Wow. I'm honored to be selected as the recipient of the 2017 ICAM-Music Award - Creative from the UC San Diego Music Department for my work on Narrow Channel!

This award is given to a graduating senior in recognition of achievement in both technical and artistic mastery of the foundations of music and digital media. It is emblematic of accomplishment during a distinguished undergraduate career and, more importantly, the promise of high achievement yet to come. ICAM award winners look beyond the surfaces and learn the underlying aesthetic and scientific principles that will allow them the reinvention of themselves as their careers blossom in a field of endeavor which itself is constantly evolving. ICAM award winners are those who realize that ideas drive technology and the arts, and not the other way around. Narrow Channel: An Acoustic Presentation of San Diego Bay

An installation at UC San Diego's Revelle Plaza featuring simultaneous playback of underwater field recordings from different locations around San Diego bay, highlighting the differences in biologic and anthropogenic sounds as well as the change in sonic characteristics throughout a 24 hour cycle.

I was interested to see if principles such as the precedence effect, high frequency attenuation of a sound over distance, and contrast between local and global reverb could be employed to make more convincing simulations of instrument placement with particular focus on simulating distance from the listener.

Replaced the AOM bridge on the JM Jazzmaster with this roller bridge. Contrary to what the internet says, it was not a drop in replacement. The new bridge has a wider post spacing. I filled the old thimble holes with a walnut dowel and then drilled new holes.

The Solar Radiation Emitter is an interactive sound module that creates multiple octaves of overdriven sine waves. It is not intended to produce delicate, flowery sounds. It creates ugly and irritating noises. The graphics on the Solar Radiation Emitter are derived from a NASA image of the solar wind impacting the Earth’s magnetic Van Allen belts. A simulated “used and abused” metal finish gives some indication of what kind of sounds will be produced.

The Solar Radiation Emitter is inspired by the THX “Deep Note” sound. On launch, fifty different sine waves start at a random frequency between 200 and 300Hz. Over a few seconds, these sounds drift to their target frequencies, randomly selected from a list ranging from 50 to 1000Hz. The drift time for each sine wave is calculated based on the starting and target frequencies so that all tones arrive at their target frequency at the same time.

The Solar Radiation Emitter has a single point of interaction, a red “Diverge” button. This button has a slowly modulating red color until it is clicked and turns green. The changing red color is accomplished by changing the opacity over time of a lighter colored image placed in front of a darker colored version. Clicking on this button causes the frequencies to drift up or down at a prescribed rate. The frequencies will drift as long as the user holds the button down. Downward drifting frequencies take an absolute value of the current value, so that no tones drift below 0Hz. When the button is released, the waves slowly drift back to their original values. This is the “resting” state of the device. In Roy Ascott’s Behaviourist Art and the Cybernetic Vision, he states that in Modern Art “A feedback loop is established so that the evolution of the artwork/ experience is governed by the intimate involvement of the spectator. As the process is open- ended the spectator now engages in decision-making play.” This is means that the final “art” experience is up to the end user. This is true for the Solar Radiation Emitter. It is up to the user to decide how long and how often to hold the “Diverge” button. While the overall aesthetic of the device is controlled by the artist, the final sound output is modulated by the user.

I am very satisfied with the end result of the Solar Radiation Emitter. After seeing Marnix de Nijs and Edwin van der Heide’s Spatial Sounds (100dB at 100km/h) and the way that it assaulted people with noise, I was inspired to create my own art that made ridiculous over the top sounds. I wanted to make art that didn’t give a crap about whether or not it was generating “good” sounds. I feel that I have succeeded.

Remodeled the RAT while I had it apart.

I have made an absolute mess out of these three pedals while trying to convert them over to a standard power jack. Did you know the 1/8" connectors are always positive tip? Also, ProCo RAT knobs are glued to the pots causing self-destruction when you try to take them off. Also, the power jack must be insulated from the case. Also, the correct plug size is 2.1 x 5.5mm.

Blumlein Technique

A quick mix of practice. Experimenting with the Blumlein technique plus a line off of the PA for the vocals. Blumlein sounds amazingly good and makes everybody really watch their volume levels and mix themselves as they play. We set up like the image below, with one small change. The line out of the bass wasn’t very good, so we put the amp right about where the word “horns” is. It was not loud at all in the room, but the ribbon mics picked it up.

Doodle Doodle Doodle: An LED Etch-a-Sketch

The official Doodle Doodle Doodle video. Great job putting this together, Leslie. What a fun project (now that it’s all over.) I’m forgetting the tediousness already. 80 LEDs housed inside ping-pong balls. Two potentiometers control X and Y movement and a reset button, uh, resets everything. On the code side of things, the Y control lights different lights on a shift register and the X knob selects one of ten shift registers. Yay.
