Thank you, my friends. During Saturday's march, many of you dropped by to see me at the Columbia Shelter and donated feminine hygiene products and other toiletries to help those in need. Others delivered supplies on their own time and own dime. Here is an excerpt from an email I received from my colleague Paul Susi, who works at the shelter and is the true hero in this effort: "Please convey my profound gratitude to all your social media friends who connected with us in this. Our needs are ongoing, but less critical than they were a few days ago, thanks to your efforts! Now, our focus is shifting to things like blankets, clothing (especially clean socks and underwear), baby wipes, shoes and coats. Folks who can only make donations during the day are welcome to drop off at the Bud Clark Commons on NW Broadway and Hoyt. Otherwise, I will be onsite most nights here at Columbia Shelter, 401 SW Washington, starting at around 6:30 pm. These nights onshift are terrible and beautiful, really inspiring and really saddening and everything in between. There's a gentleness to this life, where the dark hours are kept watch over, and there's a frankness in the simple exchanges of greetings. Time passes the way a handshake passes, with a personal warmth. And then of course there are the delusions, the tantrums, the rules and expectations, the redness around the eyes and the quivering in the field of vision." As we move forward in this good fight for our humanity in the face of a terrible wind blowing from the White House, these local acts of kindness and decency are what define us, what put a nourishing zephyr of hope in the sails of resistance as we tack into the future. Let's continue to help if we can with the supplies Paul mentions, as we help those who find shelter from the cold in the beds pictured below.
