"I.. I think I would like some company.. We haven't been able to hang out in a while, anyway.. I-" He pauses for a moment to think about his words, lips pulling into a thin line before a few rough coughs are given.

optimus tries not to let his excitement show through in his next comm ;   ..::  really?     okay,  great——!     i'll head up there,  give me a few kliks.  ::..     a pause,  then——     ..::  i missed you,  too,  bee.     i'm ... i'm sorry i've been so quiet.     things have been hard,  what with adjusting to all that megatron's been teaching me about running the ship.     but i'll be up shortly,  okay?  ::..

he quietly exits his hab with a spring in his step,  his spark feeling lighter than it had earlier in the day.     optimus hasn't particularly minded the presence of the flowers,  since his have only just started becoming noticeable  —  but he is a little concerned about how bumblebee had sounded over the commlink ... & that won't do in the presence of optimus prime.

"  ... huh?  "

optimus is stopped short by how ... alarmed megatron's field feels,  canting his helm as his brows furrow over his bright optics.     his  filters?     it's  just  a  cough,  why is his old friend suddenly acting like that?

"  since when is my maintenance  your  business?     last i looked,  we were  no longer on speaking terms  about intimate things like that.  "     he counters,  completely aware of how  petty  he's acting & that it's absolutely unbecoming of a prime.     he coughs again.     behind the battlemask he's grimacing as something pokes into  —  or out of  —  one of the scars on his left cheek,  & the taste of energon rises in his intake ... along with something  sharp.     of course he can't open the mask in front of megatron,  not even to spit the thing out,  so he just tries to swallow it back down.

optimus scoffs,  the sound coming out more like a wheeze until he clears his throat & resets his vox.     "  explain  myself?     i didn't know i had to do that for being  kind,  "     the prime retorts,  albeit halfsparkedly,  as he folds his arms across his chest.     "  aren't you tired of hiding out in that derelict ship?     you deserve  homes,  even if they aren't in iacon ... somewhere safe,  near enough that we can come to your aid if the quints attack.  "

a cough is hidden in one servo,  then he clears his throat again  —  & without warning,  a new flower blossoms out of one of his exhaust stacks.     optimus pays it no mind,  or rather  doesn't  seem  to  notice  it.

Recent reports have come back with images of new structures --small, basic outposts and bunkers -- appearing on the surface near the entrance to Iacon. They're clearly Iaconian-make, not Quintesson, but new ones crop up every couple of weeks, spreading further and further out from the underground city. It's a clear encroachment on what Megatron has deemed his; Optimus has claimed the underworld, and so the surface by default belongs to Megatron.

on the contrary,  it's an attempt to  help ;   optimus doesn't like that the high guard has to shelter in whatever they can find,  even if a settlement makes a fabulous target for quintessons.     but he understands megatron's ire & knows that the only way to get him to see reason,  if at all possible,  is for him to go out & confront him about it himself.     naturally it's not something that anyone else advises even on a good day,  but with this  mysterious  disease  that's going around ...

"  i'm  going.     he won't hurt me,  i  promise.  "

a naive idea,  but ... he has to believe it.     & so optimus hauls his bulk up onto the surface,  coughing as he moves along the crevice that yawns open to reveal iacon.     a silvery flower blooms in one of his cheek vents,  unnoticed.     he's sure that megatron is there,  so he squares his shoulders & tries to seem unbothered as he walks through the collection of buildings & out onto the dusty plains.
