SHORT STORY/ONE-SHOT/ONE CHAPTER/COMICS 101 CRASH COURSE RAPIDPUNCHES’ STYLE
I’m NOT an expert but I have some working experience I can share. You need experience to become great. Here is my set of instructions, tips, and notes towards making a 12-page comic.
My method is to work backwards. Personally I work “backwards” because the end is the only wholly necessary page or set of panels in the story. Everything in between is open to editing and hacking as the most important moments are emphasized and chosen.
I even plan/draw the end page first. The end is the last page a reader sees- so spend your freshest energies on making it as epic, memorable, poignant, and beautiful as #$%^&.
If you draw the pages from 1 to 12 sequentially you run the risk of fresh to burnt out- an uneven distribution of drawing skill. (treat the first page and the 2-page splash as you would the last).
Roughly… the steps to making your comic is
WRITE
PLAN THUMBNAILS
DRAW
…BEGIN THE WRITING (DO NOT SKIP NO MATTER WHAT) like this, in this order:
How does it end?
Does the protag succeed or fail?
What is the turning point of their story?
What the protag do that led them there?
Where does it start?
Who is this protag?
EXAMPLE:
Guy gets mauled by a bear.
This is a fail on the guy’s half.
The bear must eat something or he’ll starve to death.
It’s the guy’s fault the bear can’t find other food. He caused the avalanche that buried all the cabins.
The guy is yodeling in an avalanche zone.
The guy is some guy.
CREATING “THE BEAT SHEET” Take the above stuff and reorder it to make sense.
This guy yodels.
Echoes roll.
Snow slides down.
Avalanche buries the mountain.
Cabins are engulfed.
This bear has no access to cabin food and garbage.
Bear eats this guy.
Expand. Blow up important beats for emphasis. Keep less important beats brief.
This guy is hiking in the snowy mountains.
He comes across an avalanche warning sign.
There is nobody around but him.
A dumb expression forms over his face and he yodels.
Echoes roll but nothing nearby is moved.
At the top of the mountain the snow drifts twitch.
Guy, satisfied, hikes away from there still yodeling.
Frozen snow cracks.
Snow puffs billow and great slabs of ice crash down the mountain side.
Guy sees this and hightails it to safer ground.
Animals, people, are all panicking and getting pushed over by the rushing snow.
Cabins are destroyed.
The guy takes cover by an outcropping of rocks, fastens himself securely to the rock face, and waits for the avalanche to die down.
Avalanche dies down.
A lone bear shambles over from the other side of the mountain.
The bear goes to where a cabin used to be (only roof tiles are left). Bear sniffs a dish satellite.
Bear forlornly eats a food wrapper.
Bear tries to dig.
Guy comes down from the rocks he as climbing and sees bear.
Bear stops digging and sees him.
Guy runs.
Bear chases him down.
Bear eats the guy.
BEAT SHEET COMPLETED!!!
After the beat sheet, write up all the sound effects and speech bubbles and conversation/dialogue you want to be in your comic.
Since comics are a visual medium, highest priority is given to the beats. If a story can’t be told with the art without the dialogue– you messed up and it’s time to rethink your life choices.
Try to keep all your text chunks as short as a tweet. Professionally you don’t want more than 25 words per speech bubble and no more than 250 words per page.
Next is translating the beats to pages…
STRUCTURE OVERVIEW:
[1] point of entry, in media res, hero intro
[2][3] conflict. establish conflict, setting, and mood by the third page. [4][5] rising action/false resolution to conflict/investigation
[6][7] turning point/plot twist/epiphany (this one epic image, to page spread is pivotal, spend a lot of effort into creating this)
[8][9] aftermath/“darkness before dawn”/struggle [10][11] recovery/“rise and conquer”/“fall”
[12] resolution/final end/cliffhanger
[front cover][interior] [interior][back cover]
——————–
My maximum per page is nine panels but I’ve seen pages that have way more. I like to have about 3 to 4 panels per row or less but I’ve seen the “rules” broken before. Advanced comic book artists manipulate time with the number of panels and the size of each panel.
remember, DIAGONALS!!! open up an issue of batman, superman, spider man, deadpool or whatever youre reading theyre everywhere.
———-
…DRAW IN THIS ORDER:
Page 12,
Page 6 and 7 (this is typically one large image that takes up the space of two pages),
Page 1,
and then the rest.
ONLY “DEVIATION” ALLOWED:
Page 12 and 1*
Page 6 and 7,
and then the rest.
*Draw the first and last page as a spread in situations where the beginning of the story mirrors the end of the story.
Cover is dead last.
———-
(If at the very end you find out you need more pages and it’s absolutely unavoidable and totally necessary you have to add them in fours. Try to stick to 12 pages for this crash course.)
——————–
FURTHER NOTES:
Plan and draw the pages in spreads (the twos) since this is how it will appear in print and when you submit them to an editor for review guess what, the pages with an exception to the first and last will be reviewed as spreads.
You at most only need one establishing panel of the setting and environment (scene) per page.
Forget “true to life” perspective outside of the establishing panel). Practice diagonal composition of objects and subjects within panels. For dynamism.
You don’t have to present the text all in one go (one paragraph or bubble). You can and should break up paragraphs, sentences, and if you need to single out words– to make smaller, more easily managed bubbles to scatter through the panel.
Less important moments have smaller panels and or lesser detail. More details (or more word bubbles) slow down time. More drawn detail also creates a concentration of values (it’s darker and sometimes combines together as one shape or mass)
Know your light sources. Control the blacks. Control the values.

how do i get rid of this bullshit in windows 10 that forces a writing keyboard/on screen keyboard to pop up any time i click on any typing box with my tablet pen instead of my mouse :’) i hate it with a burning passion and i hate windows 10
oh my god i fixed it:
go to services
find touch keyboard/handwriting panel
double click
set to disabled
click apply
then click stop
wait for the green bar to finish filling
then close it
it stopped for me (nothing else had been working)
Found some hands tutorial by me

AYYY another Palette & Expression Meme, look at that. You may have to zoom in for details lol. 81 Expressions and 50 Palettes, go nuts guys. And since I know I will eventually get this question (or I won’t and people will just do it anyway) ASK ME before reposting. I may or may not already have it wherever it is you want it. Yes you may also just use it for practice. I personally will not be taking requests for this one as I’m trying to focus on getting commissions so I can afford a new computer~

HIIRAREFS: Basic and Intermidiate guide to colouring in
What better day to end the year then with a basic guide to colouring- This is for beginners or intermediate artists. Colouring is a big part to an art piece, whether you decide to use colours or not, that’s up to you, but for the most part, having some knowledge on appliance of colour will really help you out!
____________________________________________
ARTISTS WITH AN INSPIRING KNOWLEDGE OF COLOUR APPLICATION! Please take the time to have a look at other artists work so that you ca research and get inspired!
Gullacass: Uses brights, dulls and pastels to create brilliant guro, pop and macabre pieces| DA + TUMBLR
TinyCalcium: Old friend of mine who explores brights and mustard colours and places them as a foundation for their work | TUMBLR
BeastPop: Talented with opposing and Triwheel colours. Outstanding cell-shading, and knows how to flexibly bend colour form to their will in popart. | DA
H0stel: Fantastic composition of light direction and applies colour to bodies based on ambient occlusion. | TUMBLR
_____________________________________________
COLOUR SLANG: I use some strange slang to express colour types and shades as well as groups. Although they may not be canonically correct, I will use these terms to describe colour palates to the best of my ability! Analogous: Colours that are near or adjacent to each other on the colour wheel, EG: Red and Orange
Oppositional/complimentary: Colours that are opposed or opposite from each other on the colour wheel, EG: Cherry and Green
Triadic: Colours that form a triangle on the Colour wheel, EG: Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. These three colours when mixed together will make black.
Arrowtype/Quadcolour: Four colours, that generally form an arrow shape on the colour wheel.
Tetradic: Colours that form a rectangle or square in the colour wheel
Neons: The very brightest you can get a colour, be careful where you use them as they can look ugly together at the most. Try to use neons when you are adding bright glowing objects to your piece. Neons are great for highlights.
Brights: Slightly washed Neons. Appropriate if you have characters that are colourful.
Washed: Very washed brights with a hint of grey. These are also useful for colourful characters.
Pastels: Colour with white in them to make them seem light.
Baby Pastel: Pastel with even more white in them, good for subtle highlights.
Darks: Colour with black added to them. Used mostly for lineart.
Mustards: Colours with dark grey added to them
Earthen: Colours with brown added to them
Warm and Cool colours: Warm colours are colours that range fromMagenta to Yellow. Cool ones range from Lime to Fuchsia.
Straight tones: A greyscale palate. or a straight scale of one colour from black to it’s neon form.
Warm and cool tones: Warm tones are a greyscale mixed with warm colours and cool tones are greyscale mixed with cool colours.
Skintones: Warm washed or pastel colours generally used to colour in skin, but they don’t have to be warm at all! ( I will not show you a palate for this however)
______________________________________________
WHAT TO AVOID WHEN COLOURING: beginner artists, tend to go ahead and start by colouring their line art with neon and mustard colours. Neons are not necessarily good for base colours unless the character has a glow.
I often see lazy attempts to shade, often a beginner artist with use an airbrush and use black and white to shade and highlight their piece. This is not very effective, and I’m sorry to say… It’s kind of gross as well. Try to avoid being lazy. If you have a piece that has bold black lines, avoid using soft shading and airbrushing at this point of time.
Black and white isn’t always the best option when colouring in your piece, but it also depends on the style you are trying to convey. If you plan on only using straight tones to colour in a piece, black and white is good.
A GOOD BASIC WAY TO COLOUR For this basic tutorial I will show you a nice way to colour in a piece with bold lines. I will be using Minty’s Classic character as an example.
Begin with using brights that have been washed down a little and washed skin tones if your character is human based. Avoid using neons or mustards if you are able. If there is white on the character, such as the white on an eyeball or the teeth, consider using baby pastels. For Minty’s eyeballs I have used a baby pastel blue. I have chosen to use a darker and more washed version for her Irises.
With you foundation colours placed down, use a washed warm colour for the skin tone, such as a salmon. If the character’s hair or fur is warm coloured, use a pink or red orange to shade that as well. Use the cell shading technique. This may mean you will have to erase some of your shading so be sure to do this on another layer. For your baby pastels, you can use a regular pastel to shade it. For Minty’s eyes I have used pastel blue and lowered the opacity by a little.
For Highlights, I have chosen to use baby pastel yellow. I wanted the piece to be warm.
Applying a light airbrush over the top of the piece makes it feel a little softer. I have also applied the airbrush over the initial borders to create colour bleed, giving a very subtle reflective approach.
Colouring your line art layer, particularly if you have bold lines, can really make a piece look more interesting! I like to leave the overall outline black. You can gradient and bleed colour in your line art as well
Light tracing is a technique lots of artist’s use, where they run a sharp line of highlight next to line art to divide borders.
This looks a lot nicer than the black and white shading, doesn’t it!? __________________________________________
This is a very very simple guide to applying colour to your piece! If This helped, please reblog and share this guide around!

Hey yea I love you and can you do me a favor and just do like a really quick thing on how to draw like satyr legs. I want to draw my boy but I can’t draw he leggies. You ain’t gotta but I would love you even more. Thank you sm 🖤💜💙💚💛❤️💟💓💗💖💔❣️💕💘💞💝🎀
Tutorial time!
BEFORE ANYTHING: This is how I personally do this. Other artists will have other ways, other styles and other references, so expand your horizon looking up to them too!
BEFORE ANYTHING²: I’ll have to trust you with the basic anatomy understanding!
So LETS GO
Those are human legs doing things human legs do, and that’s on the last one is a suggestion of the bones, aint anatomically correct but i just need y’all to visualize it.
Then:
This is anthropomorphic leggy! Also with bones suggestions! did you see the catch? no? (I used deer legs as references!)
See now? With luck we’re mammals so we sorta have the same bones in different ways, and use it as advantage!
In fantastic anatomy, there’s not much rules because, well, it’s not real so there’s no book teaching you how to properly draw those. like centaurs, they have two toraxic boxes! 4 LUNGS??? 2 STOMACHES? Doesn’t matter, does it? it’s belivable, and it’s what matter!
I repeat: It’s only belivable, and it’s what matter!
Also the muscles will work sorta on the same way (see the blobs). On the satyr ones, the purples are smaller, just as the brigh blue one, since this part is smaller than the thighs and feet, meanwhile it’s usually longer on humans!
It’s more about understanding the shape then drawing the leg over it, because this makes you understand how it was supposed to move even you don’t have a real anatomy satyr leg in front of you, or dunno, octapus merman, go wild my buddy!
This is how i usually doodle them before even getting the anatomy right, usually i just need the idea of the leg before actually starting
and most important:
GET. YO. FRIGGING. REFERENCES.
yES YOU HEARD ME RIGHT. References always. Disney has a lot of stuff free for you to look at, and fantasy is a common theme, there’s thousands of other tutorials and artists that also do this, and it’s good to make sure you saw at least 3 or 4 more, never hurts learning more about what you want to make A++!
With reference, you’re not tied only to deer legs, but dogs, elephants, crocodiles, birds, snakes?, anything! It’s really important!
GOOD LUCK!

Hello loveys, a lot of ppl asked for Zarya cosplay tutorial so here it is! As seen on VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72usSTAKZy0
Hey so uh,
As a trans guy who’s been working out for a few years now and has learned a lot about their body and building muscle and whatnot in the process, here’s something I don’t see mentioned, like ever.
Abs don’t really look Like That™ when they’re relaxed.
Here’s a few examples from a Reddit thread asking for pictures of people both flexing and not flexing their abs
I rarely see male body positivity posts in general but I’ve never seen this mentioned, and honestly? Call me stupid for it if you want, but I genuinely thought that super defined look was something that was achievable in a relaxed state, simply because I’ve never seen anything to the contrary.
As someone with body dysmorphia as well as dysphoria, you can imagine the damaging effects that might have had on my mental health trying by to achieve the impossible. I can only imagine how many other masculine folk out there could be struggling with the exact same thing.
Anyway like, this is mostly to point out for masculine folks that might be pushing themselves too hard, that you’re probably doing better than you realise.
Anecdotal stuff aside, this is an important thing for artists to remember as well! This is something I never realised despite being an artist that goes to figure drawing classes on the regular and having modelled for them myself- because of course people with abs are flexing for the poses! I was doing it too! - Admin Pasta
