Is the Catholic Church catching the eye of Gen Z with the power of the image?
"There are few better routes to sublimity than art combined with faith. The Catholic Church, untroubled by the Second Commandment, realised long ago the power of the eye to open the soul. The day after I left Rome, Charles III—Supreme Governor of the Church of England—arrived to pray with the Pope in the Sistine Chapel, an unprecedented moment in post-Reformation history. I suspect it was no accident that this meeting took place in probably the most visually intensive religious space in Western Europe. Perhaps the King and Gen Z are in spiritual alignment."

„The original Roman calendar had 10 months, starting with March and ending with December. What we now call January and February were an unnamed expanse of dark days, useless to the agricultural and military concerns of the state, which would recommence when the weather improved. Welcome, then, to the in-between, the gap, the once-nameless winter days when society was off the clock.
It’s seductive to imagine we might for these several weeks retreat to our hibernacula, as the Roman soldiers called their winter quarters, to focus on our versions of spinning wool and grooming horses until spring arrives. What would you stock your hibernaculum with? I’m thinking lots of sweaters and soup.“
Thankful The way my toddler says potstickers. Did scary things. Didn’t die. Encouraging. My backyard garden that feeds us. The cold side of the pillow. We celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary. I’m grateful for being fired. * The joy of a wedding dance. New beginnings and a playful Chihuahua. The crow that brings me rubbish. A July day at Wrigley Field. My little orange cat, Cinnamon. America’s compassion finding its voice. * Only momentarily a widow. Defibrillators rock! Sun on snow, white diamonds glistening. First house, fresh paint. Goodbye, gray! Family, sobriety, heavy metal, Cheddar cheese. Sun rising. Moon setting. Another day. It won’t always be like this. * A man I melt into nightly. I’m grateful for Spam. Comfort food. Hummingbirds. Photocorynus. Clouds. Pula. Haiku. Sprites. Sunny deck, soaring birds, hot coffee. Love, enough money, health, moist turkey. My one wild and precious life.

The Native American State That Never Was.
Every November, we honor Native American Heritage Month by celebrating the knowledge, resilience, and creativity of Native communities. Featured here is a 1932 print by Awa Tsireh (San Ildefonso Pueblo), whose paintings helped shape the Pueblo art movement of the 20th century. A JSTOR Daily roundup explores topics like Native foodways, the roots of U.S. democracy in Indigenous governance, and how educators are rethinking how Native history is taught. Read the full roundup.

so scheide nicht von mir;
wenn ich den Tod soll leiden,
so tritt Du dann herfür;
wenn mir, am allerbängsten
wird um das Herze sein,
so reiß mich aus den Ängsten
Kraft Deiner Angst und Pein.
Erscheine mir zum Schilde,
zum Trost in meinem Tod
und lass mich sehn Dein Bilde
in Deiner Kreuzesnot.
Da will ich nach Dir blicken,
da will ich glaubensvoll
Dich fest an mein Herz drücken.
Wer so stirbt, der stirbt wohl.
