Last week i watched The Backrooms in theater.

The main problem is that the backrooms immediately reminded me of the architecture in Davey Wreden's games, The Stanley Parable in particular (although the more surreal bits reminded me more of The Beginner's Guide)

Which isn't that weird actually, as the Backrooms mostly resemble an empty office space, while the setting of The Stanley Parable is an empty office space. And i think that both The Backrooms and The Stanley Parable rely on the concept of liminal spaces for differing yet similar effects.

But it also meant that I couldn't take The Backrooms fully serious from minute one, because i expected the annoyed British Narrator to come in any minute now.

#To be clear #I don't think that The Backrooms stole its aesthetics from Davey Wreden's games #I am very certain that it's just the same aesthetics coincidentally expressing themselves in different works #it's just something that i noticed and found somewhat intriguing to compare #Like there's a lot you could into about both The Backrooms and the works of Davey Wreden (somewhat) utilise liminal space #To express an unravelling mind #Anyways #The Backrooms Movie is actually a lot better than it has any right to be #Yet it deeply frustrates me because it could've actually been a bit of a masterpiece #If it was done by a more experienced more courageous director

I see a lot of folks defending their vitriolic repugnance towards toddlers with cries of "but my sensory needs!" as if children are not also in possession of sensory needs. As if you, an adult here on Tumblr.com, do not have the capability and resources to learn the skills or acquire aids for coping with competing access needs. Or, y'know, just the option to leave, the way children most often do not.

You're holding an actual child to higher standards than you hold yourself, but it's the child that should be removed from public and community spaces. For your comfort.

Go fuck yourselves.

This is not an exaggeration. Your download speed would slow down to the point where Windows would make this kind of absurd estimate, and you’d sigh and leave the room for a while (because you couldn’t use the computer while it was doing this for fear it would crash and lose all your progress) and then you’d come back in 40 minutes and maybe it would now say 52 years or maybe it would say 3 minutes, who knew, not Windows.

Yes, haha funny, the AI is bamboozled by spelling, but seriously: I asked Google the same question 5 different times just now, and not only did I get 5 incorrect answers, I got 5 completely different incorrect answers.

The fact that they're different every time demonstrates just how much of an LLM's output is up to random chance. This is how LLMs imitate human language: each stage of constructing the text has built-in randomness, just like how human language has variation and flexibility.

This is my problem with using these things in the workplace. Like, imagine you're using an LLM to fill out a report of an accident that happened, or to write dietary recommendations for a patient, or to give feedback on a paper a student wrote...really anything you can think of.

Even if the LLM-generated text doesn't say anything technically flat-out wrong, the words and details are still randomized instead of being chosen by you for an actual reason.

Using an LLM for these tasks means it doesn't matter to you exactly what you write, what words you use, what details you include, or what meaning it has, just that it looks like you wrote something.

I’ll also point out that it’s also not good for writing code for the exact same reasons. Part of working on a codebase is working within established coding patterns and architectural decisions so that other people can easily navigate it. If every single module is written completely differently than, inevitably, when some human has to go in there and fix a bug it becomes much harder since every file is written completely different even if they handle the same problem-space. If one module is completely object oriented and uses class instantiation for everything and another that solves a similar problem is functional programming and relies entirely on pure functions then trying to figure out how they are supposed to work together is infinitely harder than just using one model.

It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!

And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade
