heart in throat. or was it stomach? heart somewhere it wasnât supposed to be. it thumped in his chest. it was so loud it disguised the thumps on her door. cool it, matthews. the way heâd left. more than unfair. it was lucy he thought about the most in new mexico. sheâd deserve an explanation at the least. the very least. he knocked away on her apartment door. donât ambush her in the hospital. he had thought. his heart fell back into place once the breeze of the door opening hit him. âhey luce.âÂ
â â I think he might need stitches.â It had been a morning. Things had been going smoothly for once, Amber finally feeling as though she was getting settled into a consistent routine and overall feeling better about doing this by herself. The twins had cooperated, had gotten dressed and eaten their breakfast with no complaints, and she was packing up their bag for daycare when Archer had tripped and fallen directly into her coffee table. Now things were far from smooth, with a squirming and clearly upset Archer crying in her lap as she bounced her leg trying to soothe him. Abigail was in the double stroller beside her doing god knows what on Amberâs phone (but at least she was quiet, quiet was good), all while Amber was trying to talk to the person who had moved the curtain in the emergency room aside. âI cleaned him up best I could at home, but it looks pretty deep.â
dude, donât jump in. you arenât back at work yet. âhey there!â standing on the sidelines was not working for him. a crowded emergency room and a young woman with two children? âcourse he was gonna hop in. he was still a doctor. âiâm doctor matthews, my friends call me garrett. iâm not your doc, but it looked like this little guy had a pretty good bump on his head. thought i could help âtil the pediatrician gets to ya.â he gave amber a smile. âmay i?âÂ
âare you trying to leave her with a scar for the rest of her life?â wes said looking over at the person next to him, who was stitching up what looked to be a cheerleader who mustâve fell. âstop, let me fix it and show you how itâs done properly.â wes got up from his seat, changing his gloves before picking up a new pair of sutures. âsee?âÂ
@traumasstartâ
back in the saddle again! or back in seattle again? doesnât matter. garrett was back at the hospital, but he wasnât officially back at work. donât laugh! the guyâs teaching. yet a smirk ensued. âthey stop teachinâ the basic suture? geez, this place has really gone to hell since i left.â he gave a chuckle.Â
ânext roundâs on me,â meredith tells the person across from her. maybe she knew them, maybe she didnât, but honestly, she was a little too drunk to care. âtequila or vodka?â she shakes her head, âno, scratch that, something fruity, right?â
&& @traumasstart !
cuttinâ back on drinking was a change. less drinking, more talking. the healthier way to cope. who knew, right? a club soda in hand, garrett couldnât resist visiting his favorite watering hole. he had a lot to catch up on. âtempting offer there grey!â garrett flashed a smile her way. âthink iâm stickinâ with the club soda tonight. do i strike you as the fruity kinda guy? always thought i gave off more of a margarita vibe myself.â

below is the same from before <3
BASIC INFORMATION
full name: garrett michael anthony david matthews
nickname(s): matthews, âmadâ matthews (in hs/college)
age: 37
date of birth: october 29, 1983
hometown: charlotte, north carolina
current location: seattle, washington
race/ethnicity: caucasianÂ
nationality: american
gender: cismale
pronouns: he/him/his
orientation: heteroromantic, heterosexual
religion: agnostic
political affiliation: democratic socialist
occupation: attending orthopedic surgeon
living arrangements: alone in a loft, other side of town
emotional stability: he has slipped into depressive episodes in the past because of the loss of his child; typically heâs at an 8, but it can dip quickly
sociability: often isolates after work, living alone, single, etc. he is very good around people though.
garrett matthews was raised in an upper-middle class, happy family. he had a privileged upbringing, access to a quality education, and he didnât want for anything.
garrett matthews met sutton reyes when they were both juniors in high school. they were the picture perfect high school couple, and they decided to marry while in college at age 21. mackenzie mae matthews was born, roughly, nine months later. after graduation, garrett decided to go to medical school.
at 26-years-old, garrett began in the surgical residency program at nyu. shortly after, his daughter was diagnosed with non-hodgkinâs lymphoma.
while mackenzie was sick, garrett spent every spare moment by her bedside. however, for a surgical resident, this did not amount to a lot of time. he began to fall behind in his residency and receive pressure from his superiors to step it up. this is why garrett agreed to be part of an organ recovery team one evening during his second year of residency. he could not turn down anymore opportunities. it was this night that mackenzie took her last breaths and passed away, without her father at her bedside.
mackenzieâs death broke garrett. he felt tremendous guilt. he had abandoned his daughter for a surgery. sutton couldnât even look at him. she hated him, and she told him often. she filed for divorce a few months after mackenzieâs funeral.
garrett started off on a long, complicated spiral. he experienced, what could probably be characterized as, a series of depressive episodes. he began binge drinking. he fell further and further down, always resorting to alcohol to drown away his guilt. he probably would have lost everything if his mentor hadnât eventually pulled him out.
garrett got back on his feet. he dedicated himself to helping other people through his work. he wanted to be the best person he could be--for mackenzie. he started to get his life back together (although he was never able to admit he had a drinking problem...he remains adamant that he is not, nor was he ever, an alcoholic; his problem is âunder control).
when given the chance, garrett moved to the other side of the country to escape some of his more painful memories. he accepted a fellowship at seattle presbytarian before becoming an attending surgeon at seattle grace.
garrett carries mackenzie with him. he is inspired everyday by his beautiful, courageous, generous child. she is why he is so committed to being the kind and caring man he is. he smiles a lot more now. although, at the end of the day, he always goes home alone.
âsounds interesting. donât know if i could afford it, though.â she leaned back against the door, her hands tucked away behind her. max let her gaze wander around the room, not wanting to be accused of staring. she laughed, âi wish.â her life would have looked very different if sheâd been an only child. whether it would be better or worse was up for debate. âitâs definitely not. i recommend it, actually.â she smiled. âwelcome to the team. uh- what team would that be?â
âwe have an early bird special.â what was she talking about? bella untucked her hair from the back of her shirt, combing through with her fingers. âthat bad, yeah?â sibling drama. yuck. better or worse than the parental kind? âiâve got a spare parent if you wanna give it a go.â bella smirked. she began to stuff the ends of her shirt into her pants. âah, iâm sure you do.â her head shook. "i donât discriminate on teams. for work, itâs hr. youâre not a doctor, so whatâs your story?â
âAye well I wasnât too fond of her knowing either,â Lilith said with a small huff, only barely refraining from rolling her eyes right back. âI honestly canât tell if you have such an elevated sense of self importance that you think I want brownie points from you or if you think keeping it from her did me any favours.â
âpretty sure i got the worst of it.â wasnât a great evening. top 10 worst list no doubt. lilith could be thankful for that. bella gripped the counter. head hung down. âwhyâd you want brownie points from me? i meant my mother you dolt.â thereâs that little temper! bella took a deep breath in. âexactly why i thought you wouldâve said somethinâ. unless youâre trying to get away from her. no arguments from me.â
âas long as the reruns are, itâs alive in my heart,â aurora said solemnly. she was a sucker for crime shows, at this point she half considered herself an amateur detective. some day she might just pack it all in and go full jessica jones. âwhich is exactly why they would be really good targets. point proven. check and mate.â she crossed her arms over her chest. or her point was total crap. that could still stand too, especially with her awful technique for keeping information a secret. âwhatever you want iâll try. but if itâs horrible iâm never letting you order lunch again.â she leaned over to peer over the younger womanâs shoulder to make sure it at least looked okay.
âtell me youâre the kinda person who secretly knows how to commit a crime without leaving a trace.â good people to have on your side, bad ones to have as enemies. âiâm keepinâ that in mind.â for no reason. bella laughed. âokay gilmore. you win. iâll keep my eyes open. âcase thereâs a hospital heist. now i kinda wanna watch oceanâs eleven.â this conversation had a lot of influence. bella ordered what she wanted and some options for rory to try. expand the palate. âgotta think outside the bun!â or whatever the slogan was. âif itâs good, youâll never let me buy you lunch again? oh no. whatever will i do?âÂ
Celeste shook her head. âThis is not about you apologizing instead of her, Bella. Itâs about how you should apologize regardless of what Lilith does.â Lilith was a grown adult who she had zero control over. But Bella was her daughter, so the least bit of influence she had there she would use to encourage her to do the right thing in this situation. She was surprised by the sudden anger that seemed to spill out of her daughter, mouth open slightly as she listened to the words. âOf course I recall asking you to join me. While Iâm happy that youâre here, that does not mean you will not be held accountable for your actions!â Life wasnât without consequences. Celeste wasnât going to pretend like it was. âAs a matter of fact, Bella, I am seldom interested in yelling at anyone, least of all you.â She would have gone on, but Bella cut her off, continuing down this jagged path. And then, her breath hitched. The words left her daughterâs lips with such nonchalance, but they hit Celeste like a sucker punch. I know you didnât want me. That wasnât something that Bella had ever said to her before, and it forced the older woman to pause for a moment in the silence. âWh-where did you get that idea?â Her hands clenched together, taking a step forward towards the younger woman. âDonât you ever say that. You are my daughter. I love you more than you could ever understand.âÂ
she felt like a little kid again. bella wanted to stomp off, slam the door shut to her room, and crank the christina aguilera. adulthood sucked. âcan we forgot about it? itâs over. iâm not trying to talk to her again. ever, âkay?â had to be good enough. no talking would be a gift to both of them. celeste invited her, she couldnât deny it. they werenât close enough for that. if bella hadnât screwed up her own deal, she wouldnât even be here. say hello again to guilt. anger mixed with guilt. not the kinda cocktail she planned on this evening. âcouldâve fooled me. all we do is yell, mom.â yeah, she let a mom slip. it showed that was what she wanted to call her mother. had to count for something, even though she wasnât being very forgiving in this back and forth. âi yell at you. you yell at me. dad yells at you. you yell at dad. you yell at me. the cycle hasnât changed since i was wearing footie pajamas. this. this is why i told you no! living like this would make me insane.â hello, bella! this is already how youâre living. she looked at the ground. bella wasnât supposed to say that to celeste. she knew it was true, but she never planned on saying it. out loud was different. her eyes avoided looking at her mother completely as she figured out whether crying or screaming was a better response. or running away. zip on out the door without looking back. âyou donât have to. i get it, a motherâs love, blah blah. i donât know, maybe you do love me, but do you even like me?â she couldnât listen to it when she didnât feel it. âdad told me.â she crossed her arms. no eye contact. bella couldnât. âhe told me you didnât want me. how he had to convince you to have me. well, pressureâs off. you donât have to try so hard at the mother deal. you never wanted to do it, so iâm releasing you.â that hurt.

âIt is not,â He replied, but his sharp tone and short words only proved that Aaron was in fact very uncomfortable with the situation as it was unravelling. âI told you, itâs different in a professional setting,â He argued, his back still facing Bella despite the obvious sound of rustling fabric. He didnât think he could be too safe. âThose women trust me, Iâm there to do my job. I donât just walk in on them undressing - or dressing - whatever it was you were doing.â Whatever it was, walking in on it had made him feel like a creep. As if heâd invaded her privacy. Which technically he had. âIf she called them the big guns then I think that perhaps you shouldnât trust her anyway,â He pointed out, âLack of blushing and stuttering be damned.âÂ
he looked like the definition of not having a good time. squirmy (if that was a word). with a buttoned front, bellaâs arms fell to her sides. âyouâre safe now. two completely clothed people.â she chuckled. this wasnât on the list of goals for today: make a grown man uncomfortable with her body. bella turned around to find her bag and other belongings. she really was a mess. âbig guns was all me. regretfully. iâll take the L there.â not even she could defend it. âi get it, youâre not one of those creepy docs. you donât drive a white van. love to hear it.â she bent over to pick something up from under the bed. âhope your girlfriend gets a better reaction than this. you kinda look like you just saw something unspeakable.â and a smirk followed.
âAnd what job do you have?â She tilted her head at the other women. Curious as to what she did within the hospital. âTrust me. I know itâs crazy but it happens a lot.â Alyiah was just used to it at this point and it didnât phase her much anymore. âI am. Surgical resident but iâm a doctor and we arenât all narcissist.âÂ
ânothinâ exciting.â she gave a shrug. âiâm a new assistant in human resources. phones, emails, photocopies--every little fun thing you could think of.â bella laughed at her own expense. the job was what it was. getting that money. she frowned. âpeople suck.â sheâd hit the door close button before. everyone did that! not when someone was running, though. not a total bitch. her teeth sank into her bottom lip. âyou donât look like a narcissist if it helps. youâve got a much better vibe than that. good energy. i kinda grew up around doctors, so my pov is totally warped.â
The surgery Arizona had just completed had been so long, fifteen hours to remove a mass from the patientâs stomach. The blonde informed the family and then walked to the nearest on-call room. Normally she knocked, but in that moment it slipped her mind. She collapsed on the bed, just to hear the other scream. âI donât care about your body, I care about sleep.â
love a little apathy in the morning. âeasy for you to say. your shirt isnât in your hands. please, be my guest.â she didnât have to add the sarcasm, but câmon. it was understandable. what closed door did people not knock at? a little tap. something! she stuffed her arm into one sleeve, then another. âbefore you pass out on me--think my phoneâs still over ther.â she pointed to the bed.Â
head in a chart ,  she is not paying attention to her surroundings . itâs a miracle she actually made it into an on-call room and not some poor, sleeping patientâs room. coming inside, libby doesnât notice the other female until her voice crowds the small room.  â oh my god! â she looks away. â iâm sorry! â she exclaims. teeth sink into her bottom lip and she rubs a thumb over her forehead. â usually these rooms get lockedâ- you know what, my bad. totally on me. i â yeah , shouldâve knocked. â
no one could say bella wasnât making an impression. new employee, plenty of stories to tell. âknow what? itâs fine.â she gestured with her hand and slipped it into the sleeve of the shirt. âleast iâve been working out lately.â couldnât deny she looked good. âit was locked at one point. i like a little risk, but not that much.â her fingers started on the buttons. âyou can come in, iâll be outta your hair soon as i look like i could work in an office and didnât just get dressed in one of these rooms.âÂ
Nathan nodded his head, feeling more and more awkward by the second as he kept his gaze away from the woman as she covered herself up. âI was meant to be trying to get some sleep not running into - into this.â He explained, his hand waving in her direction slightly as he spoke. âThese rooms have sleeping doctors in, doors closed is kinda the whole point - do you, have you worked in a hospital long? Are you even meant to be in here?â He asked, putting the pieces together in his mind that he hadnât actually seen her around before.
ânot the worst thing a guyâs ever called me.â couldâve been worse. bella followed it with a quick shrug. âthis does have a name. usually go by bella, maybe bells. this doesnât have the same ring.â her lips formed into a smirk, working the buttons on the top. she wasnât convinced doctors only slept in these rooms. âmmm, is 24 hours long? iâm already learning so much. you a doctor in this place?â bellaâs hands finished with the buttons on her shirt. âcovered. you can stop freaking. unless you have an aversion to exposed ankles. guys are so predictable.â she chuckled. âguess to your point, i couldâve snuck into a hospital. always wanted to spend the night on vinyl mattress. everything i dreamed of.â

âit is fun.â that was the best description rebecca could deliver from everyoneâs favourite gay bar. she couldnât help but laugh. âa few things come to mind, considering you remembered her great dance moves.â she wasnât fooling anyone. âdo you work here? i donât remember seeing you around.â and rebecca was very good with faces.
âmmkay, i can work with fun.â not as good as wild, but a vibe she could work with. âif i went to check it out, would i see you there?â there was no harm in bella asking. simple question. nothing more. bella laughed. âmaybe they were really great moves. dance moves!â good save. âis there dancing at the wildrose?â she hated a stale bar. bella needed entertainment. âi like to think i leave an impression, but thatâs âcause you havenât.â her lips curled into a smile. âiâm working in human resources. very new here. iâm bella. and you...?âÂ
âIf you were carrying on the family name youâd be downstairs in general.â Lilith murmured making the decision not to make a comment about the fact that Celeste and Bella had different surnames. She paused slightly at Bellaâs statement. âNo I didnât, she didnât even know you were in town. But you did. Why would you bring it up?â
even correcting her in a farce. so annoying. bellaâs eyes rolled. âi didnât want her to know. not âtil I was ready.â or came up with an excuse. whichever was first. ââcause i assumed she was coming to yell at me for it. what happened? you didnât want the brownie points from ratting on me?â bella stepped in it anyway, but she wanted to know why.Â
