ďżź The first warning sign had been the shedding.
Not the scalesâthose were weird enough on their ownâbut the fur.
âWhy is there so MUCH of it?!â Mikey cried, holding up another clump of dark green fuzz stuck to his arm. âBro, he sheds like an alpaca!â
âHeâs not an alpaca,â Raph grumbled.
âThen why is my pizza furry?!â
Down in the abandoned subway tunnels beneath New York, Y/N ducked his massive head guiltily, giant amber eyes soft and apologetic. The mutant lizard whined low in his throat and shifted his weight carefully.
A mistake.
CRRRRK.
Everyone froze.
Slash slowly lowered the crate of stolen grocery store produce heâd been carrying.
ââŚTell me that wasnât the wall.â
The tunnel wall cracked a little more.
Y/N immediately stopped moving altogether.
ââŚOops.â
For over a month now, the giant mutant reptile had been living underground with Slash and the Mutanimals after the panic from his mutation finally died down. What had started as âtemporary hidingâ had turned into an increasingly complicated situation involving:
1. Fur and scale shedding everywhere.
2. Food costs high enough to bankrupt a small nation.
3. The horrifying realization that Y/N was still growing.
And currently?
Problem number three had evolved into a full-blown disaster.
Because Y/N was stuck.
âOkay,â Slash said slowly, pinching the bridge of his snout. âMaybe if you breathe out.â
âI AM breathing out!â
âLess.â
âHow do I breathe LESS?!â
Y/N was currently wedged sideways between two support pillars in an old maintenance tunnel, one arm pinned awkwardly above his head while his tail disappeared somewhere behind him like a trapped alligator.
The Mutanimals had been trying to free him for three hours.
Three.
Hours.
Mondo Gecko was eating popcorn while watching.
Leatherhead had tried pulling.
That had only succeeded in making Y/N yelp and the tunnel groan ominously.
Slash stared at the disaster in exhausted silence.
Then, with the heaviest sigh of his life, he pulled out his T-Phone.
â
Raph arrived ten minutes later.
He stepped into the tunnel.
Looked at Y/N.
Looked at the cracked concrete.
Looked at Slash.
Then back at Y/N.
ââŚYou gotta be kidding me.â
Y/N gave a tiny embarrassed wave.
âHey, Raph.â
âHOW?!â
âI got hungry.â
âThat does not explain ANYTHING!â
Slash folded his arms. âYou said not to call your brothers.â
âI KNOW WHAT I SAID!â
Another crack echoed through the tunnel.
Raph looked up nervously.
ââŚOkay, yeah, no, secretâs over.â
â
Twenty minutes later the others arrived.
And somehow it got worse.
âOkay!â Leo announced, climbing off the Shellraiser with confidence. âWe came prepared.â
Donnie jumped out after him carrying an alarming amount of equipment.
Mikey hopped out holdingâ
ââŚIs that butter?â Raph asked.
âEight sticks,â Mikey said proudly.
ââŚWhy?â
âI dunno. People grease up pigs sometimes.â
âThat is NOT the same thing!â
Y/N buried his face in his claws.
âIâm gonna live here forever.â
âAww, donât say that, big guy,â Mikey said sympathetically. âWeâll get you unstuck.â
He paused.
ââŚProbably.â
âEncouraging,â Y/N muttered.
Donnie immediately entered full science mode, scanning the tunnel walls with a handheld device.
âInteresting. Structural integrity is declining at approximatelyââ
The ceiling dropped dust directly onto his head.
ââŚrapidly declining.â
âGreat,â Raph groaned.
Leo crouched near Y/Nâs side, inspecting the situation carefully.
âHow did this even happen?â
Y/N looked ashamed.
âThere was a pizza truck.â
ââŚA whole truck?â
âIt smelled really good.â
Mikey gasped softly. âHonestly? Respect.â
âNot helping,â Raph snapped.
Slash crossed his arms. âWe tried pulling him out already.â
âForward or backward?â Donnie asked.
ââŚBoth.â
âAnd?â
âLots of screaming.â
Y/N pointed weakly. âMostly me.â
Donnie adjusted his goggles.
âHm. The issue isnât just width. His dorsal spines are locking against the concrete edges whenever he moves.â
âTranslation?â Mikey asked.
âHeâs too pointy.â
âOhhh.â
Donnie grinned suddenly.
âI have a plan.â
Raph immediately looked suspicious.
âThat sentence has never ended well.â
â
Ten minutes later.
âAbsolutely not,â Y/N said.
âYou wanna stay stuck forever?â Donnie asked.
ââŚNo.â
âThen trust me.â
The Shellraiser had been backed halfway into the tunnel. Attached to its rear winch was an elaborate pulley system Donnie had assembled with terrifying speed.
Leo held the blueprint.
Mikey held butter for some reason.
Raph stood nearby ready to catch falling debris.
Slash looked deeply regretful about every life choice that led here.
âOkay,â Donnie said, pointing. âStep one: Mikey applies lubrication.â
âYES!â
Mikey sprinted forward with horrifying enthusiasm.
âThis is the weirdest day of my life,â Y/N whispered as butter got smeared along his scales.
âTrust me,â Leo replied. âThis doesnât even crack top ten for us.â
âDone!â Mikey announced proudly.
âYou used ALL the butter?!â Raph yelled.
âHeâs a large dude!â
Donnie ignored them and secured the winch cable carefully around Y/Nâs torso.
âNow, on my mark, the Shellraiser pulls while Y/N exhales and rotates clockwise.â
Y/N blinked.
ââŚWhat?â
âTwist your hips.â
ââŚOh.â
Raph snorted loudly.
âShut up,â Y/N muttered.
âEverybody ready?â Leo called.
The group nodded.
Donnie raised a finger dramatically.
âThreeâŚâ
The winch motor whirred.
âTwoâŚâ
Concrete cracked.
âOne!â
The cable tightened violently.
Y/N twisted.
The tunnel SHRIEKED.
And suddenlyâ
FWOOOOOMP.
Y/N shot free like a champagne cork.
Unfortunately physics immediately betrayed everyone involved.
The giant mutant lizard slid completely across the buttered tunnel floor and slammed directly into Raph.
âWHOAââ
CRASH.
Both of them smashed through a stack of old crates.
Dust exploded everywhere.
Silence.
Then Mikey burst into hysterical laughter.
âOh my goshââ
Raph shoved a crate off himself angrily.
âI HATE ALL OF YOU.â
Y/N lifted his head from the wreckage, dazed.
ââŚAm I free?â
âYou are never allowed near narrow hallways again,â Slash said immediately.
Leo walked over, trying very hard not to laugh.
âYou okay?â
Y/N looked sheepish.
ââŚI think I pulled something.â
Donnie adjusted his goggles smugly.
âBut you are unstuck.â
ââŚYeah.â
Another pause.
Then Y/Nâs stomach growled loud enough to echo through the tunnel.
Everyone stared at him.
Y/N smiled nervously.
ââŚSo, uh⌠anybody else smell tacos?â
Raph pointed aggressively.
âNO MORE FOOD TRUCKS.â
Mikey was already climbing back into the Shellraiser.
âToo late, I know a place open all night!â
Y/Nâs tail wagged hard enough to knock over a traffic cone.
Slash groaned.
âWeâre never financially recovering from this.â
