ed and stede both have issues that revolve around having fine things. but ed's thing is that he doesn't think he can have them, and stede's thing is that he doesn't think he deserves them.
ed thinks he will only ever have the things he can take by force and the things you can't, like love, are unattainable for him; stede thinks he is constantly being handed things he did not earn, and that because of that he defiles them by having them. ed thinks he is unlovable; stede doesn't think he's quite exactly unlovable so much as that he isn't worthy of love, and he desperately wants to make himself worthy, so that loving him won't be a burden on those who do it.
