(photos taken by @rad-roach) THIS IS NOT A DRILL FUZZY CANDY COLORED JUMPING SPIDERS ON SALE WITH THE “GIRL TOYS” AT TARGET GIANT LEAP FOR SOCIETY AS A WHOLE.
HOLY sHIT WHAT
look, I’m scared shitless of spiders now, but as a kid I would probably have loved klutzers there
I need one of each.
@axelspark
Where’re the other eyes?
While jumping spiders do technically have eight eyes, some species have a pair or two of eyes that are vestigial and really hard to see on their fuzzy heads, so I’ll give these toys a pass on eye count.
Edit–Although not Bo Dangles. That thing has five eyes and antennae. It’s not a spider.
I posted this not too long ago- most of the responses were heartwarming. Â I was, however, amazed at the number of people that were against catch and release, not because they wanted to kill spiders, but because they believed the myth that spiders that live in our homes cannot survive outdoors.
This is a myth.  Spiders are roughly 250-400 million years old.  Human dwellings have only been around for about 10 thousand.  No spider species is strictly adapted to our dwellings and our dwellings alone.  It may be true that a few out of the 46,000 species are very closely tied to us (hey- we offer free prey and protection from environmental elements), but not one species is dependent on them for survival.  So a guilt-free boot outdoors is totally fine if that’s what you you prefer!  They are wild animals that have been around a lot longer than us, they’ll do just fine outside.  If you want to ignore them and leave them inside- that’s fine too (that’s what I do!), but that isn’t for everyone, and we don’t want to discourage catch & release tactics!Â

Even though they lack ears, it seems that spiders can “hear” everyday sounds up to several metres away with their leg hairs
Here’s a comforting thought. When you arrive home and open the front door or enter your bedroom, the spiders can hear you.
It has long been known that spiders can hear sounds via leg hairs that bend in response to vibrations arriving through the air or through solid objects such as floors or walls. But until now, we thought they could only hear airborne vibrations a few centimetres or “spider lengths” away at most.
It now seems that this same approach actually lets them hear sounds up to 5 metres away.
Gil Menda at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and his colleagues were studying a type of jumping spider,Phidippus audax, that they assumed relied almost completely on sight and vibrations they can feel through other objects, such as leaves or floorboards.
But microelectrodes implanted in the spiders’ brains showed that neurons responded to sounds such as chairs scraping and people clapping even when the noises were made 3 to 5 metres away.
“We were very surprised,” says Menda. “Our studies extended the range of auditory sensitivity to more than 3 metres – over 350 body lengths – for our spiders.”
The team established that the spiders freeze when exposed to low-frequency sounds of about 80 to 400 hertz that resemble a low hum, or buzz. They discovered that this overlaps with the wingbeat frequency of predatory insects such as parasitoid wasps and flies, concluding that the hearing abilities they found in jumping spiders have evolved to help them avoid predators.
This makes it even LESS plausible that they would crawl in your mouth while you are sleeping, or bite you for any reason. You are a mountain that creates wind and thunder, they only want to avoid you.
For several years, I have been observing the odd behavior of the Mirror Spider (Thwaitesia sp.) where the "silver-plates" on the abdomen seem to shrink when the spider is agitated (or perhaps threatened), revealing the actual abdomen. At rest, the silver plates expand and the spaces between the plates close up to become an almost uniform reflective surface. That is why I called it the Mirror Spider. Note that what I am posting are just field observations and not based on scientific literature.
Susan Bellhouse will never look at imported fruit without a tremble of suspicion again. The Edmonton woman is warning other shoppers to be on the lookout after a black widow spider scuttled its way into her home inside a bundle of grapes.
An Australian teen experienced an arachnophobe's worst nightmare as she watched her car float into a river while attempting to shoo away a large spider that surprised her in the car.
This is what happens when a spider-biologist procrastinates in the lab.Â
Black widow on nose to prove a point:
Black widows have a potent neurotoxin.  BUT they are very shy docile spiders. Spiders have evolved venom to eat insects, not bite mammals.  Widows in particular, are even less likely to bite than many other spider species.  Their first defense is to flee, play dead or kick silk.  Venom is energetically costly to produce, they have no reason to waste it on mammals unless their life is severely threatened.  Julia, here is pretty used to being handled by me- so I’ll allow her to be the spokesspider for her misunderstood beneficial species.

Holy -crap-. My new lens is perfect!
From top to bottom, L to R: Zorak, the Ghost Mantis (P. paradoxa), Blackwall the male Regal Jumping Spider (P. regius), Chris the Golden Huntsman (O. giganteus, also proof that even my animals suffer my puns through their names, get it, he’s a Huntsman… derhur), Goldie the Chaco Golden Knee tarantula (G. pulchripes), and Jack, the Dwarf Pumpkin Patch tarantula (H. Sp. Colombia).
Chris and Zorak are -tiny-. Not inches, only millimeters long. Goldie and Jack are on the same size screen that Chris is on in the photo, that’s how tiny he is. I can’t believe how close I can get, it makes me SO HAPPY. I can’t even make out Chris’ coloration with my naked eye. Zorak has already shed once, so he’s a bit bigger, but not by much.
Bonus pic of Blackwall before launching himself directly into my face, he completely missed the lens.
These are my pets. I enjoy and love them dearly. If you don’t have anything nice to say, please just don’t say it. I’ve tagged the crap out of this so anyone who’s freaked out should be able to avoid it.
MY BABIES <3. In glorious detail :D.

Ravine Trapdoor Spiders
This is the cyclosmia (or ravine trapdoor spider), and its incredible abdomen looks like an ancient coin! This genus of spider lives in burrows, and it uses the hardened disc at the end of its abdomen to clog the entrance when it’s threatened. They live in the Western U.S. and Mexico, and Eastern Asia.
