Design Studio IIA 2020

In these prototypes the user experiences a navigation menu that is straight to the point and less cluttered than most menus. To make this design slightly interactive i had the background of the webpage stay still while the content would scroll, giving an illusion of more control for the user. having an easy to navigate website that gives an illusion of control I want users to come to the idea of bees wraps comfortably with this design. This is further iterated with colour schemes with hints of pastel, imagery of nature in the background (excluing “The impact” page) and simple drawings. To give it more style I played with the position of text and the design of the scrolling pages themselves. Overall I hope this has the capacity to change minds or give users an enjoyable experience.

Mobile:

I have chosen Beeswax wrap as my issue to settle on. I chose this because I think it is something easy that all people can use that save plastic rubbish as well as supporting the survival of bees by becoming more reliable on their wax.

There are a few beeswax wrap businesses out there however I have chosen DeesBees and Lilybeewrap for their locality as well as their well designed products and informative websites

The lilybeewrap website seemed to focus more on the sustainable side of the wrap as well as having a more sophisticated look. It had plenty of articles and content in the website including videos, DIY etc. 

Dee’s Bees seemed to focus more on the products, the website bombarded with product information. However, the dee’s bees wraps were less expensive.

IMO the lilybeewrap appealed to me more out of the two, however in terms of my website design I think I will aim for a sophisticated/aproachable website that is more simple so that information is clear.

When researching for stats/evidence of the big impact, I found it hard to find the impact of plastic wraps specifically. However, it is clear that plastic that is not recycled is dangerous for the planet - thus, every time you reuse a wax wrap is one cling wrap/ tinfoil/ baking paper that is not being disposed of.

Paper prototyping what i think would be a more navigatable version (specifically for finding vcd level 300 electives) of the massey website. I simplified the website so that it wasn’t so confusing and prioritised what i thought people would come to the massey website for, i also made the course/programme page easier to navigate.

This is the website I will be showing the class, I chose this one because I think it caters to their audience well (people looking for statistics and information). The graphs slide with the writing conveniently so you can read without having to go back and forth to the graph. Some graphs you can interact with so that it shows specific information you are looking for.

Small Action/Big Impact Ideas

Some ideas I have been looking at:

Fig 1: Secondhand shopping and recycling clothes to contribute less to the pollution, clothing waste and unfair labour

Fig 2: Predator Eradication to protect native bird species and other areas damaged by rodents. I like this idea as once it is setup the only effort users have to put in is emptying and resetting, however I did find it hard to find solid evidence and statistics that prove birds’ contribution in the fight agains climate change.

Fig 3: Food production heavily pollutes the environment with waste as well as stripping natural habitats for empty plots for farming. One way to change this is to change to a vegan diet, however personally I would find this inconvenient as well as it being hard to change eating habits.

Here are my notes from the UX test which my flatmate done. They were a second year student at Maseey which proved to help them in the first exercise as they knew which sites to check out however the websites themselves were’nt very helpful for navigating. However, when using google, the elctive courses came up as pdfs in the 3rd result down which was much more effective than the website, also similar on the mobile device which she also used google.
