Brilliant storytelling that brings to light both the normalcy and complexity of an interracial relationship. Germaine the ceramist, also known as the “clay pot maker” and Martin O’Malley, the not so South African South African with an Irish last name carry us through this thrilling story of love and loss.

A traveler’s dream book to get lost in. We follow the lives of the couple as they begin their lives together in the heart of London, welcome a baby boy named Zuko and head for the rainbow nation in the wake of a new democracy. Their lives in the Mother City, Cape Town, is characterised by new beginnings, self-discovery and a touch of drama all thanks to old and new friends. Their nomadic spirits spur up again, calling for them to look towards the Economic Hub of South Africa, Jozi. This is where tragedy hits them, as they find themselves losing the one most important person in their lives.

Personal Note-

This story challenges views that were taught to me from a young age. Topics of race, child abuse, politics and capitalism are artistically broken down as the story unfolds. Different perspectives are emphasised and drive self-introspection regarding my own personal views on the above mentioned topics.    

I am privileged to have read this story and will read it again more informed and liberated.
