River told the Doctor less than half of her escapades. âI swear it.â
âThe Doctor said he couldnât take me out on Wednesday because he was looking into something down here. And he told me to stay away, but...â She shrugged. As though the Doctor thought that was going to work!
"Miss Oswald? I need to talk to you..."
âEverythinâ okay?â

Chester sighed - ah, the old question of âif you blank it so much why not blankâ, apart from having to explain his basic DNA to her.
âFor one thing, Iâd have to jump on a cargo ship or stowaway on a plane.â Only then did he think of his teleporting friend - god, Ches, why didnât you think of that! âSecondly, a mutant is someone who ⌠well âŚâ He waved about the room. âWhat I just did. In other words I have special powers.â
âIt was pretty awesome, if you donât mind me saying.â Perhaps he would mind. Clara paused in brief regret for the comment before continuing quickly. âI could always... Give you a lift. If you want. Iâm sure my friend wonât mind.âÂ
Perhaps it was rather soon for such a suggestion. But it was rather soon for her to have become so fond of the man, yet here she was. It was an offer she felt she had to make - particularly when the TARDIS made it so easy.
âWhy would anyone do that?â The question escaped her far too quickly, for a certain horror took her. Sheâd seen people do some awful things in her travels, humans no exception, but her whole kind? Her lips formed a deep frown as she took a few steps towards him. âSorry, Iâm⌠from out of town, I suppose, but that⌠that would never be something Iâd do.â
He never did turn round to face her as he spoke. âIâm a mutant, alright? Anyone whoâs not a mutant wants us either locked away or dead.â
âWell, weâre both English,â he sighed. âIâm sure things are better there than here in America.â He paused as he leaned against the wall. âI do miss home, though.â His emotion towards her changed as she was the second human that he was feeling safe round.
Upon Claraâs travels, she had found herself asking far too many awkward questions. She was aware that it was not a rare occourance for her to embarass herself,  and had simply learnt to deal with it as opposed to shying away. There was no exception this time. âSorry,  I am really outof town, I should know this,  but whaâ do you mean by a mutant?â She asked him with a genuine look of interest.Â
âAhh, if there's one thing to be said about us we definitely handle things better than America.â A bright chuckle escaped the young woman in an attempt to calm him. âI know where you're coming from there. If you miss it so much, why not head back home?â

[I'm so sorry for being absent for a couple of days guys but I was in London and I had the best time and I saw the greatest actor of all the actors and then I met the greatest actor of all the actors and I still can't calm down.]Â

River waved awkwardly. Who else would be in a sewer alone? No one but her husband actually. That made three people willing to go sewer tracking alone.
âThatâs a terrible reply, and Iâm still waiting for an answer.â
With a sigh, Clara looked almost defeated. âYou promise you wonât tell the Doctor if I tell you?â
âSOMEONE said theyâd take me on my summer holidays, and SOMEONEÂ âasnât turned up.â

âWhat do you want from me?â
âSorry! I was just... bit lost. There was a park, I think. Do you know the way back?â

âClara Oswald? What the hell are you doing in a sewer by yourself?â As far as River knew, it wasnât Wednesday.â
âProfessor Song!â Surprise took Clara, a fact evident in her expression. She certainly hadn't expected to bump into anyone, let alone someone she knew very well. âThat is a very good question...â

He kept to himself, the alcohol level affecting his mind made him distant; he gave a confused look, one corner of his nostril faintly lifted up. Sheâs offering you consolation, being nice to you, why are you acting like sheâs said something wrong?âIâm not one for introductions, âspecially from someone whoâs own kind is set to tagged and number us like weâre livestock.â He turned on his heels, staggering to one part of the room to look out the window. âNot to mention sometimes gunning us down like weâre nothing.â

At her words, Chester felt a weight gradually lifting off his chest; everything calmed down, only leaving him to rush her and embrace the stranger while he sobbed. âItâs hard ⌠itâs so ⌠hard ⌠he-he sh-shouldnât have âŚâ Chester chouldnât finish his sentence as he poured himself onto her.
There was little time for surprise. Her arms quickly enveloped him to her in something she hoped was comforting. It was close for two strangers, too, but travelling often threw Clara together with people she had never met. And the need to solace him was quite severe.
âGrief is a right bastard, eh?â It was a poor attempt at humour, and the weak chuckle which attempted to force itself out was swallowed down. ââŚIâm sorry, youâre probably sick of hearing things like this, I know, but no parent wants to see their kid like this, whatever happens. Iâm sure your Dad doesnât.â
No, no he wouldnât. Heâd probably give Chesterâs shoulder a pat, telling him to cheer up tomorrow is another day.
He let go of her, sniffling and chuckle shortly at her poor attempted joke, but it was a good attempted one. âYeah, yeah it is.â He sniffled again, averting his eyes to a corner before they traveled to the floor. Chester really did wish his dad wouldnât have been gunned down.
He tried to remember the specifics of what happened. All he knew was scary men in uniforms were shouting at his dad and that guns were drawn and he was killed - which circled right back round to his hatred for humans.
âFucking humans,â he muttered under his breath as he started to calm down a bit.
It was quite heartening to see him settle a little. Relief flooded Clara, without affecting the gentle, sad smile which remained on her lips - the careful result of attempted comfort. "I'm sorry to hear about your Dad." She knew little (or to be precise, nothing) of what had happened. Of course she didn't. But it had upset him greatly. Of course she was sorry to hear.
"I'm Clara, by the way." It was an attempt at brightening the mood. She wasn't too enthusiastic, at all, but a hand offered itself out to him. "I know introductions usually come before the hugs, but eh. Where's the fun in being usual?"

Calm down, Ches, youâre okay youâre okay sheâs not doing anything to harm you âŚÂ
His breathing was irregular, hyperventilating as anxiety took hold with a force strong against his own thoughts of calming down. Chesterâs frame shook, hands clenching and grasping at the sides of his head; the aura of the room grew intense - going into dangerous territory as a few things started to crumble to dust.
You piece of shit, she knows what you are sheâll report you then youâll get whatâs cominâ to ya, why donât you just end her? Unleash your power on her, choke her out, crumble her to dust.Â
No no ⌠no youâre okay just breathe and calm yourself just look at her, see? Sheâs fine.Â
Chester glanced up at her - torment written in his bloodshot eyes from the tears, though there was a small cry for help just begging to leap out of his mouth.
It was not fear which took hold of Clara, but kindness. Questions could come later, proper introductions and the like. They weren't needed. Her concern for the man pushed empathy to the front of her mind, and she offered him an expression of warmth and understanding.
She couldn't offer him much. But she could offer him that.
"I lost my Mum." The quiet statement was given with another single, careful step forward. She covered little ground with it, just in case. "I... I won't bore you with that, but I know what it's like to lose a parent. I'll understand if you need to... Talk, or cry, or..." A glance around the room finished her sentence for her.

âYou could help yourself by not taking another step forward,â he snapped. His emotions were running high due to the extreme levels of alcohol he had consumed during the night; Chester felt another wave of tears come, he burst out sobbing. All around him objects were starting to float, the air round them swirled as the floor started to shake.
âWell, I... I wonât do that. Donât worry.â A certain surprise took Clara at the sudden change in their surroundings. But sheâd seen far stranger things in her time, and it didn't seem the appropriate time to question the man. He seems far too distressed.Â
He flinched as he saw her step towards him. âDonât ⌠come near me âŚâ His anger for what had happened to his father mixed with his sorrow was not a good combination for someone to be in the same room with him.
âIt's okay.â She froze quickly. Claraâs instinct reaction was to comfort the man, whatever way that maybe. She didn't want to upset him any more, certainly, but nor did she want to leave the stranger without some attempt at kindness. The smile she offered him was gentle, genuine. âI just wanted to know if I could help.âÂ
