If you set yourself a goal and work toward it, you are using clock time. You are aware of where you want to go, but you honour and give your fullest attention to the step that you are taking at this moment. If you then become excessively focused on the goal, perhaps because you are seeking happiness, fulfilment, or a more complete sense of self in it, the Now is no longer honoured. It becomes reduced to a mere stepping stone to the future, with no intrinsic value. Clock time then turns into psychological time. Your life journey is no longer an adventure, just an obsessive need to arrive, to attain, to “make it”. You no longer see or smell the flowers by the wayside either, nor are you aware of the beauty and the miracle of life that unfolds all around you when you are present in the Now.

Any tips on eliminating desire in your life? Have a blessed day!
Notice the difference between the fulfilling of desires that you can move on from and the cyclic desires that keep you coming back for more. If you can fulfill a desire and be done with it forever, then do so! If you keep coming back for more, recognize there is a problem.
“All you want is to be happy. All your desires, whatever they may be, are longing for happiness. Basically, you wish yourself well…desire by itself is not wrong. It is life itself, the urge to grow in knowledge and experience. It is choices you make that are wrong. To imagine that some little thing–food, sex, power, fame–will make you happy is to deceive oneself. Only something as vast and deep as your real self can make you truly and lastingly happy.” ~ Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
Recognize what it is you are seeking by means of desire. Then ask yourself if that is the most effective means towards happiness. Take something simple and tangible, like smoking cigarettes. Cigarettes make you feel anxious unless you have smoked one. This trains you to desire cigarettes in order to feel calm. But it is not real calm.
Desires can be like that. They pretend to give you something while in reality they rob you of it.
“Deny yourself nothing–give yourself infinity and eternity and discover that you do not need them; you are beyond.” ~ Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
When engaging in cyclic desires, whatever your “poison” may be–sex, substances, money, status–bring in more and more mindfulness into the moment. Be keenly aware of yourself and present in the moment before, during, and after the act. This not only helps you to savor it more but it also helps you to get “over” it. You become aware of the part of yourself that does not change throughout the whole endeavor.
Gradually, our longing for freedom will take over. The bad kind of desires are the kind that limit our freedom and our happiness. When we see and experience this for ourself, it becomes easier to shun them. When you no longer seek to find happiness and identity in a thing, it falls away.
While you can always try depriving yourself and fighting yourself, I find it isn’t always the most effective method. Satisfy what you can satisfy. Otherwise align your intent so that you are always aspiring for peace, freedom, and happiness. Be ready to forsake smaller forms of happiness for greater forms. Eventually nothing but the realization of your eternal Self itself will satisfy you. As my guru says, asking for anything else is like asking for a candy when you can own the candy factory.
Daily meditation and constant mindfulness will help to guide you.
Namaste :)
We have suffering because of desires and not being able to quench our thirst for our desires. To end suffering, we need to realize that our desires are the cause of our suffering and not the end to our suffering.
What is Prayer? 5 Ways of Using Prayer for Mindfulness
The common understanding of prayer involves you talking or communicating with something else, something more powerful, with the intent of getting something out of it, receiving something you don’t already have.
As many self-proclaimed free thinkers and atheists have pointed out, this is little different than talking to an imaginary friend with the hope that it will somehow solve your problems or create miracles.
If you ask me, both perspectives are pretty useless.
Prayer is an ancient and timeless technology. You have prayed before, even if it wasn’t under the pretense of prayer. It is a natural happening that overtakes us in very special moments. But it is up to us to allow those moments to go from being special to absolutely ordinary in the most beautiful way.
Prayer is about listening, not speaking. When you pray, you connect with the larger picture. You connect not as a small piece of a large puzzle but rather as a piece that contains the whole. Everything is in You and You are in Everything. Prayer is the remembrance of this basic truth.
For prayer you need to become a receiver. You need to empty yourself so that the divine may fill you.
The following are five perfect times to pray.
1. When you wake up in the morning.
The first moment you realize you are awake, what normally enters your mind? Is it something you are looking forward to, something you wish you could avoid, a desire, a rejection, a depression? The first moments of our wakefulness help to set the tone for our day.
Instead of transitioning directly from sleep into the cravings of the mind, take a moment to pause. That is a perfect time for prayer.
Get out of bed, stretch, and sit down somewhere comfortable. Become still and relaxed, empty yourself. You have the whole day to plan and worry and excite.
Sit with the Tao, with the moment, and just soak it in. Feel something shining into you. Shine outward into everything. Then go about your day.
2. Before eating meals.
When you consume a meal, you are partaking in a replenishment. Every seven years the entirety of the cells in your body have been replaced. You are not an independent phenomenon but rather exist as an example of interdependence.
The earth gave birth to your existence. Your existence is only sustained because around it is a living system that constantly supplies nourishment while recycling whatever is left.
Before you eat, enter Silence. A great many things had to live and die, grow and assemble, for this one meal. Even the simplest meal is a great wonder. Take this moment to acknowledge the fact that your body is a product of all that has sustained it and even when your body is sustaining something else, you will still Be. Connect to this larger picture. Then chow down!
3. When you feel a change in emotion.
People can never seem to decide whether to celebrate their emotions or escape from them. But either way, emotions are there. We are human and they are the color palate we use to paint our existence.
Changes in emotion are the perfect time for prayer because prayer reminds us that emotion is temporary. Prayer acts as a way of keeping all things in perspective.
When you feel yourself being moved to anger, or desire, or jealousy, when you are being made to feel like there is something you are lacking, enter prayer.
Welcome your emotion with open arms and immediately connect it to the whole. That is prayer. When you can see an emotion as it arrives, you will remember that it will also go. This will develop a relaxed equanimity in you.
4. When you are in the presence of Fear.
We think of fear as the terror that possesses us when our lives are in danger. And yes, that is fear. But the more dangerous fears are the small fears we let plague us every day. We are afraid of certain people, of what they may think, or of what we may think. We are afraid to lose and sometimes afraid to win. There are many kinds of fear.
When you feel fear, pray. Don’t ask for anything to happen, for your fear to magically disappear. Instead, forget your fear through prayer. The tao is always flowing, the Divine is always shining, your Soul is always blissing. Prayer is remembering the Divine Tao of your Soul at any chosen moment.
When you remember the tao, you are no longer at odds with the object of your fear. This is because you and the object of your fear are ultimately part of the same Picture. But because you are busy defending your body and its perceived separate existence, you allow fear to enter. Prayer is when you stop defending yourself. That is surrender.
And when you stop defending yourself, surrendering the ego, the divine will have an opening through which to shine through you.
5. Before going to sleep.
A great many things happen throughout the course of a day. Every day someone new is trying to condition you. New experiences are trying to condition you. Everything is trying to tell you who you are. And you are so desperate to know who you are that you are willing to listen.
Before going to sleep, silence the voices of the world. And then silence your own voice. Sit somewhere that feels right to you and enter Stillness. Let your existence shine through you. Let Existence shine into you.
There is nowhere to go, nothing to become, nothing to attain. Give gratitude to the opportunity to appreciate this moment.
Then go to sleep. :)
Prayer is a powerful technique for mindfulness when you can understand the experience of praying. Meditation is a very effective way to develop your capacity to pray. So is art, contemplation, and music. Contemplate these words and give it a try for a few weeks. You’ll discover what I mean very quickly.

Tonglen: Activating Compassion
To be in touch with one’s self and therefore the universe is the work of the beginning meditator. It demands a person to overcome restlessness, attraction, and repulsion by sitting with whatever thoughts and feelings that arise. Practice and earnestness make this possible. But after one discovers a certain amount of peace in sitting meditation, the next question is now what? How can we bring this peace into our world and not only feel it but deepen it as well?
This takes us to a very special practice that comes from Atisha, an Indian Buddhist teacher who was part of a movement to repopularize Buddhism in Tibet over a thousand years ago. Atisha developed a practical and beautiful technique called tonglen, which is Tibetan for giving and taking. More specifically, tonglen is a way for a meditator to give out compassion and take in suffering.
It is understandable if this seems counterintuitive to you. However, the Tibetan Buddhists saw this as a way to generate fearlessness in the face of the things that scare us. That can be something as mundane as public speaking or as life-changing as childbirth.
For those familiar with meditation, the first form of tonglen is the formalized sitting. Find yourself a comfortable seated position and sit for a short period of meditation. When you are ready to practice the technique, you may open your eyes or leave them closed.
Step One: Openness
Connecting with openness allows us to feel a certain confidence when confronting difficult things. Therefore before we work with the suffering in our lives, it helps to first touch base with our vast Nature. It is a reminder that you can always come back to the peaceful abiding.
To get the feeling of this openness, some people like to apply visualization. They see themselves standing before an endless white fog, at the ocean, or the wide open sky. Whatever gives you a feeling of expansive freedom. When that feeling arises, focus your attention on the feeling and forget the visual. Abide with the feeling for a few minutes.
Step Two: Breathing

What are some key ways to practice patience
When engaging in simple, typically mindless tasks, go slowly. Examples include brushing your teeth, washing your hands, preparing and eating meals, and getting dressed. Instead of rushing or mindlessly engaging these activities, bring mindfulness into the moment. Don’t be lost in thought, be present. Someone once told me: Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Explore this truth for yourself.
Practice daily meditation. Period.
Read certain poetic scriptures such as the Dhammapada, Bhagavad Gita, Ashtavakra Gita, Ribhu Gita, and Avadhuta Gita. Or just read poetry. Learn to slow your attention down when soaking up art.
Get an adult coloring book. Don’t rush to finish a piece. Instead work your way through it bit by bit. Learn to work while relaxed.
Take a yoga class.
Experiment with various pranayama breathing techniques such as alternate nostril breathing.

Ways to practice patience. I think I need this.
If your mind carries a heavy burden of past, you will experience more of the same. The past perpetuates itself through lack of presence. The quality of your consciousness at this moment is what shapes the future.
Eckhart Tolle (via lazyyogi)
Someone once told me a story about long term relationships. To think of them as a continent to explore. I could spend a lifetime backpacking through Africa, and I would still never know all there is to know about that continent. To stay the course, to stay intentional, to stay curious and connected – that’s the heart of it. But it’s so easy to lose track of the trail, to get tired, to want to give up, or to want a new adventure. It can be so easy to lose sight of the goodness and mystery within the person sitting right in front of you.
