Some of the items from Dragon Quest IV!

Torneko is the man
I found this on Mandarake in Japan and Iām super happy about it! Itās a Dragon Quest IV card game from 1990 called Silver Tarot (éć®ćæććć) based off Minea/Nara/Meenaās tarot in the game. I am very excited to learn the rules and try it out with my friends! The art is fantastic, and it was in amazing condition for being so old. :) Thanks Japan!

Some of the characters from Dragon Quest IV!

Hereās one of the official Dragon Quest IV official guide books from 1990. Itās full of a lot of lovely art I had never seen before for the most minor of characters and items. Here are some of my favorite highlights.
First, we have my favorite page in the book, because Alena looks sweet in her toga-dress, Maya looks wonderful in her 80s workout outfit, and Borya is just hilarious. Next, itās cool to see Ragnar in other armors befitting a royal knight.
Iām amazed that pretty much every single character of minor importance gets a little blurb. Cynthia on the right there makes sense, but I have no clue who Jill is to the left of her. I can read their Japanese names, but Iām more familiar with minor charactersā English names.
I donāt remember an important dog. I canāt believe he warrants a place here haha. The next page has some old men who, despite having the same sprites, have different art, which I appreciate.
I adore Luciaās art. Sheās adorable. The last thing of note is just how amusing some of the transliterations are. āRollinsā is clearly supposed to be Laurence, but due to the limitations of Japanese when writing foreign names, Rollins is technically correct too. Other fun names include Lyon instead of Ryan (Ragnar) and Arena instead of Alena.
Itās probably the dog forms Tornekoās town who scares off the tricky foxes.

Torneko: The Last Hope was out today in 1999. A roguelike featuring Torneko, the merchant from Dragon Quest IV.
In my opinion, DragonĀ Quest IV (Dragon Warrior IV)Ā was easily the bestĀ JRPG on the NES, and the first āmodernā JRPG in a sense. DragonĀ Quest III and Final Fantasy both got the formula down right, but what made DQ4 so wonderful was the story. I love Dragon Warrior II with all my heart, but itās rather simple as far as plots go. DQ3 and the three NES Final Fantasies had interesting enough stories for the time, but DQ4ās chapter system blew them all out of the water.
Four short stories, each with their own protagonist, that combine their plots to form an amazing fifth chapter was a unique idea. Many games even to this day have a problem with party members feeling like satellite characters. Christo/Kiryl and Brey/Borya are this to Alena to an extent, but the majority of characters felt like real people from all walks of life. Rather than a random fighter, we got to see royal guard Ragnar protecting his homeland, and experience for ourselves why heās motivated to find the hero. You got to play as a store clerk, for crying out loud. The plot was also much more interesting than collecting four magic items. The plot actually moved along, with a villain who actively set his evil plans in motion, rather than sitting on his throne for the whole game. While not perfect, it was truly ahead of its time.
