Yin “Oh, but history moves in such cruel circles” Nezha vs Fang “history moves in such vicious circles” Runin
It’s an interesting difference that the events from Rin’s perspective are vicious, while from Nezha’s it is cruel.
Though cruel and vicious both have negative connotations in their meaning, cruelty is something that is by definition, harmful, while viciousness is not necessarily malicious. Throughout the trilogy we see that Rin’s approach to life is to be vicious as she thinks it’s the only way for her to survive. Because she never had privilege (at least not like Nezha), being kind was never an option. This shows that Rin doesn’t view viciousness with a negative lens, and her calling the cycle vicious reflects how she believes everything that happened was necessary and unavoidable. However, Nezha describing the cycle as cruel shows that he feels as though the suffering brought on to him and others was unjust and unnecessary, which can be contributed to the privilege he grew up with.
