of their overpriced pretzel and pickle.Â
It was nice and warm in there, that's what really matters, as my fingers were ready to fall off in the short walk from the CN Tower to there. And maybe their tour is great, or maybe they just get everyone drunk on the tour to get good reviews, which, actually, is great.
Petsitting in Leslieville for these gorgeous fluffy creatures. I am in love with them.Â
Pet-sitting has a great way to see neighbourhoods we would have skipped over or maybe would never even have heard of. Gets us out of central tourist hub hotel/hostel rooms and into usually a cosy house, and of course, there are animals which is a big plus.
Leslieville is really nice, great location close enough to downtown but also has its own chilled-out feel. East > West Toronto.Â

10 mins putting skates on. 10 mins looking for a locker to put shoes in. 5 mins walking like a penguin back to the ice. 15 mins waiting for ice truck to get off the ice. 40 mins skating around like a fish in a bowl on the ice... ok it’s enough.Â

City Hall (the curved tall building) has a decent library open to everyone, with a solid selection of travel canada books to read. We used it to warm up and for the toilet.Â

Moving to live in Canada....
Expectation: Happily ice Skating everywhere in one layer of jeans
Reality: Takes ages to get anywhere on the TTC, everyone sqeezed together and smells a bit damp, and feeling sweaty from the double layers of clothes. The guy on the left genuinely looked so so sad. This wasn’t even rush hour. Rush hour on the TTC is WORSE than London! You cannot move and there is a line 7 people deep on the platforms to get onto the train.Â
Almost every Subway station in Toronto has an old pay-phone. Why?Â
I haven’t seen this many payphones since 1999! Is it becuase these payphones are easier to use than having to sign up for a phone plan here? becuase the telecomms companies are so greedy and generally terrible?
NEVER EVER have I been in a country where it is this hard or expensive to buy a SIM card and just make phonecalls or use my phone. Canada you are crap at this. and don’t blame on it #bigcountryproblems, even Russia and Australia do better.Â
Getting a SIM-card in Canada
When relocating to Canada, the basics to start your new life include, SIN (Social Insurance number), bank account, and of course a SIM card so you can have a Canadian phone number and be able to use Google maps.
I have had over 12 Sim cards from various countries, my experience getting one in Canada has been THE WORST!Â
Whatever way you look at it, getting connected in Canada is going to be expensive. This is due to the big 3 telecom companies holding a monoply and buying out or bankrupting any competition that comes their way (eg. Wind). Cunty. But the pain doesn’t stop at the price, every step of the way is a ball ache.Â
1. Do internet research about which provider has the best coverage and deals. This already takes the top tier, Rodgers, Telus and Bell out the equation as all their plans start at minimum $70 and don’t even include data! Not that it matters, the other companies are still owned by those big 3. Â
2. Go to the Koodo store (owned by Telus) and find out all research was useless as the options change daily and what I wanted is no longer availablw.
3. Trapse round Dufferin mall in Toronto asking all the providers about their plans and deals. Choose Fido based on the guy being nice and offering an amazing pay month by month deal. Realise you can’t sign up as don’t have visa certificate with you.
4. Return to Dufferin mall the next day, with visa certificate. Stealthily avoid the Fido guy to get to the Koodo store to ask if they can match the month by month deal as I didn’t actually ask them the previous day what they had.
5. Koodo shop guy seemingly gives great deal, take the deal.Â
Deal: $45 Month by month no contract, 3 GB data, 500 canada-wide minutes and unlimited texts (as if anyone texts anymore!). Yes, literally by any other country in the world standards, this is actually a shit deal, but in Canada it’s decent.Â
6. THEN BEGINS MY PHONE PLAN NIGHTMARE.Â
10. There would be another 10 points if I went into detail, and maybe I will one day when I’m not so angry about it all. Â
Moral of the story is, DO NOT USE KOODO! They suck! Or at least don’t use the Dufferin mall Koodo store and sign up for anything there. Â
Hooray! Except, actually, it’s a bit horrendous on the streets of Toronto when the snow melts as it turns to ice and brown slush. The snow is pretty for a bit though.Â
is it cold?
That is what I get asked by everyone back home daily. I have been in Canada for 2 days spent a grand total of 5 minutes of those 2 days outside. But for that 5 minutes, I couldn't feel my fingers or toes. At night, as I am sleeping on an airbed, the air in the bed literally turns into minus25 degrees. I have 2 cold sores already. It's cold. BUT, despite that, -25degrees really doesn't feel as bad as I thought it would. It doesn't get into your bones and freeze you core like I imagined it doing. Especially when you stay inside.

About to board. It's 8am. I am exceptionally sweaty thanks to the 3 layers of clothes plus thick winter coat I'm wearing. My hands are raw from carrying 5kg of winter clothes what feels like a million miles through heathrow airport to get to the gate. Can't remember why I am going to Canada in the middle of the worst winter for 100 years.
Canada eh.
Off I go, with 28kg worth of winter clothes and feeling completely unprepared for what is ahead of me. That 28kg also meant that when I got to the airport I was ‘that’ person who had to unpack all my luggage and find enough bags to fit that extra 5kg that I wasn’t allowed in the hold and had to carry as hand luggage. I looked like a bizarre sweaty bag lady walking around Heathrow with 3 layers of clothing, snow shoes, hat, scarf and hands full of bags. It gets better right?
