I’m struggling a bit. How do you go about drawing Ottas? I’ve always struggled with drawing in general, I think it’s guidelines I have trouble with
Thank you for asking, I'm happy to give some tips!
I'll hopefully be able to make a full drawing tutorial in the future, but, in the meantime, here's some tips and a quick process video of me creating some otta sketch pages that can hopefully help you visualize how I construct them!
First, some tips:
The first thing I recommend is to break the otta down into simple shapes. Using circles, rectangles, triangles, and other shapes to build up the structure is a great way to simplify complex anatomy.
Here's some examples of that using an otta model I made a while back:
See how I used simple shapes to break down sections of the otta's body? If you use these same shapes to start your drawing, it's easier to build up the form and get a handle on the proportions before smoothing everything out and adding details. You can even break the above shapes down even further and turn things like the head, shoulders, thighs, etc. into circles and ovals (you'll see me do some of that in the below video).
The second thing I recommend is to study and draw the animals the ottas were inspired by! If you draw these animals and break their anatomy down into simple shapes too, it will be easier to piece the ottas together. I've included a bunch of reference images below the cut at the bottom of the post to help with this.
Second, a time lapse:
Here's a video of me working on some rough otta sketch pages. In a couple places I show how to draw the simple shapes and then build the form around them. You'll also see me starting with otta "stick figures" that mimic skeletal structure. It's super high-flying, but I hope it can help you visualize the process!
I hope this helps! <3
Bonus:
Collection of references images under the cut!
Here's some references for animals to study!
For the face:
River otters, seals, baby hippos (more for muzzle and nostril shape)
For the neck, body and legs:
Capybaras, tapir, greyhounds (more so for body length)

Api is the youngest(besides Chek). He’s a sharp shooter and does not like hand-to-hand combat for a good reason. I intended to make him autistic, and I used my own experience and applied it to him. The speed, noise, and pain that comes with combat overstimulates and overwhelms him, and the clan understands that so that’s why he’s a sniper. They also have a BD droid companion! His armor is green and grey.

Mai is the second youngest of the Loc family. Applause by Lady Gaga fits her really really well. She loooves making a show of her fighting skills. Piss her off, you’ll get to see all of her weapons in the span of a minute. Her armor is red and grey with a good bit of weathering. Red for honoring a parent, grey for mourning. She was about 12-13 years old when Deca was killed. Losing her mother left a big hole in her life, causing Mai to have trouble processing her emotions and become upset if she feels like she can’t help or do anything to fix a situation.

Today we're spotlighting a resource that is incredible for anyone interested in Mandalorians:
MandoCreator
All the armor designs in this picture were made on MandoCreator.com. It has a very well-developed and extremely customizable kit-building app that has literally millions of possible combinations without taking into consideration any images or decals you upload yourself. There's also a gallery where you can browse others' creations for inspiration.
Recently MandoCreator expanded from armor design to language. It has a Mando'a-English dictionary that you can create flashcard decks from on the fly.
You can also learn to write and read Mandalorian scripts, both by drawing the characters and by transcribing original Mando'a works. Or, if you're in a hurry, it also has a transcription function.
And for the cherry on top: there is Mando'a Wordle-- Mando'ardle if you will! Same rules as regular Wordle, but only using Mando'a words. (Don't worry, this screenshot is from 12 April)
MandoCreator is still actively in development. Keep tuned to their media pages for the latest updates!
