I dont think that gameverse Giovanni was a particularly great father, but I dont think he was as cruel or abusive as he's thought to be in fanon.

It's important to remember that Silver became upset with Giovanni because his loss to a child shattered the illusion of him being the strongest trainer. It seems to me that Giovanni has some sort of insecurity about his individual strength (his dialogue in masters points to this too) and from there raised Silver to not only believe that strength is the most important asset one can have, but also to look up to him as a role model in that regard.

Of course Silver's going to resent his father for lying about his strength!

And it obviously wasn't right for Giovanni to let Silver leave like that (Silver actually runs off before he himself can), nor was his ideology a good one to instil in a child, but I dont think Silver would have reacted the way he did if he was being abused.

It's funny when people see Team Rocket as a mafia while seeing the Rust Syndicate as a Yakuza...becuase in the original Japanese games, Team Rocket was 100% modeled after a Yakuza. Giovanni only has an Italian name in the English translation because everyone was still doing that whole "give all the Japanese characters western names" thing. Team Rocket's uniforms are even modeled after Bōsōzoku uniforms. Great video on the sibject, here.

So basically...

(Also, Yakuza and Mafia operate very differently. They're two very different crime organizations)
