Ah, youāre learning. Good. Knowing not to throw things at others is the first step to becoming a functional member of society.Ā Natasha fought to clamp down on a grin as she set down her phone and reached for the coffeepotāit wasnāt normal, her wanting to smile so often in such a short period of time. Regardless, it was rare to find someone comfortable enough with her presence to have the audacity to be sarcastic, much less borderline rude around her. It was oddly satisfying.
In all seriousness, though, it was a good thing that Stark was perceptive enough not to throw things in her direction (much less in Barnesā direction). No matter who it was, her automatic reaction to airborne projectiles would always be ācatch it and hurl it back (except fatally),ā which could only end badly for the person on the receiving end.
And Iām sure JARVIS would argue he contributes his own unique kind of āawesomeā that he most certainly did not inherit from you. Itās too sophisticated for that.
She took a sip of her newly-poured coffee, then rolled her eyes and picked up her phone from the counter again as the screen lit up with a new message. Her eyes flickered over the text, and she nodded absently in agreement. Rogers was notoriously hard to find when he didnāt want to be found (at least the SHIELD techs thought so), given his propensity to forgo any and all kinds of typical technology in his wanderings.
Make no mistake, Stark, he would have been a threat whether I had brought your attention to it or not. Unfortunately, he is also now aware that weāor Iāknow him to be a threat. That makes things slightly more difficult for surveillance, but not impossible. You get the tracker, Iāll handle the rest.
Excuse you, I am a perfectly capable member of society, he texts back. He glances up to catch her eye before rolling his own dramatically. Of course, Tony knew he wasn't a functional member of society. As did Natasha. It was why he'd hired a P.A. in the first place. When you were a young genius/billionaire, no one really expected you to be a functional human being on your own.
J knows how awesome he is and that he'd be nothing without me, Tony insists at her next message. And I can see that Barnes is a threat. He paused for a moment to imagine the hell he would have caused if he had thrown something at Natasha. Mayhem, blood, pain - yeah, sometimes, that survival instinct came in handy.
The bots are assembling the last bit of the tracker now,Ā he sent.Ā Which is what they were instructed to do as soon as Tony left the lab. He'd tweaked the code again and he hadn't planned to leave until it was finished compiling. Should be plenty finished by now, if maybe a tiny bit buggy. But it was good enough for what they needed it to do.
What are your headcanons about me?
Just curious.Ā
This sounds really fucking awesome.
Guys make headcanons about me.

I suppose I can give you that one. His personality is much superior, Natasha sent with the barest flash of teeth belying her grin.
Judging by his expression, Barnes must be very lost by now, she thought with the slightest twinge of satisfaction. Even if his memories of the Red Room were as muddled and hazy by this point as hers had become, she was willing to bet they both remembered training sessions where he had continually left her in the dustāboth mentally and physically. The opportunity to repay him in kind, petty as it was, was undeniably satisfying.
She would never admit that aloud.
Sauntering into the kitchen to refill her coffee mug, Natasha tapped away at her screen, silently snorting to herself at the idiocy of messaging a man who was standing less than six feet away from her. Now on his second round of coffee, Stark was looking much less like a walking corpse than he had ten minutes ago, which was a decided improvement. Heās still going back to sleep after this, she decided, and pressed send.
If the Captainās not around, there are two options from here. One, you tell him to go and I make sure he goes. Two, you fix that arm you gave him without letting him out of both of our sights, and then you tell him to go. Iāll let you make that choiceāitās your tech, after all.
If you weren't a ninja and could probably kill me with anything in this room, I'd throw something at you. Because I am awesome. JARVIS is pretty awesome, too, but all his awesome was inherited from me, Tony texts back.
Admittedly, Tony was still kind of amazed that despite having two previously brainwashed assassins in his kitchen, he wasn't freaking out. Normal people would freak out. Tony Stark invites the assassins in for coffee and pizza.
He stifled a yawn, eyeing the data feed from JARVIS. There was no sign of Rogers yet. When Natasha's text came in, he nodded almost imperceptibly. JARVIS is using all of his awesome and incredibly advanced tech to find Cap. In the meantime, since we've got him here it'll probably be best to track him. Which is what I was going to do regardless of whether or not you'd found out he'd been here and decided he was a threat.
It wasn't paranoia if people really were out to get him, was it?

So modest, Stark. Itās a blessing to the rest of us he didnāt inherit your ego along with your brains. Natasha suppressed a shudder at the thought of an artificial intelligence with both Starkās intellect and his massively inflated egoāitād be even worse than Skynet, she mused. It would probably end up going crazy, taking over the world, and subsequently abandoning it a few days later because it had gotten bored.
Natasha took another sip of her coffee, swirling it around in the bottom of the mug as she lowered it to rest lightly against her abdomen. Glancing up at Barnes through her eyelashes, she noted his continued silence and slightly awkward stance in the middle of the room. He seemed to not know how to answer her question about what happened, and instead had chosen to remain silent. Silence was just fine, as she was more than happy to remain silent until he wanted to talk. Outwaiting his patience was easyāthis she knew for a fact.
Her phone lit up again, displaying a new message from Stark, confirming both the previous existence of a tracker for Barnesā prosthetic and Starkās (or Pepperās, more likely) forethought into a separate Avengers organization. She nodded in satisfaction. Although Natasha would never voice it aloud, she would be more than content to leave SHIELD completely in her dust. She had joinedāand stayedābecause of two things. But now, one of them was gone, and the other had been badly used by the organization itself. If the Avengers separated from SHIELD, she knew without question where she would go.
And it wasnāt back into the depths of SHIELDās specialist program.
Good. Glad you have a tracker readyāitās always best to be prepared. Hereās a thought: is the Captain around? Iām content to wait until Barnes decides to talk, but knowing your levels of patience, you wonāt last that long. Rogersā presence might be enough incentive to get him talking.
I'm brilliant enough that I had the sense to make sure he didn't have my ego. Pepper's sense and Tony's genius is what he had been going for. Tony did a great job, he thought.
Rogers was a simple solution, obvious really. Call him up, lead him to Stark Tower, to the residential floors, have him talk to Barnes and convince Tony and Natasha that no one was getting assassinated or mauled.
But getting in touch could prove difficult. Tony wasn't sure if Cap had a cell phone, let alone carry it with him. It was a bit of a long shot, but JARVIS could try to find him. I can try to get him here. No guarantees.
And with that, he began typing up commands on his phone for JARVIS. Every available resource would go to finding the captain. Fury probably wouldn't like JARVIS hacking into their database again, but Tony was already sick of waiting for explanations. He wanted this done with yesterday. Any accessible cameras in the area were hacked into and monitored for Steve.
If they were lucky, the numbers JARVIS dialed would reach him. If not, well, they'd just have to figure something else out.

Out of the corner of one eye, Natasha watched Stark stabbing at the screen of his phone, clearly frustrated. She sighed quietly, taking another sip of coffee. She had obviously tripped his paranoid switch by slipping inside JARVISā systems, and as much as that would be inconvenient, the information JARVIS had been able to provide had been more helpful than anything she had been able to find on her own while Stark had been passed out on top of her leg.
Was it your private information he was leaking? I donāt see the problem with providing information that could benefit your safety. Besides, itās not like Iād use JARVIS to bypass your own security systems, much less access your private information in the first place. JARVIS has far too much sense to like anyone whoād do that. You taught him well.
Her eyebrows shot up nearly to her hairline at the beginning of Starkās second text. The man had nerve, sheād give him that. She stared at the back of his head as he stood in the kitchen, her gaze boring into the back of his skull. He was very, very lucky he hadnāt said that aloud. Natasha didnāt take kindly to those who commented on her levels of attractiveness, a habit cultivated over years of using her body as a bargaining tool, and having words she had heard directed at her over the years come from someone she considered a teammate was more than slightly annoying.
I will take that as a compliment for now, she tapped out slowly. As for Barnes, my best idea at the moment is for you to do whatever you need to in order to fix that arm, and include a tracker in it when youāre done. Letting him loose for now might be risky, but given time, knowing where he goes and who heās in contact with will give me a better idea of his actual intentions. One corner of her mouth crept upwards in a small, satisfied smirk. And if you can track him, I can anticipate him.
A thought struck her as she reread Starkās last sentence, and she dashed off another short message. Save your assassination accusations for the moment. If Fury is siccing him on you for some idiotic reason, Iāll be more than happy to take care of it. In the mean time, you may want to look at making sure the Avengers are legally separate from SHIELD. Just to avoid any potential unpleasantness later.
Of course I taught him well, he's practically my kid. He inherited my genius mind. And, like JARVIS, Tony was the tiniest bit impressed with her skill. So dealing with her hacking into his servers could wait a bit longer.
He read through her message, rubbing the rim of his mug thoughtfully with his thumb. Of course she wanted a tracker. He'd been working on one already, and had been counting on Bucky coming back so that he could fit it into the prosthetic. The tracker connected to his satellites, and they'd be able to get his position just about anywhere in the world.
He'd been working on some for the rest of the team, too. They were little, easy to hide and could withstand a whole hell of a lot force. Maybe he'd stick them into the comm systems, next time they fought together. Keep an eye on them when they weren't around.Ā
Before he could start replying, another message popped up on his screen. Tony wondered vaguely if Barnes was getting suspicious. But he replied anyway, grinning down at his cup. Way ahead of you. The tracker's in my workshop. After I install it, J will be keeping tabs on him. And I've got Pep working on the SHIELD divorce already.
It had been on a back burner, though, something they were working on when there wasn't any trouble with the company or Big Bads trying to take over the world. It would have to stay there until Tony had time to relax some. But it was nice to have someone on his side in case of an assassination attempt. And there was no one he'd want on his side more than Natasha. Sneaky, sneaky Natasha.
It was good to know that even though he'd thought she was trying to kill him on Nick Fury's orders before, when he was dying, that she'd take Tony's side over Fury's now. There were a lot of people trying to kill him then. First Stane, then Hammer and Vanko, and--
Well, suddenly, the thought that there might be someone trying to assassinate him using the suddenly-brought-back-to-life best friend of his childhood hero wasn't quite as far-fetched as he might have thought.

Natashaās phone lit up in her hand just as she took a sip of coffee from her mug, and she had to stop herself from putting it down immediately to read Starkās response (because, really, what else would it be at this point).
She almost snorted to herself as she read his response. Of course his first response would be to retool JARVIS to keep her out in the future. A faint feeling of guilt ran through the back of her mind as she fired off a quick response (but only a faint feeling. She had trained herself out of true guilt a long time ago). She had grown used to thinking of JARVIS as a person all his own. What would new protocols do to the way he was?
Donāt rewrite JARVIS just because of me. I have a feeling he was far kinder to me than he could have been. Besides, heās just trying to look out for you. Isnāt that what you programmed him to do?
Natasha paused as her screen lit up again, displaying a second message from Stark, probably written on the heels of his first. Her eyes slid up to Barnes standing in the room, staring with faint confusion into the bottom of his coffee, then continued in their slow surveillance of the surrounding space.
Iād rather you didnāt lump us in the same category. Keep in mind that he is the only person in the room who might possibly kill you today. And unfortunately, he might not even be aware of whatever objectives were programmed into him. His protestations of innocence may very well be true on the surface, but that doesnāt mean they hold true for whatās underneath.
JARVIS likes you and if he keeps taking a liking to people there are going to be more holes in my security than in the government's. Tony taps out, frustrated. He isn't keeping me safe by leaking private information.
At least he's still following protocol, Tony thinks helplessly, just as Natasha's second text comes through. Well, you are much sexier than Barnes is, he adds to his message. What do we do with him? Find a holding cell? Call Fury and tell him he sucks at assassination attempts?
He very nearly rolled his eyes. Tony was tired of this, the uncertainty and the lack of variables. He wanted to do something, like fix whatever was wrong with Barnes' arm. It would be a shame to let something that nice go to waste. There were a few things that he tried with the prosthetic that he was hoping to use in the armor, too.
He downed the rest of his coffee and stood with a yawn. "The coffee still hot, JARV?" When the AI answered in the affirmative, he poured another cup, and stood in front of the machine, staring at it like it held the answers to life, the universe, and everything.

The screen of her phone lit up underneath her curled fingers, and Natashaās gaze flickered down to it, breaking away from her casual survey of the room.
These are the currently available results, Agent Romanoff. Judging by their contents, however, some are missing.
There was a small list below the text, mostly references to Captain Americaās sidekick in someoneāsĀ reminiscing about the āgood old daysā or a historical review. There were even fewer mentions of the Winter Soldier, mostly from highly classified intelligence databases, many of which would not appreciate knowing that JARVIS could access their systems. (She was too amused by this knowledge to alert them to that fact. Besides, it could be useful in the future.)Ā Only one result stood out.
āThe Adventures of James Barnesā People Watching: Report 1,ā it read (an odd title, no matter what it was), and it was stored in a little-used server floating around the outskirts of SHIELDās networkāthe server had linked with the network aĀ ridiculouslyĀ small amount of times, but its contents had been recorded all the same. A private server, she mused, or a personal one. But what on earth could that odd title indicate?
She tapped the file with one finger and watched the text unfold on her screen.
Thisā¦was not what she had been expecting.
It was a long and rambling report about how the writer had spent days waiting to shoot a particular man in a particular marketplace. And it was purportedly written by James Barnes himself.Ā What was this?
Natasha scrolled through it again, more carefully this time, and her left eyebrow quirked upwards as her eyes flicked through the words. The writerāwho wasĀ possibly James himselfāsounded almost as if he were whining as he complained about the drawn-out lead time of the mission. Complaining, and colloquial, and firmly American in his language and his tone.Ā This man is not the soldier I knew, she decided as she reached the end of the report. That should have been a good thing. But a strange pang of loss echoed in her chest as she thought, The soldier is gone.
Maybe he had been telling the truth about working for SHIELD. Maybe. But even then, where were SHIELDās records of his surrender, his employment, his existence, anything? Someone, somewhere, was trying to keep secrets. Natashaās lips flattened as she pressed them together, already plotting her next move. More than a few SHIELD offices would be rifled through in the coming days, not to mention strategic bugs in certain key locations.
Nobody kept secrets from her.
Raising her eyes from her phone, Natasha noticed Starkās white-knuckled grip on his mug and hand slipped partway into his pocket, fingers undoubtedly resting on his phone. JARVIS had alerted him to her actions, she realized, and he didnāt seem to be pleased. Under any other situation, she wouldnāt have blamed himābut her carefully prepared in-case-of-the-worstĀ contingencyĀ plans had all fallen by the wayside, so he would have to deal with the fact that she would take her help where she could find it. Her fingers darted across her screen as she hastily composed and sent a message.
I know how you are about JARVIS. Normally, I wouldnāt have hacked him without your permission, but the circumstances are extenuating. Nevertheless, you should know that Barnes is apparently somewhat telling the truth about working for SHIELD. At the very least, he has contact with Fury and Sitwell. Whether or not he has other motives remains to be seen.
His phone beeped again, but Tony was waiting for it. Fidgeting, he glanced at Natasha before reading the text.
He wanted to pout. He wanted to say, stop being reasonable because you hacked into my systems and JARVIS just let you in because he likes you. Fuckin' JARVIS. Fuckin' Natasha. Fuckin' assassins and super soldiers and brainwashed American icons. Why couldn't he have normal people come by the Tower's residential suites? People he could easily impress with his charm and genius and money?
Well, Barnes had seemed pretty impressed when he'd stopped by, but he didn't count.
J is getting a very stern set of new protocols when this blows over, he texted back.Ā Not that he didn't trust Natasha, but the idea that anyone but himself getting into JARVIS' systems was unnerving. He composed a second message. Why does that not surprise me? All of you damn spies have other motives.Ā

Tense silence fell over the room at the top of Stark Tower, the uneasiness almost palpable in the air. Natasha watched Barnes out of the corner of one eye as Stark walked out from the kitchen to stand beside her, holding his coffee, and his words only vaguely penetrated her awareness as a phrase ran through her mind again and again.
SHIELD pays my blood price, Natalia.
But if the Soldier truly had turned traitor for SHIELD, why had she heard nothing? There had been nothing overheard in the organization, no whispers, no coded memos, no hurried glances passed between SHIELDās highest agents. Even more frightening was the fact that there had been literally nothing about the Soldier caught in the strands of her web of information that stretched around the world. Not a word had been said of his awakening, nor of any of the kills he would undoubtedly have made upon waking.
Either he had been inhumanly discreet up until now, or someone, somewhere, had been keeping things from her.
Had she been asked only a few days ago if she thought the Winter Soldier would ever return, she would have said no. But there he was, standing there in the same room, and even Natasha couldnāt deny the patent reality of his presence. Apparently, her usual methods of investigation hadnāt been enough. It was time to employ outside help.
As Stark moved to sit at the counter, Natasha sauntered over to the end table where she had dropped her phone and scooped it back up with her free hand. Crossing back to the opposite side of the counter from Stark, she leaned one hip against it as she set her coffee down, all the while keeping an eye on Barnes. Her fingers danced across the screen as she began working, the images flashing by too quickly to be seen properly. Her hands stilled for a second as she reached one final screen, which discreetly displayed the Stark Industries logo in one corner as it asked for the userās password.
As she typed in the password, the screen cleared and was replaced with scrolling text. Unauthorized access to this system detected, it blared in bright red font. User will be ejected from the mainframe. User notā The text abruptly stopped, then continued on at a much more sedate pace, this time in a simple black color.
Hello, Agent Romanoff. This is unorthodox.
Sorry for the intrusion, JARVIS, she typed quickly, her eyes more often on the room around her than on the words on her phone. But this situation has gone beyond normal parameters.
I am aware of the situation, Agent. Am I to assume that your hacking into my mainframe means that you require my assistance, but discreetly? A smile threatened to creep its way across her face.
Yes, thank you, she typed quickly. I need to know everything on James Barnes and his activity as the Winter Soldier, especially during these last few years. And I need to know why he says he works for SHIELD.
I can do that, Agent Romanoff.
She let out a soft breath, concealing the depths of her relief. Thank you.Ā After a pause, another message popped up on the screen.
I should alert you that all security breaches of my mainframe must be reported to Mr. Stark.
Natasha bit her lip hastily to smother her inadvertent smile, glancing over at the man sitting across from her. Itās fine, JARVIS. I would be more surprised if you didnāt have to report it.Ā Hopefully Stark wouldnāt be too upset that she had slipped so far inside his systems, since it was for a good cause (even if he might not consider saving his sorry hide a good cause, she certainly did).
A single panel lit up the otherwise empty workshop. As Natasha typed on her phone in the kitchen, the computer began to record the access to the mainframe. Along the bottom, bright red text scrolled. Unauthorized access, security protocols screamed, a breach, alert alert alert --
JARVIS silenced them before the alarm could sound throughout the house.Ā
If JARVIS had human emotions, he would say that he was impressed with Natasha's skill. It was rare that anyone had the guts to hack into his system, and rarer still that anyone would get that far. But he didn't, so he focused most of his resources on the security protocols Tony had set up in case of such a situation. He recorded the incident, compressing the information into a single text sent to Tony's cell phone. The rest of his processes went to monitoring Tony's vital signs (normal breathing elevated blood pressure elevated heartbeat), and searching through the database for James Barnes the Winter Soldier.
Tony's phone gave a nearly silent beep, and it took most of his self control to not jump and scream profanities. But it had been muffled by his pocket, so neither of the assassins in the room had heard it. At least, he hoped they hadn't. He casually reached for it, taking a long sip from his mug, and discreetly scanned the text JARVIS had sent him.Ā
He gripped his mug a bit tighter, and hoped that he wasn't reacting too obviously. It wasn't the right time or place for that sort of conversation, and definitely not for the reaction he wanted to have. But honestly, the reaction he wanted to have, which included a lot of yelling about Natasha staying out of his toys and a multitude of curses, probably didn't have a right time or place. Assassins, he mentally scoffed.
Tony took another long swallow from his mug, hoping that he was disguising his slight nod at one of the cameras. The damn AI really did like Natasha, for whatever reason. Tony just hoped that whatever information she was looking up, it would be useful.
With the confirmation from Tony, JARVIS compiled all the information he could access from as many databases he had access to (and a few he didn't) and sent it to Natasha's phone.

Home. || Steve & Tony
Steve couldnāt help the laugh that escaped his mouth as the other man spoke. He really didnāt think Tony was being serious about flying off to Hawaii because that just wasnāt something people did. At least not from what heād known. However, it was apparent to the āman out of timeā that things had indeed changed while heād been frozen in the arctic and maybe people did fly off to random destinations whenever they wanted to. Certainly billionaires had the amount of money necessary to do so at their disposal. But even so, why would Tony take Steve on a trip to Hawaii. To two barely got along as it was and Steve wasnāt sure theyād ever be completely okay with one another. Of course he assumed the man was joking, but he was still getting used to him.
If his expression before had seemed friendly and unguarded before, it was mostly tight and slightly taken aback at Tonyās questioning. Steve pushed back from the table, pressing his back against his seat as he glanced at the table before meeting Tonyās gaze. āIāve got my own apartment, thanks.ā The male tried to make his words sound less bitten off, but his temper had somehow gotten the better of him and he was just a bit irritated. Why? Well he couldnāt exactly say. Just that Tonyās remark had seemed a bit presumptuous and insulting to him. āAnd it may not be the best, but its better than nothing at all.ā Steve no longer met the other manās gaze as he watched the door where their waitress had disappeared through. Mostly he was just upset because the question had struck something of a nerve. Yes, Steve had an apartment and he liked it, but it still felt lonely at times.
Tony watched as Steve's laugh turned into a pinched sort of expression at Tony's question. He mentally cursed. That didn't go like he'd planned. Tony'd been hoping for more of a 'please save me from my loneliness,' and not a 'fuck off, Stark,' reaction, even though he knew that wasn't likely.
This was unusual, though. People always wanted something from him, even though they didn't always admit it. Tony was obviously missing something. Someone like Steve wouldn't come to Tony to ask for help, so he'd have to work especially hard to figure out what Cap needed.
Silence stretched on for a moment before Tony realized that Steve wasn't looking at him anymore, and considering what Tony had just said, he was probably irritated now. With a despairing glance at the kitchens, Tony decided to redirect the entire conversation.
"So, burgers! Pretty great, am I right?" And that wasn't exactly what he'd planned to say, but he kept going. "I mean, I brought you to one of the best joints I know, because these burgers are just amazing. Juicy and not greasy like those fast food chains, let me tell you."
Babbling was good. It was easy. And maybe he could backtrack and sort of apologize for upsetting Steve and Steve's probably very boring and lonely apartment. Somehow. Ā With a somewhat relieved expression, Tony watched as Maria (Or maybe Mariah?) began to bring their order over from the kitchen.

Okay, so my computer is being a bit weird, and being an IT student i naturally have not had the time to look at it. I'm also babysitting three days a week, and chasing a 3 year old is not very conducive to writing replies. So I'm not going to be online as much as I'd like. I'll probably be looking at/working on replies during the week, but I'll only be able to post on monday/wednesday nights for a while, most likely the rest of this month.
