aqua-antonio:
Antonioâs eyes widened as Cendric neared the end of his story. Almost immediately, guilt washed over him as he suddenly felt like a jackass for having probed in the first place.
âOh my god, Iâm so sorry,â he said, the astonishment clearly still in his eyes. He was trying his best so subdue his reaction, but between the shock he felt after finally noticing the ear piece and the humiliation he felt from having asked such a personal question⌠he was beyond mortified.
Sensing his trainerâs distress, Mudkip raced back over to Antonio, scampering up the side of his body and resting on his shoulder. Instinctively, the water-type began to nuzzle at Antonioâs cheeks, half-successfully cheering him up in the process.Â
He canât help the chuckle that escapes as Antonio suddenly looks very horrified, prompting his Mudkip to return and scamper upwards in an attempt to console him. Vivonne, confused by the sudden disappearance of her playmate, also returns to sit by Cenricâs feet, peering up at the other man and his Pokemon with large curious eyes.Â
âDonât worry about it,â he said with a wave of his hand, trying to reassure him despite still looking somewhat amused. Unless it was necessary, or someone asked questions, his troubles with hearing were rarely brought up in conversation so Antonio was absolutely not the first to make such a blunder.
His response was definitely the most entertaining, however.Â
Glancing back at the Mudkip, Cenric couldnât help but find itâs actions to be rather cute. Changing the subject, he gave a small nod towards the water-type that nuzzled against itâs trainers cheeks.
âYou two must be really close for him to come running like that?â

forestgreenbpd:
The read he got from a guy like Cenric was funny â cute, even. He was kinda shy and kinda socially awkward despite being a guy pushing past his thirties. He was a little cute, honestly, though Green wasnât sure that he should be ogling the guy like that. Heâd probably have a heart attack if Green tried anything further, even if he himself wasnât looking.
Well, heart attacks were half the fun of it, wasnât it? He gave a devilish little grin. âAlright, well, Teach says the best place to start is with a little lunch, donât you think? Quick stop to a Pokemon Center, grab something nice to eat. Itâs the least I can do after randomly showing up in the wee hours of the day just asking a guy to fight him. Some nice foodâd do us some good, yâknow?âÂ
He grinned, beginning to move to a Pokemon Center he knew was nearby. After all, this was Kanto; he knew the place like the back of his hand by now. âWalk with me, right? What signs do you got for me, cute stuff? Do you at least know the alphabet? Thatâd probably be a good place to start, if not.â He walked next to him with a little wink at âcute stuff.â Câmon now; he wasnât gonna get anywhere with this guy if he didnât have a little fun every now and then.
  âLunch?â
Cenric raised a brow, a little surprised at the suggestion. Heâd mostly been expecting Green to teach him a few extra signs right here where they stood, but he wasnât exactly opposed to grabbing something to eat. It had been a long day, and after such a battle their teams deserved the time to rest up at a Pokemon Center. After a moments consideration, he nodded with a small smile of his own.
  âSure thing.â
With that, he started to walk alongside the other, listening closely as he glanced around to asses their surroundings. There didnât seem to be any other potential challengers about to interrupt their stroll with a battle request, which was a relief, but even if there was he doubted theyâd even bother after recognizing who it was Cenric was walking with.Â
âI know the alphabet. Simple things like yes, no, thank you. Beyond that, Iâm not really--â
Wait. âCute stuffâ? Brows furrowing slightly, Cenric tried to look like he wasnât bothered as he gave Green a sideways glance, but he was betrayed by the dusting of pink across his cheeks. Compliments, even in a casual jokey way, were something heâd never been able to handle.
âIâll assume I heard you wrong right now, but cute isnât the word Iâd go with.âÂ
the dichotomy between friends || Harley & Cenric
coolteachxr:
Harley continues to go through the soothing routine of brushing Royâs fur. Itâs always nice to run his fingers through the soft coat. The action had been a comforting gesture back then, when things got rough and he feels a little overwhelmed by it all. At the time, Roy had been a Herdier, but he still tries his best to shield the scrawny teen from the world. When he evolved, it just gave him even more softness to rest his body against.
Cenric raises his brows, giving Harley a certain look. As much as he claims he doesn't drink them regularly, the veteran clearly isn't too convinced â especially with that scoff from Roy. Not that he can really blame the guy. Aside from the year spent as a humble cashier at his home city's Pokemart, Cenric has never actually held down a 'proper' job before, and if he's honest, if he was handling both a classroom full of kids and a mountain of paperwork at the same time, he'd be chugging the energy drinks like there was no tomorrow too. Â
aqua-antonio:
âOh?â Antonio furrowed a brow at Cendricâs interesting - though vague - response. It probably would have been better for him not to pry, but the longer the two of them spoke, the more curious Antonio grew. He couldnât shake the feeling that this guy did a lot of traveling, something that Antonioâs dreamed of doing for a while now, and the fact that his adventure led him into trouble only made Cendric seem that much more interesting.Â
âWhat kind of trouble?â he asked, a mischievous, though eager look in his eyes.
âShould I be concerned with how enthusiastic you look at the idea of trouble?â He commented, followed by a quiet huff of laughter. Cenric couldnât exactly relate. Heâd always preferred to stay out of it when possible, and had been pretty successful at it... for the most part.
âI donât think itâs the fun kind youâre looking for, though.â
It wasnât a big deal to him -- at least not anymore -- but he definitely wasnât used to relaying the story to people he hadnât long met. Pausing for a moment to consider the easiest way to explain, Cenric eventually let his shoulders droop in defeat, deciding to just be blunt about it.
âIt was around ten years ago. I caught a Whismur here, trained him up. Wasnât smart enough to look into the different Pokemon, and Explouds are really... well--â Silently finishing his sentence, the Kantonian raised a hand to point at one ear, showing the mostly discreet earpiece he wore.Â
âWeâre here making up for lost time, but I think he still kind of feels bad about it. Poor guy.âÂ

the dichotomy between friends || Harley & Cenric
coolteachxr:
As he gives Roy a little TLC, Harley cast glances at Curtana. He never had the opportunity to see a Dragonite up close and personal like this. The few times that he did were in Gym Battles at the Aspertia City Gym. Occasionally, Cheren would get Trainers who chose this Gym as their last, so that meant strong, typically fully evolved Pokemon. Curtana definitely had the same strength and air that those Dragonites had, further showcasing Cenricâs skill.
Still not liking the naps but he canât deny heâs a damn good battler.
Curtana watches her trainer carefully, not entirely convinced that this is the best of ideas. Still, she only shuffles to the other side of Cenric as he cracks open the energy drink can, joining the audience of Harley and his Stoutland as the veteran taste tests a small sip. The strong, indescribable scent that came from the drink was off-putting enough, so his expression was already unenthused to begin with. Afterwards, he just looked like he'd bitten into a lemon. Â
aqua-antonio:
Antonio looked to Cenricâs hand for just a moment, suddenly aware of the connection these two were making. Since starting up with Team Aqua, his social life had taken a hit⌠not that he was ever much of a social butterfree in the first place, but he certainly had to maintain a lower profile in order to avoid drawing a whole lot of attention to himself. In fact, he couldnât even recall the last time made a new friend. How long ago was that? âŚYears?
âIâm Antonio,â he said, clasping hands with Cendric and returning the gesture with a nice, firm grip. âItâs nice to meet you, too.â
Mudkip stopped mid-chase to watch his trainer shake hands with the nice man. No one knew Antonio better than Mudkip did, and it was already so rare to see him holding a conversation for this long. And wait- was Antonio actually smiling? At another human?Â
âKanto, huh? God, thatâs far. What are you doing all the way out here?â
For a split-second, Cenric grew a little anxious about the hand heâd offered towards the other in greeting. The guy looked almost hesitant at the friendly action making him wonder if he was stepping over some kind of boundary here, but luckily that wasnât the case. Antonio took his hand and returned the shake, earning a somewhat brighter smile from Cenric himself.Â
âI actually came to Hoenn years ago, to continue training, maybe see a little more of the world.â He explained, tipping his head to one side in thought as he tried to figure out how to condense his story. Antonio seemed like a nice guy, but he still probably didnât want to hear him ramble too much.Â
âGot into some trouble, so I had to go home sooner than Iâd have liked. But, here I am again. There are too many sights Iâd like to see to give up completely.â
the worst teacher | green & cenric
forestgreenbpd:
Green nodded at Cenricâs confession. Wasnât weird at all, heâd think; after all, Green only happened to learn as much as he did because he was a wildly determined little bitch and didnât wanna have to rely on Google Translate everywhere he went, and considering he learned pretty much three languages growing up, language acquisition was quite easy for him.
It must not be all that easy to have to suddenly shift your focus from a language youâve learned your entire life to something youâre not used to, especially out of necessity.
By the look on the veteran's face, Cenric was clearly still unsure about Green's offer. He was still somewhat doubtful that he'd even be able to pick it up that quickly at all â the few extremely basic signs he knew here and there were already a struggle, but his motivation up until this point had been particularly lacking. Not to mention, he didn't want to be any kind of burden. A Gym Leader was probably busy enough without acting as a language tutor on the side...
aqua-antonio:
âOh,â he said flatly, already having forgot the foreign Pokemonâs name. Antonio knew what an Eevee was; they were incredibly popular, he knew that much. However, Eeveeâs werenât native to Hoenn and so, while he might have battled against a few of them or perhaps one of itâs evolutions, he didnât know them well enough to recognize them so quickly. Perhaps this was the universe telling him that he should try to leave Hoenn for a little bit⌠of course, though, with what money?
âWell I definitely know what a Charmander is⌠and a Charizard, of course. Theyâre not too common around here, but I have had to battle them maybe once or twice.â
ââŚwhere did you say you were from?â
Cenric looked a little entertained by the otherâs rather flat response, the corner of his lips quirking upwards in amusement as he held back a quiet laugh. Heâd seen enough of Hoenn to know that most of his team werenât often used by trainers over here, so that moment of confusion was understandable.
Having to battle something like a Charizard with such a little Mudkip -- assuming that was the only Pokemon this guy had -- sounded way too rough, though. Poor little guy. Still, he brushed it off for the time being in favour of giving a proper introduction, which was probably long overdue considering how comfortably chatty theyâd gotten at this point.Â
âKanto. Viridian City, to be exact.â Pushing himself up from where he was sat, he dusted his hands off before offering one towards the other. âCenric Callaway. Nice to meet you.â

Harley gives another stretch to work out the muscles before turning back to Cenric. He raises an eyebrow at the comment. âWell, yeah. Like, thereâs a certain level of balance you have to strike with kids. Canât be too strict, for you want them to enjoy the class and not be there because you have to, but you canât be too lenient either for you donât want them to disrespect you,â he replies almost seriously, then snorts. âYouâre a grown ass adult. I think you can handle a little strictness.â Then he grins, looking Untrustworthy. âUnless you want me to give you gold stickers and say, good job Cenric whilst giving you a piece of candy that you shouldnât tell the others about.â
Still, he gives his battling companion a hearty pat on the back, the grin looking more genuine. âBut yeah, I think we can easily make it to the twentieth one.â

"I don't care how old I am, I wouldn't say no to a piece of candy." He retorted in a deadpan tone, after giving it a moments consideration. If there was one thing Harley would learn about him quickly, it was to never underestimate the power of his sweet tooth. Â

the dichotomy between friends || Harley & Cenric
coolteachxr:
Cenric returns his gaze with a slightly suspicious one of his own. Harley scoffs at his comment, barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes. Wanting to continue while they still had momentum is an unhealthy work ethic? The hospital comment had him snorting. âPlease, overexertion is legitimately the last thing youâd need to drag me to the hospital for. I find myself in the ER every other month that Iâm on a first name basis with some off the nurses on duty there.â
Speaking of, he wondered how Brenda and Peter are doing right now. Probably betting on the next time he finds himself wheeled in there. He wants in on that pool.
For a moment Cenric looks legitimately concerned. For all the back and forth there had been over text message, checking in on each other here and there, the veteran still had no grasp on how... unfortunate Harley could be. Slowly chewing on the snack that had been handed to him, he frowns softly, looking like a worried parent. Â
 "That's no good." Â
Should he be assigning some sort of babysitter-bodyguard combo before he leaves again? Â
aqua-antonio:
âOh?â It was so obvious that this stranger was from a foreign region and perhaps that was reason enough for Antonio to be so curious as to who this person was.
âWas that your starter?â he said, motioning over to Vivonne. It wasnât until the words came out of his mouth, however, that it suddenly dawned on him that he had no idea what Pokemon that was. Heâd never seen one of them before. At least, not natively in Hoenn.Â
Vivonne... his starter? Cenric shook his head. Eevee was a popular Pokemon among a lot of people, fluffy and cute with a lot of potential, but it wasnât one of the traditional three that kids from Kanto got to choose between.Â
âSheâs a Vaporeon. The water-type evolution of Eevee. My starter was a Charmander, but sheâs fully evolved now as well.â
Idly, he wondered if this guy was familiar with Pokemon from Kanto at all. Thinking back, Cenric himself been just as baffled by the ones found in Hoenn when heâd first visited, so he could somewhat relate to his confusion.
âIâd introduce you, but sheâs a lot more feisty than Vivonne, here.â
the worst teacher | green & cenric
forestgreenbpd:
He snapped his fingers at Cenricâs words. âThere ya go. Exactly my sentiments. After me? You gotta go through Victory Road, my dude. You gotta go through the ringer. I never wanted to be that easy for that exact reason. Yeah, maybe holding back on Jari-chan Mega Evolving and everything â I pull out that party trick only for folks like you â but câmon now. Iâm gonna give you everything Iâve got. But yâknow what? I actually hear that the kids that make it through once I give them shit and a half learn a few things â things that help make their journey from that point on easier. And thatâs what itâs all about, huh?â He gave a smirk.
He almost wished he had something more idle to do â a Pokemon to tend to like Cenric did â but then again, all of his were fainted, so he could only just play with his necklace where his keystone lay, twiddling the little leather straps between his fingertips.
Cenric raised a brow with a hint of a smile at the mention of mega-evolving. It had definitely upped the ante, especially considering his own (and only) Pokemon with the capability to do the same had an unfortunate typing matchup. But still, even without using his keystone Cenric was certain that Green's team had scared some poor kid half to death at some point. He'd never actually journeyed across Victory Road himself so he couldn't be sure, but the wild Pokemon there probably paled in comparison to the Gym Leader's team. Â
"I think any route would seem like a cakewalk after a battle like that," he offered, only half joking. Â
aqua-antonio:
For some reason, Antonio was taken aback by the question. Noticeably floored, he paused for a second before returning his attention back to Cendric. No, Antonio didnât consider himself a trainer. Leaving his family was never fiscally available to him as an option, and so, seeing as how he didnât embark on a journey at the pre-mature age of ten likes so many of his peers, this was the only life he knew.Â
âNo, I definitely wouldnât consider myself a trainer. Well, not a serious one, at least.â Sheepishly, he looked to Mudkip, who was playing around with Vaporeonâs tail at this point. âItâs something Iâd like to try a little more of, but getting Mudkip to train is a mission in itself. Once a week is about as much as his attention span can handle⌠but itâs okay. Itâs more of a hobby, anyway.â
With that reaction, Cenric felt a little guilty for outright voicing his observations, but he really couldnât help but wonder. As far as he was aware, the rare starter Pokemon given to kids about to start their journey were given out on those terms alone -- unless this particular Mudkip was bred for him specially. After a moment of thought, the Kantonian shrugged it off. Maybe things were just different around here than back home.Â
âNothing wrong with that,â he commented, watching over the pair of Pokemon as they played. Fortunately, Vivonne was definitely the most gentle of his team, and had no problems with goofing off with a stranger Pokemon if it meant making a friend.Â
âBut my own starter was even more bold and adventurous than I was, so I canât say I relate.â
bxdgame:Â Â
Charon choked back another giggle at his failed attempt of helping her and his lackluster cover at just clearing his throat; it was embarrassing on his part, but it was cutely charming in a way. Though the charm lost its spark when his Dragonite growled at them to hurry along probably speaking up on its trainerâs behalf.
But despite the fact she was going to be walking along with a pokemon that looked it was just about seconds from blowing up the entire place with a hyper beam, the manâs voice was enough reassurance that nothing was going to happen with them around. âIâll take your word on that, well, itâs not like Iâm gonna abandon you if we end up battling a local or two.â
Ideally she was hoping to go without any needless small talk, she hoped he didnât think the snack sharing was an ice breaker, it was just obligatory since his pokemon was gonna blow a gasket at any second. It wasnât as though they would ever meet again anyways, quite honestly sheâd be ok with him referring to her as just âyouâ the entire time.
âAh, Iâm Charon. Iâm not really big on nicknames, but the little brat in the basket is Darumaka.â She noted the clear fatigue in his voice and started walking on ahead, wheeling the bike along her side.
âAlso, you donât need to worry about formalities; actually it makes me a little uncomfortable if youâre gonna be a stiff stick the entire time.â
Curtana was always the hotheaded type, so Cenric wasnât taking her grumbling too seriously. Dragons were always difficult by nature, and after so many years of dealing with her the Kantonian was adept at telling when she was legitimately angry, or just being sulky. Right now she was just acting as petulant as she had been when heâd first discovered her as a young Dratini; stubbornly squaring up to passing trainers despite having the intimidation factor of a wet noodle.
  â... Please donât.â
This woman -- Charon, as she introduced herself -- was practically his only hope. And unfortunately for her, Cenric was the kind of person who felt the need to squash âawkwardâ silence with more small talk, despite not being a fan of it himself. He wasnât big on idle conversation, but the thought of walking the entire route without a word was even more harrowing, wasnât it?
Ah, no formalities, right. The Kantonian was ready to mutter another apology, but managed to bite his tongue before any escaped. Instead he hesitated, eyes glancing around their surroundings from tree to tree as they walked before he finally came upon a topic to ramble about.
âYou must be local, right? Whatâs it like around here?â

forestgreenbpd:
Green rested a finger on his chin, nodding at the thought. âYeah, more or less, I was the same way. Started out my wee journey at ten and I never looked back. And you never stop learning after that point. Though, yeah, far as advice goes, you might not wanna tell that to the little kids. Wonât give them a direction to turn to.âÂ
He snorted. âHonestly, I think that was the weirdest part of becoming a Gym Leader. Wasnât even about putting your grit and strategy out there, but⌠learning how to deal with the crowd â cuz theyâre usually kids. They need advice and all that shit, and some of them start crying and just. Ugh. Iâve had to learn to deal with that. But hey, I gotta thank you for that. A lot of peopleâve told me I gotta cut back on⌠how hard I go when I battle against these kids â that it isnât fair. But yâknow what? If the League was a cakewalk, how could kids learn, yâknow? Feels like you earn this badge when I give it to ya.â And with that, and a wink, he pressed the little badge into Cenricâs palm.
It was right around when the other was tending to his Exploud that he noticed it â or what he assumed to be a hearing aid anyway. Definitely didnât look like a Bluetooth. And shit, fuck. Welp. He felt bad. How much was he just gabbing on and Cenric couldnât make it out? Would sign language be easier? Should he bring it up or would that be rude? He decided it was best not to assume things before he even knew the guy. âYâknow, forgive me for being a bug, but⌠we donât really see many Exploud or the Whismur line around here in Kanto, but then again, I remember hearing tell you went off to Hoenn for a bit, right? The guy seems to really love you.â Well. He hoped that was a neutral enough place to start. Hopefully it wouldnât be too invasive. Hopefully.
Cenric looks a little more bashful when offering advice to kids is brought up, a soft laugh escaping as he lowers his gaze to the ground, though he manages a small nod of agreement. Green was right, it was best to come across as more inspiring to younger kids who wanted to learn, but it was certainly difficult to give a solid answer on to how to be a successful trainer.Â
âSounds like being a Gym Leader is harder work than anyone really expects,â he started, mulling it over.Â

Cenric seemingly scoffs at his threat, causing his eyes to gleam. Oh, if thatâs how he wants to playâ but then he gets up, looking less than pleased about having his nap disturbed. Harley would have 100% follow through with his threat about lip locking in combat if it means getting Cenric back to combat. Their end goal is to reach the Subway Bosses, and they wonât be able to get there if pretty boy here decides to claim a row of seats as his unofficial napping spot.

For a few seconds Cenric just sits there, eyeing Harley suspiciously. The guy had gotten seriously invested in the battles that had passed â rightfully so, considering each win under their belt meant being one step closer to the bosses â and apparently, he wasn't taking too kindly to the idea of any lengthy breaks. Look at that little frown. His threats were clearly no joke. Â
