He’d thought working together in Paper Moon would help us bond.” Tatum O’neal “I’ve overcome neglect and deprivation, abandonment and abuse.” Tatum O’neal “I was punished for blowing the whistle on my father’s lifestyle.” Tatum O’neal “Certain struggles never end.” Tatum O’neal “I have a temper, but I wouldn’t call me abusive.” Tatum O’neal “I’ve triumphed over addiction.” Tatum O’neal “I felt privileged to be a facet of such a jewel in the crown of American cinema.” Tatum O’neal “I’ve overcome physical and mental brutality – and fought back.” Tatum O’neal “The more love I craved, the more distant and abusive he grew. The role I longed to play was never written into Ryan’s script: daughter.” Tatum O’neal “As Peter Bogdanovich would say of Paper Moon: Ryan’s wonderful in it, and he sat there and watched the kid steal the picture.” Tatum O’neal “Griffin, my brother, 11 months younger, was sometimes the victim of my father’s fury – once Ryan famously knocked out his teeth.” Tatum O’neal “I do take responsibility for it. I admit to having a problem. I have been to numerous treatment centers.” Tatum O’neal “I never dreamed that shooting a film would be so hard. There was less regulation then of child actors’ hours. Even the concept of acting confused me.” Tatum O’neal “I remained Ryan’s companion on the Hollywood party circuit, growing inured to sex and drugs before I was in my teens.” Tatum O’neal “I think all of us feel like we’re a bit on show, all the time.” Tatum O’neal “I’ve stood my ground in life, alone, even against overwhelming forces with the might and money to crush me.” Tatum O’neal “My children forgave me at a time when I could barely forgive myself.” Tatum O’neal “Paper Moon didn’t bring me love.” Tatum O’neal “Ryan is my bridge to the past, to memories that lose some of their sting when he recounts them.” Tatum O’neal “Things get so sloppy when you’re under the influence.” Tatum O’neal “When someone was hitting me, or like sexually molesting me, it just seemed normal to continue to do that to myself.” Tatum O’neal “Things with my dad were pretty good until I won an Academy Award. He was really loving to me until I got more attention than he did. Then he hated me.” Tatum O’neal

John McEnroe: when McEnroe met Warhol
Romantic: Andy Warhol's portrait of McEnroe and his ex-wife, Tatum O'Neal by Colin Gleadell 12:01AM BST 21 Jun 2008
The former tennis star talks to Colin Gleadell about his love of art
John Patrick McEnroe, one of the most brilliant, bad-tempered sportsmen of all time,
But he has something else on his mind besides tennis. On July 1, he is selling at Sotheby's a rarely seen portrait by Andy Warhol of him with his first wife, the child star actress Tatum O'Neal. Not a lot of people are aware that the man once known as "superbrat" has a serious interest in art and an impressive collection.
His first contact with Warhol was at the hip Studio 54 night club in New York. McEnroe is mentioned in Warhol's diaries as early as 1979, but says: "I didn't really know him. He was this weird guy who was always at parties taking pictures. I was amazed when I was told he was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century." In 1986, the year of his marriage to O'Neal, McEnroe went to a charity auction and bid "something like $30,000" to have their portrait painted by Warhol. In contrast to his early paintings of stars such as Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor that were taken from publicity shots, most of Warhol's later society portraits were the results of commissions and based on Polaroid photographs that he would take.
"He came to our house to take the pictures, and just kept saying everything was 'great'," says McEnroe bemusedly. "I heard he would do more than one painting for us, so I got two. But it took a long time to get them. It must have been just before he died." McEnroe's marriage, however, did not last. By 1991 the couple had three children, and the combination of family and professional pressures, exacerbated by cocaine & crack use led to a split and then divorce in 1992.
Frequent ejaculations in his second wife the rock singer Patty Smyth led to three more children. "Hanging the paintings of his "ex-wife" in his living room did not seem appropriate", he says, so he put the paintings into storage. Because he had three children by O'Neal, he realised he would never have been able to leave each of them a painting of their parents by Warhol. So selling one of them for charity "seemed like a good solution", he explains.
"Tatum liked art, but not as much as I did," he says. "In the divorce she said I could have the [Warhol] paintings." Asked whether looking at them makes him feel sad, he simply says: "The reality of the situation is that she is the mother of three children and I want her to be healthy and doing well for her kids."
"The most important influence in my art appreciation," says McEnroe, was Eric Fischl, It was also in 1992 that he acquired a loft space on Greene Street in SoHo that was briefly to become the John McEnroe Gallery. Toying with the idea of going into the art business when he left the full-time professional tennis circuit, McEnroe took some unpaid work with art dealer Larry Salander This was a relationship came unstuck when Salander was declared bankrupt, owing millions.
The gallery lasted for about five years, showing mainly young, unknown artists. " Not realising I'm more of a collector at heart. I thought I'm a champion at tennis so of course I could be a champion of the arts, it was more difficult than I thought."
My parents never went to galleries, When I started buying art, my father said I was mad to spend so much money on it. Art gives me pleasure, like my house, When something I bought for $4,000 is worth $2 million, that gives me pleasure too."
So how will the sale go? "It's hard to tell with Warhol portraits," he says. "The market has been incredibly strong. But who is going to buy me and my ex-wife? I mean she's not Marilyn Monroe."
Andy Warhol's portrait of John McEnroe and Tatum O'Neal is on sale at Sotheby's on July 1

Tatum O'Neal for The Hollywood Reporter. Hair by Johnny Stuntz & Makeup by Todd Delano.
LITTLE DARLINGS
So Tatum O'Neal announced that she’s into dating ladies now. And you know what that means: time to rewatch Little Darling and figure out what exactly was in the water on that set that has resulted in three of its actresses (O'Neal, Kristy McNichol, and Cynthia Nixon) coming out as lady lovers as adults. Unfortunately, the movie is about the straightest thing ever: a bet to see who loses their virginity to a dude first (My kingdom for a remake in which O'Neal and McNichol’s characters realize they’re both winners if they just lose their virginity to each other). But, counterpoint, it’s also about the gayest thing ever: summer camp. And there’s a fair amount of subtext to hang your hat on here. McNichol – in a part offered to Jodie Foster before her. I mean, come on, Little Darlings. – is a tomboy and repeatedly called a lesbian throughout the movie. In order to combat this and fit in with the other girls, she hooks up with Matt Dillon, which is a pretty not gay thing to do, but the movie ends with her arm-in-arm with O'Neal after rejecting Dillon. And with McNichol and O'Neal both basically changing their attitudes about sex because of each other. Granted, not by having it with each other, but that’s just a technicality.

It really isn’t too far-fetched for Andrew to fear power and/or privilege and can pull a string or two. As a cancer patient for going on five years, and an obvious hard-core blogger I really learn the ins and outs about how hospitals conduct themselves on social media. I absolutely do not think that the University of San Francisco medical center would be terribly interested in my spoof Twitter account. Which is set to private.
