Saskatoon | A City on the Edge...

There are just over six weeks to go until the 2013 TMAC Conference and AGM in Saskatoon, and we are looking forward to sharing our city with all you wonderful TMAC’ers.

Old Man Winter loves Saskatoon so much, he arrived in October and stayed until April! And he brought a lot of snow. Enough snow to potentially affect our On the Edge of Nature canoe experience. Due to the large amount of snowfall this past winter, the Meewasin Valley Authority is anticipating higher than usual water levels which will increase the speed of the current and make the river dangerous for recreation users. Darn it.

But fear not – we have a backup plan!

On the Edge of Nature Plan B: Embrace the natural beauty of the landscape with an interpretive trail walk at Beaver Creek Conservation Area. Try your hand at feeding the chickadees, and learn more about the natural habitat along our creek and river valley. Settle down for a picnic lunch.

The water levels will also affect plans to dock the Prairie Lily riverboat at the Delta Bessborough Hotel during the On the Edge of History experience. The boat will instead return to its docks by the Mendel Art Gallery and the tour group will take a shuttle to the Bessborough.

Full disclosure: Saskatchewan’s weather is as unpredictable as it gets. If you are registered for one of our outdoor experiences, please ensure you dress appropriately and wear comfortable footwear.

Canada's top chef is coming home. Dale MacKay, the first winner of Top Chef Canada, is moving back to Saskatoon from Vancouver to open a new restaurant. MacKay plans to open a bistro downtown, on Eighth Street East or in Stonebridge.

Saskatoon is the place to be in 2013. Of course, we say that every year. And we mean it every year. But seriously, you will want to visit us this year.

Saskatoon will welcome sports fans of all preferences in 2013 – from rabid hockey fans to wacky extreme sport lovers. Hungry music fans will have no shortage of events to satisfy their appetites, with many festivals and venues throughout the city offering a steady calendar of concerts. And that’s not all we have to offer in the coming year.

Make the most of the cold weather at the 5th Annual Wintershines Festival! Featuring ice sculptures, an ice slide, a soup cook-off and more! (January 26 - February 11, 2013)

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies host the 2013 PostashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op. The best in men’s university hockey from across the country will face off in Saskatoon for CIS hockey’s highest honour. (March 14 - 17, 2013)

The Saskatoon Blades host the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup. The best junior hockey teams from across the country and northern United States battle for the CHL’s top prize. (May 16 - 26, 2013)

The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival features hundreds of world class artists, attracting more than 80,000 music fans to the banks of the South Saskatchewan River every summer. (June 21 - 30, 2013)

WakeRide professional extreme sport and music festival. (July 5 - 7, 2013)

November highlight   

Did you know...

Yann Martel, award-winning author of Life of Pi, came to Saskatoon in the fall of 2003 to be the writer-in-residence at the Saskatoon Public Library. He never left.

This month, Martel's breakthrough novel find its way to the big screen, eleven years after the book was first published. The film version of Life of Pi was directed by Ang Lee, who also directed Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Life of Pi made its way to theatres November 21.
