Visual Sequence Self-Critique
For my visual sequence project, I knew I wanted to touch on something twisted and devastating with some occasional homage to the classics. It wasnât long before I settled on the idea of telling a drug story with Barbie and Ken.
I started building the âsetâ by thinking about three movies: Mulholland Drive, Requiem for a Dream, and Sunset Blvd. The story starts with a dream of coming to Hollywood, pursuing fame and glory, finds the party scene and drugs, and Barbie eventually dies Sunset Blvd style: facedown in a pool.
Looking back, I liked the jarring imagery and the irony of Barbie and drug abuse. I also liked how the âsetâ looked with the computer screen in the back as changing background. However, I was a little obsessed with the idea of drug use as s state instead the continuity and fluidity of the story. I tried to fix the problem in my revised version by giving more weight to the character of Ken. In the original version, he does not have any sort of resolution. I strengthened the subplot of him pushing Barbie into the rabbit hole of drug abuse to make him more relevant at the ending and Barbie more of a victim. Furthermore, I fixed the continuity problem at the end where she appears to be dead and back alive and dead again.

Find a Web Series
The Philip DeFranco Show is a web series news show that I follow regularly. Personally I have a strong dislike about discussions about the average political and social issues for numerous reasons. However, I enjoy the discussions inspired by the Philip Defranco Show because he promotes logic, common sense and listen to the oppositions despite personal believes. I respect Phil as a creator and therefore even though his personal opinion differs from my own, I find it not difficult to see where he comes from and understand his reasoning. I find the click bait thumbnails and the over-dramatic titles a bit over the top from time to time but I do understand the purpose of these things and at the end of the day, I like the content of the show regardless of the title.
The target audience of the show is, as for as I understand, young adults who live a fast, busy lifestyle but like to learn about global events. It is suitable for a wide range of audience excluding maybe children under the age of 10 and people with stubborn political viewpoints.
According to my research, Philip uses social media such as Twitter to promote and send notifications about new uploads. He uses Snapchat once in a while to conduct Q&A programs and recently he did an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit.

Web Series Ideas
Idea #1 Poker Challenge Documentary  Â
I will adapt a vlog style when filming this series. I will be carrying a vlog camera when making my trips to the casinos, and down the road perhaps traveling around the poker circus playing poker. I am extremely excited about this series because as someone with a poker background, I would like to challenge myself and see if I have what it takes to be one of the greatest. By vlogging the experience, not only do I get to motivate myself, but also I would have the chance to promote the game of poker and get more people involved. Potentially, my audience would be either people with a serious poker background, avid players themselves or casual viewers who find the challenge interesting and exciting.
Currently, there are several poker content creators on youtube and twitch. Jason Sommervile for example, is a former professional poker player who now streams playing poker on Twitch, he is also very active on Twitter to promote his streams. He also has a merchandise line promoting the stream. Doug Polk is another poker content creator on Youtube and Twitch. He is even more active on all social media platforms. (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram etc.) Sometimes he goes on live on Facebook to talk about some hot poker issues, and post live updates on other platform when he goes on live poker tournaments and high stake poker games.
Idea #2 Unnamed Traveling Road Show
This will be a scripted traveling show with emphasize on cars and roads. Filming of the show will be a mixture of in-car still camera, drone footages, and other interesting shots of driving performance vehicles on exotic locations. Similar to my other ideas, I like this idea because the theme is something I am passionate about. My target audience is virtually anybody who likes to travel or cars.
This is a mixture of traveling series and daily car vlogs. TJ Hunt is a Youtube personality with early 600k followers. He uses the common social media sites like Snapchat Instagram and Twitter to engage and promote his content. He also has a clothing line called Hunt driving company. Casey Neistat has special videos similar to my original idea where he makes short films about his travels. He mostly uses twitter to promote his content.
Idea #3 The Journey of a International Student in LA
This web series will be the fully scripted and follow standard on-set filming procedures. I chose this topic because I could use my own experience to write some of the episodes. It tells the story of a international student in Los Angeles and deal with common issues such as academics, romance, and potentially future careers. My target audience will be mostly college students, specifically those who share a similar backgrounds.
Similar shows include shows like College Humor and some of Fung Brosâ video regarding the lives of Asian Americans. Both channels are very popular on Youtube with a presence on other social media platforms.
