Trans Characters

Why: Crona's sex is canonically considered "unknown" by Soul Eater creator Atsushi Ōkubo as of the series ending. In the original manga Japanese text, Crona is referred to in gender-neutral terms in which does not exist in the English language. In the Funimation dub, Crona is referred to with “he/him” pronouns, but Funimation confirms that the use of masculine pronouns does not define Crona’s sex/gender.

Why: Inukashi is canonically gender ambiguous, and they are referred to a mixture of masculine and feminine language by other characters (e.g., prince, mama). They use the masculine personal pronoun “ore” in the anime, but they don’t refer to themself with any gendered pronouns in the novels.

Why: While Ranka dresses femininely for a job at an okama bar, the narrative of their identity and sexuality fits into that of a closeted trans woman who presents as a cross-dressing gay man.

Why: Haruhi is very gender ambivalent, outright telling the other members of the club that she doesn’t care whether anyone sees her as a boy or a girl, and she dresses in both masculine and feminine clothing.

Why: Fuyuhiko short for a boy his age and is often referred to as “baby-faced,” something he is very insecure about. He often acts impulsively and out of anger, possibly due to trying to fit into hyper-masculine stereotypes and to assert his status as a yakuza member. He is also ashamed of his “feminine” enjoyment of sweets, going as far as to keep it a secret because he sees it as “unmanly.”

Why: Seven usually presents masculine and wears masculine clothes but also enjoys dressing up in feminine clothes and likes to be called pretty when he does

Why: Rei goes to Duel Academy disguised as a boy, but even after it is revealed she is a girl, Rei still interchangeably uses the personal pronouns “boku” (masculine) and “watashi” (feminine)

Why: Yubel is androgynous and characters in the show interchangeably use both she/her and he/him pronouns for Yubel. They also have two VAs (a man and a woman) in the sub, and their voice changes fluidly between being masculine and feminine

Why: Eridan is a canonically nonbinary in the Homestuck canonical multiverse

Why: All three are canonically genderless

Why: She is a trans girl canonically. 

Why: Near has a male birth name but no longer goes by it, appears in both oneshots that take place after the main manga with longer hair and in the 2019 oneshot, also appears to have visible breasts despite wearing a baggy shirt, something new to the 2019 oneshot that makes it seem like Near has started taking estrogen, and characters close to Near no longer refer to Near with he/him and instead forgo pronouns altogether.

Why: He’s a loner with more cybernetic modifications than the average cyborg in the one punch man world and he’s lost his family. He’s on a quest to avenge his family and he’s just trying to be his best possible self. He’s hard on himself and he’s always pushing himself to grow, change and self-actualize. (You don’t start a path of gender transition, knowing the cost, without such powerful intrinsic motives) Although his cybernetics give him great power and self-assurance, they allow him to be who he is and to be more powerful than the average hero in the opm universe, they come with some limitations like having to be put back together again by his Doctor. 

Why: Rejected by his family father, fed to demons, he lived the first years of life in the discomfort of not having skin or normal senses. He fought tooth and nail to get his true body back even while others said his quest was selfish and misguided. 

Why: I headcanon Setsuna as a trans girl.

Barry hasn’t spoken with his mother in decades, ostensibly because of her reaction to him being gay. When Emma asks him what he wore to his prom, he jokes that he wore the same dress she has on. He explains that he dreamt of attending prom wearing a silver tux with a turquoise cummerbund and tie, but he says he didn’t have Emma’s courage and never actually went to prom, even without a date. Despite that, he kept his prom tux for twenty-nine years and has it ready to wear when he is eventually invited to attend Emma’s prom, although it first needs, as he puts it, “major renovations.” He canonically wears a compression undergarment and is one of the shorter adult characters in the show.

Why: In her debut episode, Henri calls herself a Yamato Nadeshiko. In episode 33, she has a full-on dysphoria scene. In episode 42 (lol 42), she becomes a cure when episode 37 had previously stated that pretty cure are the legendary girls.
