âno, absolutely not. if i let you go, everyone else will think they can go as well. thatâs out of the question. you will wait until thereâs another officer and deal with it like everyone else.âÂ
It was obvious this woman was not going to budge. âFine, ok, Iâll find another way.â He would search around until he found another way through.
Valentina pinches her nose and closes her eyes, milling over her answer for a scant few moments. Â Better that she disseminate information rather than someone completely panicked. Â Or worse, a conspiracy theorist.
âYes, this is most certainly a novel pathogen. Â One hallmark of a new disease is a very high morbidity; for example MERS COV has a fatality rate as high as 60%. Â When a new virus emerges, it runs rampant, because we have no antibodies for them without prior exposure first. This virus afflicting us now has what appears to be a 98% mortality at the moment. Though evolutionarily questionable, these odds are not insurmountable.â Â She says cooly. Â âWith proper identification, research, and genetic analysis we can frame the best course of response and containment.â Â
A thoughtful pause.
âAnd with that said, it is imperative that everyone do what they can to limit their exposure to the contagion.  Effective infection control falls on everyoneâs shoulders. Keep away from the restricted zones.  Do not interfere with medical personnel.  Let us do our jobs.â
He nodded like he understood completely what the good doctor was talking about. Though he had didnât completely follow all that Dr. Venturi was talking about, there was one key phrase that scared the perpetual public smile off his face. 98% mortality. Shit.Â
âIâll make sure to highlight the safety of infection control and respecting restricted zones in my broadcast,â he promised, still sombre and distracted as he tried to come up with more questions for the expert. âAh, so what are some symptoms or warning signs that citizen should look for in terms of the disease? When should they seek medical attention and come to the emergency department?â
âThatâs true â and I couldnât burn them even if I wanted to which blows.â
âToo bad, Iâve been hoping to see a fire or two today and so far Iâve been disappointed. Did you piss off someone to wind up with that mountain of paper?â
âIâm the one with the nursing degree here, unless you want to figure out how to take care of yourself, you really shouldnât be talking.â
âOkay, sure, but are you certain this is the best and least painful way to get the glass out of my hand?â

âYes, Iâm sure. But do you know whatâs an even better idea? You shutting up.â
âCanât shut up. Literally canât. Donât know how anymore. Iâve worked in radio so long I donât know how to be silent.â
âNoâŚââ It was a TERRIBLE idea. âBut itâs the only I have, so Iâm sticking with it.â She had to sleep somewhere, that much was for sure.Â
âWhy are you even climbing a tree though?â he asked obviously confused. âIf youâre trying to get a birdâs eye view, climbing a tree is, in fact, not the safest or even best place around here to get an ariel view. Shocking, I know.â
âLike you have a better idea to get cell reception.â She snapped a little as she got onto the bench of the sidewalk. The telephone pole was right besides her and if she could only get more height to get closer, her reception would be sure to return.
âI do have a better idea, if youâre trying to make a call.â He nodded at a telephone booth. âItâs called a telephone booth. I know you youngâins probably donât know what it is, but itâs like a cellphone that works on wires in the ground instead of radio waves.â He dug through his pockets and pulled out a handful of change, âGot a couple quarters if you need.â
âhonestly? NO.â he began, with a small shrug of shoulders. âbut i like to believe that weâll never know UNLESS we try.â
âThatâs assuring. Need a hand? What are you even trying to do?â
ââŚAnd what a lovely, heroic end that would have made for yours truly. I can see the headline now,â Ashton drawled, âHow does this sound? Local Man Dies During Finest Hour of Giving to Society: The Candy Bar That Ended It All. Nice ring to it, no?â
âHeadline of the decade, have you considered a career in radio?â he joked.

âno, i canât leave my post. youâll have to wait for another officer to get here to check for you.â
His frustration was on overdrive, it felt like he was talking with a brick wall. âThatâll take too long. No to mention that seems like a waste of another officerâs time, and I know there isnât a lot of spare officers around here. Please, just let me go through Iâll be twenty minutes, thirty tops. If Iâm not back within the hour you can issue a warrant for my arrest or whatever.â
âThrowing a stick at the electric fence to measure how many kilowatts of energy the fence is using to accurately be able to treat electricity burns is not stupid, radio-man. And it will not go horribly wrong, either. Have some faith, will ya?â Jade rolled her eyes, before brandishing her large stick, taking a step or two further back from the fence itself. âReady?
Being called âradio-manâ didnât exactly offend him, but it wasnât exactly his favourite nickname either. âCall me Topher, and no Iâm not ready,â he said, knowing that answer would likely be ignored by the girl. He stepped backwards with her. âTen bucks that the stick catches on fire.â
âThe amount of paperwork thatâs sitting on my desk â I need a break.â
âBurn it all,â he was joking, âThereâs always fires in happening during disasters, at least in the movies there is.â
â Sigh escapes in a loud huff of air, emerald orbs finally lifting from her phoneâs surface. Thereâs no use in trying to contact anyone, sheâs well aware that it wonât change anything. Once youâre in quarantine youâre in until itâs safe again, or the worst case scenario picks up. âJesus Christ ââ Agitation riddled through her tone as her head snaps towards the other person, gaze narrowing. âWill you stop that? Itâs not going to make this any better.â
Topher had always enjoyed entertaining small children. Kids could be fickle with what they thought was funny, but for some reason those little assholes always loved to watch grownups fail miserably at something. Juggling was not a talent Topher had, so he was currently trying to do so with a handful of pens, letting them drop on his head or near the child. Waiting in line for this checkpoint was boring anyways, so this was entertaining to both him and the little girl. He was surprised when a woman snapped at him. âYour kid seems to like it though,â he pointed out.
Cassia finally decided to return to the hospital after being scared to step foot in the building when they announed the 48 hour quarantine. She walked to the nurses station taking a seat in an open chair. She grapped a cup of coffee as she read through some files trying to figure out who she had to see next. With the quarantine more healthy people were coming in freaking out that they had the virus, giving the staff a bigger workload.
Topher didnât panic easily, but his sister not having contacted him since this outbreak started was starting to scare him. He had called her multiple times, gone to her apartment and checked her workplace, but she was no where to be found. The last place he could think of was the worst - the hospital. If she was here, sick or worse, he wouldnât know what he would do. He approached the only person he saw not currently attending to a patient. âIâm sorry, but have youâve seen this girl, has she been in here?â he asked, passing his phone over with a picture of his sister brought up.

âItâs a candy bar, and the kid was five years old. Whatâs the worst that couldâve happened?â
âFor all you know, that kid was a deadly carrier of the infection sweeping the nation. You could have potentially been bitten by a carrier and died.â His words were dramatic but his voice was monotone.
âWell, I think itâs safe to say that weâre all gonna die, right?â she asked, slipping a cigarette from between her lips and resting it smack dab in the middle of her ring and middle finger. âDonât need to worry about my lungs now, do I?â
âWhat are you, like twelve? Who even bought you those?â
