I really hope you finish soon!!!!!! I wish I was more help. said: I just had a Druid join my campaign and ive been looking all over for a once and for-all solution. it's much better for a druid to keep their human form as the default.Brian S. The moment they have to go through a door, move silently, get to a flying enemy, or otherwise doing anything that requires a new form you'll have to change. This leads to the 'abuse' of a druid staying in wild shape constantly is pretty much non-existant. Consider these points:ĥ) the most optimal combat form is always going to be larger than human size.Ģ) the most optimal form for one type of situation is rarely the best for another (a druid in the form of a mouse may be nearly impossible to spot, but if he wants to actually fight he's going to need to change)ģ) even taking into account various ways around it (wild armor, dire ape form) druids are going to lose access to almost all their magical objects when they change. The only time the druid's wildshape tends to get out of hand is when the party is simply roaming around the wildnerness (which really shouldn't be a shock, that's where druids are meant to be after all), in dungeon or urban situations they are hardly going to stay in wild shape 24/7 because they would be constantly forced to be transform back into human form. The duration is not at all abusive, because it's generally a bad idea for a druid to stick to one shape all the time, because just one shape is almost never going to be suitable for what he needs all the time, all he's doing is wasting his first use of wildshape for the day. Honestly, wild shaping isn't nearly as overpowered as many seem to think. Taking away the animal companion also gives one less thing to track during combat (and limited intelligence meant the animal companion was only good in combat anyway). General conclusions are that it's a power reduction from the current wildshape rules, but makes bookkeeping much simpler. (Not to mention wanting some decent armor for when they've shifted back to cast a spell.) Not bing able to use magic items in shapeshifted form limits their power compared to the fighter classes, but because they can shift back and forth freely they have greater ability to use scrolls and staffs and other such items.

Because druids can shift back and forth as many times they want as a free action (but only once per round) their ability to cast spells is only somewhat hindered. However, the druid can't cast spells while shapeshifted (not even with Natural Spell) and they can't use magic items.ÄŤy basing it off the druid's baseline stats, they make strength and dexterity scores important again for a druid who wants to get into combat. These shapeshifted forms can be described as looking like whatever animal the player pleases, as that's purely cosmetic. As the druid levels up, he gets more powerful shapeshifted forms with better stat bonuses, movement, and better natural attacks. It can be used at will as a free action as many times a day as the druid likes. Shapeshifting grants bonuses to their baseline physical stats, grants a natural attack, some natural armor, and gives animal-like movement. In return, they get the ability to shapeshift from level 1. The druid loses their animal companion and current wildshape abilities. Click to expand. In the Player's Handbook II, they give an alternate druid shapeshifting option.
