Another cause this is so fun In the Waterloo scene, as Therese grabs Carol’s hand and then she unties her robe, what do you think their internal monologues where in those moments? I can imagine Therese holding Carol’s hand because she feels so close and then being like “oh shit, is this happening?” Carol is thinking something along the lines of its now or never. But Im not a good writer so please, do me justice with your description!
Sorry it took me so long to reply but it wasn’t an easy question to answer, though I absolutely loved it!!!!
I think it’s really interesting to imagine what they were feeling in that particular moment, for the reason that they come with a different background which allows them to have a different perspective on the exact same experience. Carol has already done this, while for Therese it’s her very first time, which I think is something that plays a big role in the way that this affects them.
The moment Carol unties her robe it’s such a fundamental point, because it represents the peak of what they both had sought pretty much from the very beginning, not the physical act itself, but the most intimate connection between them. I believe Carol was the most nervous about it, for her action - as bold as it might seem - came with a knowledge of the consequences.
I think she was scared, and I think that what was mainly going through her mind was the ultimate need to protect Therese. I’ve thought this when I really payed attention to the way she initiated that moment; she literally takes full responsibility for what she’s doing by untying her own robe. She doesn’t start engaging with Therese, she doesn’t start by kissing her or undressing her, instead she leaves Therese a choice. The exposure of her own body is her way of shielding Therese, and I think it’s one of the most powerful, intense and selfless things she could have ever done. It’s like she’s offering herself, she’s baring her own body for Therese to take her, accept her, she’s completely leaving out the possibility of Therese regretting anything.
Therese on the other hand, has no previous experience she could compare that moment with. All the possibilities are stretched out for her, and she doesn’t know what to expect, so all she’s left with are the strong feelings she has for Carol. She knows she loves her and she wants to be with her in every way possible and that’s all she’s thinking about, because at the end of the day, she’s the one who got it all started when she accepted Carol’s offer, when she asked Carol to take her to bed. I imagine she’s thinking about Carol’s perfume, how soft her skin would feel under her hands, she’s thinking about finally touching her lips, being with the person she loves; there is no after for Therese, she’s utterly living the moment.
It’s probably not what you asked for, but for the internal monologues I guess I could write a whole story aside 🙈
