The power has gone out, and itâs freezing. The brothers help you keep warm.
Itâs been storming for the past few days.
Not a thunderstorm, thankfully, but a winter storm. Not as loud aside from the wind, but those, of course, come with their own problems.
Itâs been freezing outside. Your shared home has thankfully been kept very warm and comfortable. This only works, however, if the heating system is operational.
You donât notice it at first, being asleep and all, but the power has just gone out. All of the appliances have shut off, meaning the heater has as well. Your room had been comfortably warm up to this point, but as youâre sleeping soundly in bed, over the next hour or so, the heat dissipates. The cold begins to seep in, and though the blankets youâre nestled under ward it off for a while, ultimately the room becomes cold enough to wake you up.
You open your eyes, feeling the cold beginning to seep through the covers, and immediately begin shivering. Huddling up under your blanket, you reach an arm out from beneath to turn your bedside lamp on, only to discover that it doesnât work. You quickly piece together what happened, and try to conserve as much warmth as you can, thinking you might need to pay Drew or Erik another visit to keep warm through the night.
You wouldnât have to make that decision to face the cold and make the trek upstairs, however. You hear the sounds of footsteps coming down the stairs, approaching your room, and then you hear a gentle knock at the door, followed by a soft voice.
âAre you awake?â
âY-y-yeah,â you stutter, your body lightly shaking as the cold begins to overwhelm you.
âOh, good! Can we come in?â
âM-mhm!â
You peek out from under the covers to see the huge shadowy shapes of Drew and Erik entering your room, both of them carrying blankets. Drew sets his blankets down before leaving the room, and you watch Erik begin to lay them out across the floor. Itâs not long before Drew returns with more blankets, setting them down before leaving one last time. After returning with pillows, youâre starting to get an idea of whatâs going on. They continue to work on their makeshift bed in the other corner of your room, testing the thickness of the blankets before nodding at each other.
Youâre trembling in your bed at this point as the cold nips at you, but itâs not long before you watch Drew lay himself down on the bed. Before you can say anything, Erik approaches your bed, reaching his arms down to first pull your blanket away. When you protest, he speaks up with a gentle, reassuring tone.
âItâs okay, youâll have it back soon, I promise.â
You nod shakily, immediately rubbing your arms as youâre now fully exposed to the cold. You watch Erik fold and drape your blanket over his shoulder before reaching down to gently scoop you up with your pillow. Instantly, youâre already feeling warmer in his arms, clinging tightly to his shirt and burying yourself against him to greedily soak in the heat. Erik chuckles as he stands back up, carrying you with him over to the bed, where Drew has already made himself comfortable.
You watch him yawn, feeling slightly guilty about this being so much of a problem, but he watches his brother approach and offers you a warm smile. You smile back, happy to see him too. He speaks up as Erik closes in, watching his brother carefully kneel down with you, cradling you like something infinitely precious in his arms.
âWe donât know how long the powerâs gonna be out, but weâll make sure you stay warm, alright?â
You glance around in the dark as Erik pulls you away from himself. You begin to shiver again until he sets you down on the spread of blankets next to Drew, who immediately pulls you in close to himself with his arms, enveloping you within them to tuck you against his chest. You snuggle yourself against him, shuddering as his warmth begins to surround you. He begins rubbing one of his hands firmly over your back to try and massage some of that much needed warmth directly into you.
Erik then settles himself down as well, and you turn yourself over in Drewâs arms to watch him make himself comfortable on the other side. Everywhere you look now, your view is taken up by both of them entirely, and you feel your face flushing a deep shade of red. Erik smiles softly at you, reaching up to pull your blanket off of his shoulder and lower it down to you. You eagerly take it from his hand, bundling yourself up to conserve the warmth Drew has given you.
âYou nice and warm, now?â Drew asks, and you feel yourself melting under how warm and gentle his tone is, nestling against his chest to feel the comforting vibrations.
You nod your head in response, already feeling much more comfortable thanks to their efforts. You still have yet to see the full extent of their plan, but itâs not much longer before they make it known to you.
Drew pulls you back in against him, tucking you nice and close. Your back is pressed gently, but firmly against his chest as he takes in and releases a content sigh, and something about the way holding you affects them so much has you feeling a warm flutter in your chest. You then watch as Erik scoots himself closer, slowly, carefully, until you find your face making contact with his chest. He gently presses himself against you until your face is firmly, but comfortably nestled against him.
And just like that, youâre snugly sandwiched right between the two mini-giants. Your small body is entirely surrounded, supported, and enveloped by them on all sides, shrouded in darkness and cocooned in warmth.
Now that your position is secure, Erik reaches down to pull a blanket atop the three of you, and Drew makes sure your blanket is properly tucked onto you. The air around you begins to warm, losing the bitter chill it held previously as the heat builds up. Their presence around you is all-encompassing, but they take care to make sure youâre not being squeezed too tightly or suffocated between them. You can still breathe comfortably as they let air filter in beneath the blanket, and it helps keep you from overheating.
âHowâs this? Are you comfortable?â Erik asks, his voice low and soft as they keep you so close between them.
All you can really do at the moment is try and process whatâs happening. You keep your arms tucked in close, feeling overwhelmed, but also very happy with the direction the night has taken. As the question lingers, you snuggle in and take a moment to just listen and feel the two of them. Their breathing, their heartbeats, the way they both make sure youâre properly cuddled up and feeling safe and warm⌠it all slowly begins to make you melt.
Youâre in a state of warm bliss. Being snuggled up between these two giant beings like this has you feeling significant and special, and it is so very evident just how much they care about you. You nod and mumble out a soft âyes,â nuzzling your face against Erikâs shirt in the process, a gesture theyâve grown to understand. They both quietly chuckle in response, and Erik speaks up softly to Drew.
âTold you this would work.â
Drew sighs and holds you a little tighter.
âMhm, you were right. This is nice.â
Erik brings one arm to rest down over you as he quietly chuckles again, his hand resting on your shoulder as his thumb softly strokes you. Itâs that gentle touch he offers that finally finds you completely melting in their hold, taking in a deep breath and letting it out in a heavy, content sigh. You thought being under their sweaters or snuggled up with them in their beds was so incredibly close to them? Not even a competition compared to this.
You find yourself smiling as you settle in, nestling up between the two of them and sighing again. You then hear Drew taking in a deep breath as well, nestling into him again as his chest expands against you briefly. He then slowly exhales with a quiet hum, and if it werenât completely dark beneath the blanket, you know you would be seeing a smile on both of their faces too.
You are wonderfully cozy as you lay here, any memory of being cold overwritten by the immense warmth surrounding you. Despite the two of them doing this to help you conserve warmth specifically, you also feel absolutely protected and hidden away by them. Nothing can touch you right now, if anyone else walked into the room, they would have no idea that youâre tucked away in such a manner.
It doesnât take long for you to feel sleepy again, and you yawn as you focus on Erikâs thumb brushing across you so softly, as well as Drewâs gentle hold on you in his arms. You laugh quietly as you hear Erik yawn in response, followed shortly after by Drew, and both of them chuckle as you yawn again.
âYou get yourself some sleep, short stuff. Weâve got you,â Drew croons softly, the rumble in his chest that youâre pressed so tightly to vibrating through you comfortingly.
âWe wonât let the cold get you, promise,â Erik reassures, and you once more nuzzle your face against his chest in response.
âThank you,â you softly mumble, closing your eyes and taking in one last deep breath. You release it slowly, letting yourself relax in their hold and focusing on what you can hear and feel around you.
Their slow, gentle breathing is a constant reminder that they are two huge, living beings lovingly sharing their warmth with you in the coziest way youâve experienced thus far. You can feel Drewâs heart beating in his chest behind you, and you press your ear to Erikâs chest to listen to his. Both are slow and soothing, and as they too settle in to fall asleep, they almost sync up perfectly. Erik continues to softly stroke you, Drew gives you the gentlest squeeze, and as they offer their comforts to you, you accept them eagerly as they assist you in drifting off.
Though you could have done without the rude awakening from being chilled so much, you still come to the conclusion that this is the safest and happiest you have ever felt with them. You finally slip out of consciousness with a soft smile on your face, thoroughly snuggled up between the brothers and tucked away from the cold.

Please yap about the recent Isabelle and the Lads chapter I canât wait for her to realize how much her leaving them hurt the lads + maybe in the near future she hangs out with them again!
đ¤Šđ¤Šđ¤Š
Yap session under the cut because I am LONG WINDED and I care about the quality of yalls dashboards <3
I'm just so excited about this arc rn!
This last chapter as been rotating in the back of my head for years. Seriously. Just the concept of: I need Isabell to leave and come back to sort her own mental state about this dynamic. Because I keep trying to put her in cute situations, and she keeps derailing me by engaging in the horrors. So, that needed to be sorted, (more on this soon.)
Then, the other thing that I wanted from the chapter was that I wanted Zeke to be... pretty upset about it. Having him do a heartfelt reunion didn't sit well with me. Narratively, it was not the most exciting choice, and the more I've learned about his character over the years... he just wouldn't. Not under these circumstances at least.
So, I wanted to explore how he would process something like this. Because he's ... him. He's developed over the years so I'm not exactly sure if this reads... uh consistently (the problem of taking 10 years to write a story) but my philosophy for his... philosophy... is that: If someone would say something with a sentence, Zeke's going to say it in a word. If someone would say it in a word, Zeke would just give you a look about it.
One thing about him that I just think about all the time is, how his care risks being nearly invisible, just because it looks effortless. With Isabell, he's been doing it since day one, so he can come across as "just like that" ... He isn't. He's choosing to do all that.
Zeke hasn't experienced seeing a tiny before, he doesn't have some built-in understanding of the situation... but he's empathetic, and he's super observant. That's how he loves. He notices. So, he sees Isabell's fear, what makes her uncomfortable, and he accommodates accordingly. He's thinking things through, he's problem solving constantly.
Which I think is why he's so hurt in this chapter and in what's to come. He's spent so much time carefully considering her and her perspective and how things will affect her... trying to become safe or her... that the idea that she didn't see any of that effort (or she did and just didn't care) is pretty challenging for him. He doesn't know how to navigate being hurt with Isabell quite yet.
He doesn't know how to express himself without being overwhelming to her. How can he be mad without her perceiving him as a threat? He doesn't have that trust, so he's just pulling back.
And we'll get into it in the next chapter, but yeah sure he might be being a tiiiiny bit vindictive, because it's like "you left? you want space? fine take your space, have it."
But it's mostly, "I was so scared and you're going to show up on a random Tuesday and pretend nothing happened?? I don't think so."
Zeke is quick, he's sarcastic, he can absolutely cut people with his words... But he will remove himself before he hurts Isabell with any of that. He's just so contained, because he feels he has to be.
I think this whole arc is really going to allow Zeke to stop policing himself so harshly and to be more vibrantly himself. Which just opens the door to a ton of character discoveries I haven't even made yet!!! Like, obviously, he's not an entirely different person, but he's definitely been operating through a consistent level of restraint.
Conversely, Marcus loves fast, he loves big, and he loves LOUD. He wears his emotions right on his face. He's going to act before he thinks, it's just who he is. When Isabell came into the picture, he just didn't really see that he was scary. It wasn't a consideration to him, meanwhile Zeke was only thinking about how scary they must be from her perspective.
To Marcus, he's like "I'm just me." He's not trying to scare her, so why would she be scared? He isn't trying to hurt her, so no one should worry about it. He's a big ole golden retriever and he has good intentions. I love him so much he is literally so fun.
Then the two of them together... These two are my earliest OCs so I have such a soft spot for them if you can't tell
Even though Marcus and Zeke are so opposite, they have the best friendship. I love that Marcus just gets him. He doesn't need to be shown or told what Zeke is thinking, most of the time he just already knows. And if he doesn't know, he'll just straight up ask.
And I think Zeke just genuinely needs that. Because despite all of Zeke's observational prowess, he's pretty shit at navigating like ... ~interpersonal ambiguity.~ So, put him in a situation where someone is obviously upset, but says that nothing's wrong he's like... hm. an unsolvable puzzle.
That's how he approaches things. He tries to fix. He tries to solve, all of the things... with backups, all internally before acting. He is so used to stepping back, that he often forgets that he is like, an active player in the game almost?
Marcus can tell when Zeke is just being quiet, or when Zeke is being quiet... but in an upset way. Marcus just naturally charges in, says the quiet part out loud. Now, Zeke has something to respond to, rather than sorting through a hundred possible hypotheticals.
Who they are individually, works really well for them together. They both know exactly how to push each others buttons, they fill each others blind spots.
I hope that reads throughout the story... I might spend more time thinking about their dynamic than I do writing about it. haha!
Okay, back to Isabell.
Up until now the dynamic with her and the lads has been very... caretaker to patient, right? Even if the lads weren't exactly thinking of it that way, Isabell definitely was. She is there because she has to be. They are tentatively building trust, and Isabell is learning that big can also be safe, and all of that. But, for their relationship to actually progress any further the power dynamic needs to ... chill out.
Yes, there is just inherently going to be a power dynamic at play. But right now, Isabell still sees the lads as other. Like the scale of them has them operating in a space that is well, I mean, frankly a little dehumanizing... but from the opposite perspective?
I think a really common theme is the struggle for for the tiny to be viewed as a person, that their size doesn't invalidate their humanity, right? And that theme is absolutely present here, but I think there is also the element of... well that works both ways.
Until now, she has been viewing the lads as... too big to be affected by her. It's a very self-minded train of thought, but given her background it's totally valid.
But now, we are back on our (literal) own two feet. And I think that realization that they can be hurt and she can be the one to hurt them is going to like... force their dynamic onto a more even playing field.
Then, we can have some actual relationship building, without the baggage of like, "I'm taking care of you because you're helpless." Or, "I am reacting to everything with the main goal of self preservation because you are inherently a threat to me."
And no one is expressly wrong. It's just they're just people. They're taking justified feelings and... makin messes.
Isabell is justified in leaving, she just handled it poorly.
Zeke's hurt is justified he's just handling it poorly.
Marcus... well. He's just chillin. He's fine.
But anyway. They're doin their best and I love them. I think this is the sort of stuff I just really enjoy writing. Characters in situations lmao
So yeah, I think the things on the horizon are going to hurt... but it's going to be important character development. Growing pains if you will.
Give me a story about borrower children disobeying their parents and playing with the humanâs miniatures. The human craftsman noticing and after investigating starting to build toys and playground sets.
They donât try to meet or âcatchâ the children but every day they are excited to see whether their builds have been used or not and to add more details. When theyâre asked about the sudden obsession with crafting playgrounds and toys they shrug and say âI just felt they were necessary to buildâ
At exactly six oâclock that morning, the lights inside the shop flicked on.
Whilst tying the apron that acted as his self-appointed work uniform around himself, the craftsman walked through the curtained doorframe that separated the residential side of the building from the front. His heavy-soled shoes clacked across the hardwood floors as the burly man passed by shelves upon shelves of his beloved creations; ranging from entire houses to individually carved chairs and teacups.
And yet, out of every miniature the man had ever constructed, there was one shelf in that shop that he made sure to check on each and every morning. It was a favorite, per say, though it notably was not his, nor his customers.
Like clockwork, he approached the aforementioned shelf, eyeing the most recent pieces up and down in a mental game of spot the difference. The amount of squinting being done required him to readjust his glasses a few times as they attempted to escape down the bridge of his nose, but it had all been worth it. Because what he seemed to witness so often lately never failed to bring a warm feeling to his chest and bright smile to his face.
On the third shelf up from the bottom, the slide heâd placed down just last week had since been worn down the middle, where its blue color became noticeably lighter. There were also metal scratches around the knotches where the swing setâs chains had been attached, the kind you get from doing just thatâswinging back and forth on it. Other pieces of equipment had been altered in much the same way; items not left in the same place heâd put them, springs worn and ropes run taut.
The leftmost swing set, most of all, appeared to have significantly more wear and tear on it than the others he had attempted to build. Notably, it was the only one suspended by braided twine âropeâ instead of the usual metal chains used for jewelry and the like.
Despite having been involved in this particular craft for over a decade, there were about as many new things to learn as there were objects in the world, thus there was always something the craftsman did not quite know how to make. Playgrounds and toys were undeniably on that list when this whole affair had started some weeks ago, and it had certainly been⌠something of a wake-up call, to put it mildly.
He made a mental note to himself to use more braided twine from now on. Perhaps heâd even try purchasing some colored variations. Kiddos enjoyed colorful things, didnât they? He could only hope the same applied to presumably non-human children as well, as the man wrapped up his investigation with a quick dusting off of his hands still in the quiet hours of the morning, long before the shop had to open.
He already knew today was going to be a slow day. The shop area was small, located along a length of several others all packed together like sardines. Not to mention his craft was certainly not an ordinary one, and so the bulk of purchases he received were typically specialized orders rather than the typical walk-in customer.
Nevertheless, the craftsman had become newly aware that he was hardly ever alone in the shop. Just as well as heâd deduced that this was information which he should not have been privy to. If the way they ran and hid in his presence was any indication. Then again, the man could hardly bring himself to call them âsubtleâ in their attempt to hide their presence from him. Ah, kids.
He was just about to rise to a stand from his admittedly awkward crouch, when all of a sudden, something unfamiliar caught the manâs attention. Obscured underneath one of the bench seats, which was such a tight spot that he genuinely had to go wander in the back for a moment to grab himself a spare pair of tweezers, was a pink ribbon. The sort of thing worn in somebodyâs hair, and yetââgood lord,â he breathedâthe thing was smaller than his thumbnail.
After a second or two, the initial wide-eyed realization had softened into a tender sense of recognition; any remaining tension leaving him through a small, humored sigh. Then, with the same amount of care taken to retrieve it, the craftsman wordlessly placed the lost item on top of the bench it had fallen under, with the hope that whoever it belonged to would have an easier time finding it that way.
It wasnât as though he intended to catch them in the act, or meet these tiny, young, mysterious admirers of his creations. To be completely honest, their enjoyment of his work gave the man about as much joy as he reckoned it made them. What a gift it was to know that this silly hobby-turned-career of his was indeed making someone else happy, and how incredibly lucky he was to have such direct feedback on his work.
In some ways, he had begun feeling like a younger man himself, dreaming up colors and playing around with new ideas in his head. The latest on his mind was the idea of trying to recreate a functioning merry-go-round in miniature, which heâd been thinking about basing off one from his own childhood, like so many of the other playground pieces were. Thing was, the physics required to achieve that level of mobility was, as of yet, entirely out of his wheelhouse.
Fortunately, the craftsman knew just who to call in times like these.
Calloused fingers drummed mindlessly on the glass surface of the front counter, where the apron-adorned figure sat leaned back in a chair his own size with the shop phone hugged up against his ear. With each passing ring, more details stood out in his mind regarding things he might need to add to this current project or tweak in some the older ones according to the âfeedbackâ heâd received last night.
Finally, the line clicked, the voice of a very tired and surely yet-to-be-caffeinated woman chiming in. âMorninâ, Lenny,â she yawned. âThis another question about your seesaws?â
The smell of fresh baked goods had been drifting in from the shop next door for several hours at this point, so he figured she mustâve gotten up even earlier than he had to prepare for morning rush.
He fumbled awkwardly with the phone a moment, the beginnings of a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. âAhâ no, actually, those turned out fine. Thanks again for the assist, by the way.â It was the best he could admit to without openly confessing that his mysterious new customers hadnât been interested in that particular build at all. He tried not to let the disheartened tone in his voice show through before continuing.
âI wanted to ask you about spinners. Have you got a minute?â
There was an audible sigh on the other end, sounding a bit more fond than exhausted. âOf course you do. And yah, I have got, just ask away. Wait, actuallyââ she cut him off before he could speak, her voice lowering and growing hushed, acting as though she were about to breach a potentially sensitive subject.
âWhatâs with the sudden obsession with playground equipment?â She caved. âI mean, Iâve known ya to go through a phase or two, but this is serious if youâre willinâ to listen to me yap about pivots and motion for the better half of an hour.â
âNow hold on,â he chuckled to himself, âI asked for a minute, not an hour. But yes, I suppose IâŚâ the craftsman found himself trailing off, his thoughts drifting to the lost ribbon he had held so briefly in his hand. âI just felt they were necessary to build,â he answered after a pause, shrugging his shoulders casually before realizing the other person couldnât see him.
This, apparently, was not as satisfying a response as the baker was hoping for. He could practically hear her pinching her forehead together through the speaker. âWhatever you say, Len,â she then leisurely agreed, clearly unconvinced but willing to let her curiosity go for now.
âThanks, Cheri,â he hummed sweetly back at her. âNow, spinners: how do they make âem?â
The phone call had been immeasurably helpful, and the craftsman had taken to work as soon as it was over. Meanwhile, the miniatures shop had opened and closed with about the anticipated amount of customers, though an order or two had been placed later in the evening that he would have to get an early start on that night to be ready in time for tomorrowâs pickup.
Undeterred by any of such paying customers, the man was far too excited to âtest outâ his new creation, and thus opted to take his work upstairs for the night, flicking the lights off as usual as he finished locking the place up. Wishful thinking told him that this one would turn out a lot better than the seesaw had.
With one last peek at the shelf, assuring that everything there had been neatly arranged, the craftsman hung up his apron and disappeared behind the curtained door from which he came in, his shoes clacking up the stairs noisily until the kids were certain he was gone.
Thatâs when they went in.
âShh!â One kid, no more than eight or nine years old, urged to her friend with a finger shoved harshly to her lips. âYou donât want our parents catching us, do you, Simon?!â
The small light attached to her hip bounced and spun with the girlâs energetic movements as the group made their way through the pitch dark corridor of the walls. It wouldnât be much longer until this lesser-traveled path led them toward a slight crack in the walls, just the right height and width for a person no greater than four or so inches to pass through.
âNuh-uh!â Simon muttered back, crossing his arms over his chest with a huff. Then remarking under his breath, ââŚIâm not the one who left something behind, anywayâŚâ
The girl gasped in shock, a hand placed dramatically against her chest as if to illustrate the figurative stab to her heart. âOh my god I am so going to murder you!â She faux-whispered through a set of gritted teeth. âFor real!â
âBoth of you are going to wind up killed by that human if you donât stay quiet,â another girl, the oldest of the group at a proud twelve years of age, silenced the two bickering kids. âAnd arenât you supposed to be leading the way, Vi? Do you want me to take theââ
Instinctively, Violet whipped the light out of the older girlâs reach, turning to walk backwards just to cast her a pouting glare. âNo way! You said I could take it this time, so Iâm taking it. Back off,â she finished with a second flourished spin, facing the front again before running up ahead of the group.
With a half tired, half annoyed sigh, she felt a light tug at the hem of her shirt. Beside her stood her younger brother, practically adjoined to her hip, who their parents were actively convinced she was simply âwatchingâ at home while they were off on a borrowing trip elsewhere in the adjoining bakery.
âEmmie?â He whispered timidly up at her. âIs there really a human out there?â
The six year oldâs round brown eyes were wide with worry, being at an age where the most heâd heard of humans were the stories and cautionary tales their parents had told him. Without missing a beat, his sister promptly ruffled his hair in her palm, causing his hand to retract and the front to fall messily into his eyes; blowing it away from his face as he continued to peer up at her.
âObviously not,â she declared, a bit too confidently for her own liking. Not that she would let that part show. âWhy else do you think we go this late? Itâs so we donât run into any nasty, evil humans.â
Her brother shrugged once, followed by an incoherent noise of âIâunnoâ while his gaze shifted back down to the floor. The kid began fidgeting nervously with his hands. âIsnât it weird that thereâs a whole playground for borrowers lying around, then?â
Emmie blinked in surprise, her pace slowing just enough that someone further up ahead turned to glance at her, ushering her forward again. âUhh, well⌠yeah,â she admitted, both to herself and to him. âIt is weird. Guess itâs lucky we discovered it then, right?â
With that, Violetâs light vanished ahead of them into the crack in the wall, signaling to the rest of the group that theyâd arrived at last.
The very first thing that caught pretty much everyoneâs attention upon exiting the walls was the strange, brand new structure sitting idly just a few feet away. Immediately, three or more kids ran off to go try it, already arguing on the way about how the thing might work.
Violet, on the other hand, wore a stunned expression on her face for an entirely different reason.
âMy ribbon!â She exclaimed, an air of confusion evident even in her overwhelming relief. Dropping the light on the ground with a distant âhey!â from Emmie, the younger girl jogged straight up to the bench sheâd been sitting on last night.
All at once she recounted the chill that had gone down her spine once Simon pointed out to her that her favorite hair ribbon was missing. The scolding from Emmie, the crying to her parents, the lying about where she mightâve dropped it and the dread that she had probably doomed their secret nighty recesses forever.
Yet tonight, there it was, as perfectly unharmed as they all were. She wanted to squeal with happiness and tear up all over again.
Quicker than anything, Violet tied the pink hairpiece back into her long, auburn colored hair, feeling the familiar weight of it with a smile that could outmatch the sun.
âSee?â Some older kid called to her from close by, though she was far too busy smiling to herself to care who it was. âTold you it wasnât gone forever.â Their voice grew farther away as they added, âwhy donât you come try out the new spinny thing with us?!â
Instead, Violet plopped herself down onto the bench seat, swinging her legs out in front of her to emphasize her unwillingness to move. âNo thank you, Iâm good,â she replied, still grinning brightly as the kid left with a soft grunt of acceptance and hurried off to the slide.
Tonight, she was feeling far too relieved to have to lie to her parents again. Maybe sheâd tell them simply that she found it exactly where she lost it. Theyâd probably roll their eyes and chide her about not being careful, or tell another tragic tale about the dangerous humans that stalked outside the walls.
But Violet knew better, she figured. Because late last night the girl had bolted upright in her bed, remembering exactly where sheâd left the thing and feeling incredibly guilty over having possibly condemned her and everyone elseâs families to a death so alike those tragic tales sheâd heard.
Until a human, of all things, had given it back to her; put it right in her line of sight where they knew she would spot it. Something that made her curiosities absolutely soar.
With the whole world on her mind, Violet watched the show. A kid even younger than Emmieâs little brother had been placed in the center of the newest structure, while three of the older kids spun them around, chanting their name through bursts of playfully mischievous laughter. âI-an, I-an, I-an,â until the kid grew dizzy and had to get off.
âMy turn!â
âHow fast do you think thisâll go?â
âHey, give that back, it was mine firstââ
âârace you there!â
Young, squeaky voices layered over one another, giggling and squealing with their very best âquiet voicesâ on, all the while the craftsman upstairs was busy pretending not to notice the commotion in the slightest.

(A/N: This is an introduction to my OC, Devon, who I've had since the early 2010's, the age when the G/t community was primarily on DeviantArt. The scenario here is one I've wanted to write about for a while. What happens when you, a G/t enjoyer, discover that your crush has the ability to sizeshift, and they find out that you like it? It's a best-case-scenario for a G/t fan to reveal such a vulnerable part of themselves. Also, this one is long at 5,644 words! Art at the end is by therealhearts and I have been given permission to repost it here. This is ridiculously self-indulgent, but I hope you all enjoy anyway!)
âHey, can I talk to you for a second?â
You find yourself startled awake, glancing over your shoulder at your friend, Devon. He looks nervous, and you have no idea why, but you sit up and rub your eyes before nodding.
âSure⌠is everything okay?â you ask with a yawn.
He looks away, his hand rubbing the back of his neck before running through his short, dark brown hair.
âItâs⌠complicated, but Iâm not mad at you or anything. I just need to tell you about something.â
âSomething likeâŚ?â
âLike a secret Iâve been keeping, I canât keep hiding this from you. You deserve to know.â
You look at him warily, and he sighs anxiously.
âItâs okay, I just need you to promise me you wonât get scared. Iâm not about to tell you Iâm like a serial killer or something like that, but itâs, ah... still a bit crazy,â he says with a nervous laugh.
âAnd we have to do this now? Itâs one in the morningâŚâ
âYeah, I know. Iâm sorry, but I donât think I can sleep until I tell you.â
He gestures for you to follow him, and you do so, rising from the couch you were sleeping on groggily, curiosity and anxiety both tugging at you. He leads you into the garage, a spacious room with no vehicles occupying it, and turns the lights on. He takes a few steps toward you and gently places his hands on your shoulders, and you canât help but stare into his eyes. Itâs obvious just how anxious he is, and itâs mirrored in your own eyes.
âOkay. You trust me, right?â
âWell yeah, but youâre not making a lot of sense right now.â
âI know, Iâm just⌠worried you might see me differently after this, or that youâre not gonna want to be around me.â
âYouâre acting really weird, are you sure youâre okay?â
âIâŚ. I will be after this, I think. I hope.â
âOkay, can you please just tell me whatâs going on?â
âRight, yeah. So, Iâm not really sure how this happened, but I can⌠change my size. Like, I can grow.â
You blink at him. You feel a jolt of excitement in your chest at the idea, trying not to outwardly express it.
ââŚShow me.â
He raises his brows at you.
âYouâre not gonna scream or run away and hide?â
âI honestly donât know, just show me.â
He takes a deep breath, his eyes watching you carefully. Lifting his hands from your shoulders, he backs away a couple of steps and gives you one last âare you sure?â look. You nod softly, and he nods in return before he slowly increases in size a few inches. You jump as you watch him grow taller right before your eyes, clutching your hands close to you as you try to process what youâre seeing.
âItâs okay, Iâm not going to hurt you,â he quickly says as he stops, his hands raised. He sounds panicked, but you shake your head, you know this already. Youâre not afraid, youâre astonished.
âH-How long have you been able to-â
âI donât know, but itâs been a few months since I found out.â
You pause and blink at him a few times.
ââŚCan you grow any more?â
He looks at you incredulously, like he canât understand why youâre so calm about this.
âThis doesnât freak you out?â he asks, gesturing at himself with his hands.
You shake your head, unable to take your eyes off of him. He grows another few inches to answer your question, and you find yourself in awe as you look up at him. You were already short compared to him, but this is something else entirely. Lost in the utter absurdity of what youâre witnessing, you donât realize that your face has turned a deep shade of red.
His eyes soften when he sees you flushing, and he smiles warmly in response, any confusion or worry simply melting away. You finally catch yourself staring and look away from him, at the ground, and nervously wring your hands. Your heart begins racing as he then takes a few steps closer until youâre only a couple of feet apart. He reaches down with a hand thatâs now quite big, gently tilting your chin up to look at him. You notice him grow a bit more, feeling his hand increase in size and watching him become even taller.
Thereâs a soft, yet somewhat playful glint in his eyes as he watches you, having not expected this sort of reaction from you at all.
âWhatâs got you so flustered? I was so worried that youâd be afraid of me after this, but you only seem more shy now. Is this⌠do you like this?â
You stare into his eyes briefly before looking away, suddenly feeling like youâve been caught doing something wrong. Your cheeks turn a deeper shade of red as heâs effectively got you cornered, yet you know that he would still let you pull away if you needed to.
âI-I⌠d-do you like itâŚ?â you ask in an attempt at redirection, not wanting to admit it.
He smiles softly, chuckling warmly as he grows another few inches, now standing at eight feet tall, looking down at you with an expression of adoration toward you that makes you feel weak in the knees.
âI do now.â
You already knew you liked him, but for some reason you canât explain, him being able to grow in size immensely increases the intensity of your crush on him. You realize now, too, that heâs either just found out about your crush, or heâs known for a while now. At this point, you suspect itâs the latter.
He watches you fidget nervously, his thumb reaching up to softly brush over the side of your face.
âHey, itâs okay. Do you want me to grow more?â he asks, his tone now soothing and comforting. Heâs clearly much more relaxed about this ordeal now than he was at first, and he doesnât seem to be judging you about this.
You sheepishly nod your head, your breathing quickening as you feel him pull away and step back before watching him sit on the ground cross-legged.Â
He begins to increase in size again, taking up more space in the garage until his head nearly bumps the ceiling. He then stops and watches your reaction, but all you can do is meekly stare at him, wanting to get closer but too shy to initiate anything. He seems to take notice.
âItâs okay, you can come here,â he calmly encourages.
He slowly uses one hand to beckon you over, waiting until youâre close enough before reaching both hands under your arms and lifting you up, bringing you closer and setting you down in his lap, facing sideways.
The moment youâre sat in his lap, you feel his presence all around you as youâre held in his arms, with one of them resting behind your back for support and looping around to hold your legs so theyâre folded in, curling you against him. Feeling his warmth surround you causes you to shudder and flush, and you notice his head tilted down, watching you closely with his deep brown eyes that you can now see so much more detail in.
The moment you make eye contact, you look away, finding it incredibly difficult to keep a small little smile off of your face as heâs holding you. You tilt your head down to try and hide it, but it quickly becomes obvious that heâs seen it anyway.
âOh, you like this a lot, donât you?â he gently teases, but his voice also holds genuine undertones, and a strong sense of relief.
Knowing youâve definitely been found out, you lightly nod your head, sharply inhaling when he gives you the softest squeeze inward before slowly exhaling. Even if you are shy and flustered, youâre still enjoying this immensely. You feel yourself briefly pressed tight against his chest, your hands now finding out just how much definition his abdomen has through his shirt as you place them on him reflexively. You freeze up, finding all of this a lot to process as he relaxes his arms and gives you back a little room in his lap.
âIâm glad youâre not afraid. Admittedly, Iâve known youâve liked me for a while, but I wanted to wait until I knew whether or not you were going to be afraid of me like this first before I said or did anything.â
You feel a sinking feeling in your chest as you realize it was clearly more obvious than you thought it was, and you find yourself sitting a bit stiffly in his lap. He leans down after a moment to check on you.Â
âAre you okay?â
You feel him gently brush against your arm, leaning just slightly into his soft touch as you look up at him. Seeing the warmth in his eyes, the way he smiles at you sweetly, you find yourself melting just a little. You nod softly, though your hesitance is still written all over your face. He reaches up to hold the side of your face in his hand, his thumb rubbing over your cheek.
âStill feeling a bit shy about all of this?â
You nod your head again, fidgeting with your hands before he gently grasps them both in his other hand.
âYou donât have anything to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. If I havenât made it clear enough, I like you too, and Iâm actually really glad you like this new part of me that Iâm still trying to figure out.â
You feel your heart flutter when he confirms that your feelings are mutual, and you feel a wave of relief now that the scary part of having these feelings for him is over. You still fidget anxiously, however, as this has now instead left you feeling a little overwhelmed. He takes notice, humming in thought for a moment before speaking up.
âIâm gonna re-situate you a bit here, are you alright with that?âÂ
Once more, you nod your head, feeling both excitement and nervousness as you think about what he might possibly do next. He pulls both hands away from behind you, and you watch and feel him reach them under your arms. With the same amount of care as before, he carefully lifts you up, rotating you to face away from him before setting you back down in his lap. You feel your back brushing against him, flushing immediately.
âDoing okay so far?â
You jump, not having expected to hear and feel his voice rumbling behind you. You feel him chuckle softly, but he sounds more sympathetic this time.
âSorry, I didnât mean to spook you. I havenât been too loud, have I?â
After taking a moment to acclimate to it, you shake your head. You can feel the heat of his body directly behind you, his torso a looming presence as you glance around, unsure of his next move.Â
Itâs not long before you find out, seeing his arms reach in to loosely wrap around you. You place your tiny hands on one of his forearms, and he places his hand over and strokes his thumb across them.Â
After a few moments of still sitting a bit stiffly, he begins to slowly squeeze you closer to him. You can feel his abdomen pressing up behind you, and youâre now acutely aware of his breathing as he tucks you in close.
If you werenât already flustered enough at this point, you certainly are now. You try to relax a little, but instead you only tense up more as you begin to cling to him. You wonder if some small part of you is worried that this will all go away if you let go.
âHey.â
You feel him rumble behind you, tilting your head back to look up at him.
âAre you sure everything is alright? Youâre holding on pretty tight there.â
You look back down, seeing his thumb still rubbing the backs of your hands. The affectionate gesture, his arms holding you to him and keeping you warm, itâs all still so new to you.
âI-Iâm sorry, Iâve just⌠never been close to someone like this before.â
You feel him hum an âawwâ sound briefly behind you, feeling it vibrate through you into your very core.
âI understand. You donât need to apologize, this is new to me, too. I mean, Iâve held people before, but Iâve never been big while Iâm holding someone.â
You feel him lean over you, his shadow looming and all encompassing. He speaks to you just above a whisper, a hint of his voice still present and rumbling through you as his chest presses against you.
âWould it help if I told you I really like holding you like this?â
The wave of warmth rushing through your chest as he speaks those words to you so softly, along with the chills that run down your spine, is like nothing youâve ever felt before. Knowing that heâs enjoying this helps you feel less shy about it, and you finally begin to slowly relax in his hold.Â
You release your grip on him, letting go of your worries as you trust him to hold you and not let go, and as you hoped, his hold on you does tighten just enough to account for it. You release any lingering tension in your muscles until you fall limp, hearing him chuckle as he makes sure you wonât slump too much.
âComfortable?â
âMhmâŚâ
âGood.â
Once heâs confident in his hold of you, he raises a hand to the side of your face. You feel a wave of warmth as he brings it in, resting it over your cheek, but really it encompasses the entire side of your head. He begins to softly stroke your temple with his thumb, a display of affection that finds you closing your eyes in response.
Feeling your head resting in his hand, youâre lulled into a state of deep calm as he holds you. You can feel his heartbeat behind you, itâs so soothing, what could go wrong if you just closed your eyes for a secondâŚ
.
.
.
âŚYou arenât even aware that youâve dozed off until you feel the gentlest of shaking, jolting awake once more and looking around in a brief moment of confusion.Â
âEasy, itâs alright, you just fell asleep,â he chuckled.
Realizing now whatâd just happened, your face turns beet red, feeling both embarrassed and self-conscious that youâd just fallen asleep in his lap like that. He doesnât seem to mind, however.
âHey, itâs alright. I would have let you sleep more, but my back would kill me if I sat like this all night.â
âHow⌠How long was I out?â
âAbout twenty minutes.â
âOh, I-Iâm sorry, I didnât mean to-â
âShh, itâs okay, I promise. If it were a problem, I wouldnât have let it happen in the first place. It was actually really cute, if Iâm being honest.â
You still find yourself feeling embarrassed about it, but he once more strokes the side of your face before tilting your chin up. Even though his face is upside down to you, you can still see the warmth and care in his eyes.
âIt really is okay. In fact⌠If youâre comfortable enough with me being this big to fall asleep in my lap, how do you feel about me being even bigger?â
You feel a shiver run down your spine as he proposes such an idea, looking up to see him watching you warmly. Just how big could he get? You donât know, but itâs clear he hasnât shown you the full extent of his ability to grow yet. You nod your head softly, seeing him smile as he approves of your response.Â
You canât help but feel a little disappointed as he carefully lifts you from his lap and sets you on the ground, shifting in size back down until heâs his normal height and standing to his feet.
âOkay, Iâm gonna grab something for you real quick, then weâre gonna go outside to the hills.â
âWait, outside?â
âYeah, I canât really fit in here if I grow bigger than I just was.â
âOkay, but⌠Sleeping outside?â
âItâll be fine, Iâll keep you safe and warm, I promise.â
You flush deeply as you think about what that could feel like as you watch him step back into his place from the garage entrance. Moments later, he comes back out carrying a pillow and blanket in his arms. After making it back to you, he holds them out toward you, and you awkwardly grab hold of them in your own arms. You realize quickly that they arenât yours, briefly confused until you notice that they pleasantly smell like him.Â
âThere, that should be plenty warm for the night. Letâs go,â he said, heading toward the exit into his backyard from behind the garage.Â
Stepping through the back door, youâre met with a small fenced area, but he exits through the fence gate and begins to wander into the fields behind his home.
He approaches a sizable hill, motioning for you to follow him as you carefully try to carry his pillow and blanket without dropping either. He pauses at the base of the hill, nodding in approval.Â
âThis should do nicely. Iâm going to get a bit bigger than I was before, just let me know if you start getting scared and Iâll stop.â
You nod your head, watching him begin to slowly grow until he reaches 10 feet before sitting himself down in the grass. He then continues to grow, surpassing 17 feet before pausing to check on you.
âIs this too much?â
You softly shake your head.
All you can do is watch in awe as Devon continues to grow, his body taking up more and more space until he reaches 22 feet, then stops, looking very comfortable at his current size. He then turns his head to look at you, lifting his arm and motioning for you to approach him.Â
You realize almost immediately that this was much easier when he was in charge, picking you up and putting you down where he wanted. Now, you have to convince your muscles to move when youâre still trying to take in just how big and cozy he looks. He makes it worse by patting his abdomen invitingly, making it clear where he wants you settled. Youâre already struggling to keep your knees straight as they threaten to go weak, and Devon speaks up, his voice a bit louder now, but still soft and gentle.Â
âCome here, I want to hold you again.â
Hearing him confirm that he isnât simply humoring you, a concern that annoyingly wonât go away, gives you a slight boost in confidence.
Itâs enough to get you to slowly wander up to his side, at the very least. This close, the difference in size hits you even harder, and you pause in place as you stare up at him, seeing him watch you with warmth in his eyes. You flinch just slightly as he reaches down, gently taking the pillow and blanket from your arms with careful fingers that are now much, much bigger than even in the garage. Feeling someone so massive take something from you so delicately is difficult to wrap your head around, but he smiles as he lifts his hand from you, placing the bedding into his other hand before lowering his arm down by his side on the ground next to you.Â
After heâs made it clear that you have to climb up onto him yourself, you step forward and place your tiny, slightly shaky hands on the side of his forearm. You kick off your shoes and take a deep breath before using it to brace yourself as you slowly, awkwardly start to climb your way up.Â
Crawling over his arm, his skin, is an experience you never thought you would be living right now, but here you are, stumbling slightly as you feel him tense up beneath you reflexively. You reach out and grab onto his shirt to steady yourself before continuing upward, climbing up and onto his abdomen with relative ease. Once youâre up, you turn to look and see him smiling softly.
âThere we are. Go ahead, make yourself comfortable.â
You jump as you feel his voice beneath you, and thatâs the moment it sinks in that you are completely on top of him now, your weight supported by him entirely, with solid ground being a few feet below you. You look around with slightly wide eyes as you try to take it all in, and grab onto his shirt with a slight jolt after his abdomen raises below you, realizing that you can feel his breathing beneath you as well as his speech. You feel it raise and lower you slightly, feeling your face flush as you realize just how close, personal and intimate this situation is, much different from sitting in his lap earlier. Here, heâs supporting your entire body atop him with ease, and you can tell just how muscular he is beneath the shirt youâre now laying on. You glance up, both hearing and feeling him chuckle beneath you as you sit and process, his hands coming up to rest beside you.
You shift yourself a bit until you find a position thatâs a little more stable, your breath hitching as you feel the warm, living surface beneath you twitch in response to your movements. Everything he does now just feels much more massive in scale, and you find yourself sitting rigid, your face a very deep shade of red, as you try to keep your composure.
Devon catches this, and reaches over to gently tilt your chin up toward him. He wears a warm smile as he regards you comfortingly, his thumb brushing across your cheek.
âDonât be shy, you can relax. Itâs okay.â
He releases your chin as he carefully reaches his arms up to loosely encircle you, and you watch them hover nearby, waiting patiently. You adjust yourself into a position where youâre half laying down, still trying to get used to the fact that youâre resting on such an incredibly massive being. Movement is slightly unsteady, but you finally find a position youâre comfortable with. Laying down almost on your back, you use your elbows to keep yourself supported, resting quite stiffly. You donât know why youâre still so shy despite Devon clearly giving you all indications that he wants this too.
âAll the way, little one,â he croons, reaching his hand over to gently stroke down the side of your face with the backs of his fingers.
Those words, followed by that motion, cause you to release all of the tension in your muscles as you slowly melt, and his hand follows you as you finally lower yourself down the rest of the way. Leaning back entirely against him, you take in a deep breath, slowly letting it out as any apprehension left fades away. You even go so far as to snuggle in, wriggling your upper back and shoulders against him until youâre perfectly comfortable.
âThatâs it, settle yourself in. Iâve got you,â he reassures. You can hear the beaming grin on his face through his voice as he reaches down, slowly placing his arms across you and pulling you in.
With his arms wrapped gently yet firmly around you, youâre not going anywhere, and youâre not upset about it one bit. Feeling a bit more confident, you decide to try and get a conversation going.
âS-So, you said this started a few months ago, right?â
âMhm. I really donât know what caused it, but I felt something⌠awaken in me, I guess? I really donât know how else to put it. Iâve messed around with it a little, but I donât know exactly how big I can get, and I havenât been too interested in finding out, since I donât want to hurt or scare anyone.â
You give his forearm a squeeze with your hands, an attempt to offer him comfort.
âWell, Iâm not scared.â
You look up at him, giving him a smile as he looks back down at you. He smiles softly in return.
âThen I guess I have someone to experiment with this around now, donât I?â
You feel yourself shudder under the tone of his voice. Itâs teasing, but also incredibly enticing. He knows you like seeing him grow now, and as you flush deeply again, itâs obvious heâs learning exactly how to fluster you and taking full advantage of that knowledge.
He chuckles beneath you as you hide your face beneath your hands, and you know heâs pleased that his attempts are working. As if teasing you even more, he grows a couple more feet around and beneath you, now at 25. His forearms get just a smidge bigger as they gently squeeze in, holding you to him very securely.
âHmm, look at how small you are, now⌠almost small enough to fit in my hands,â he says, clearly not done learning what your limits to this might be.
The thought of only his hands holding you has you swooning, and you suddenly feel yourself going weak at the thought. You feel him hum pleasantly beneath you.
âMmm, you like that idea?â
You nod your head, and he moves one of his arms to bring his hand in, brushing his thumb against your cheek as he smiles down at you.
âHow about we try that tomorrow, then, hm? Iâd do it now, but Iâm already comfortable, and Iâm enjoying holding you like this.â
You nod again, his gentle touch relaxing you further as you snuggle in against him. You finally feel exhaustion creeping in, the adrenaline starting to wear off from the initial shock of Devonâs size shifting reveal. You yawn as you pull your arms back in toward yourself, trusting him to keep you secure.
He carefully tilts your head up toward him, smiling as he sees how tired your eyes are, as if heâs been waiting for this moment specifically.
âAre you getting sleepy again?â
You nod your head, yawning again as you lean into his hand.
âLetâs get you all tucked in, then.â
You turn your head to stare up at him with concern.
âWait, isnât the ground uncomfortable to sleep on, though?â
You watch him shrug.
âEh, it could be worse, I've done it before. Honestly, though, getting to sleep out here like this with you is worth a little back pain tomorrow,â he says with a smile.
You still donât feel totally satisfied with his answer, but youâre too tired to argue any further. You yawn once more and rub your eyes, trying not to pass out right then. You hear a deep sigh, and you can feel the anticipation heâs had for this moment.
âIs it alright if I make myself bigger?â he asks warmly.Â
You nod your head, thinking that he probably means a few more feet. Instead, you feel him shifting beneath you as he grows until heâs reached a staggering 40 feet. You feel tiny now as you lay atop him, glancing around in shock and mild apprehension as you realize just how vast he is beneath you.
âCome here,â he croons, his voice rumbling beneath you in a soft, loving tone.
You look up just in time to see his huge hands approaching, feeling a rush of anxiety and adrenaline in your chest. You glance around quickly, feeling significantly overwhelmed at this point. You felt confident when you told him you werenât scared of him, but you didnât expect him to get this big, and you canât help but feel just a smidge frightened.Â
You squeak as you begin to back away from his hands, only to find your efforts immediately thwarted as he moves one hand behind you, blocking you. You lean to the side to try to escape, but heâs quicker than you are, blocking you on both sides and closing his hands in.Â
His thumb brushes against your shoulder as you give up, clinging tightly to his shirt and trembling. You jolt with a quiet whimper under his touch, and you hear a hum of concern.
âOh no, easy, easyâŚâ he murmurs softly. âShh, shh, shh, shh. Itâs okay, sweetheart, youâre safe.â
You feel his voice softly rumble beneath you, hearing care and comfort in his tone as he tries to quell your fears.
âDo I need to shrink back down a bit?â
You slowly shake your head, his offer to shrink comforting you, a confirmation that you feeling safe and comfortable are still his top priorities. You may be afraid, but you also want to push through this. You take a few deep breaths as you try to ground yourself. He wonât hurt you, you know this, so what is there to be afraid of?Â
You shiver as a gust of wind breezes through, instinctively huddling closer against him. You hear another soft âawwâ from him, and then feel warmth around you. You lift your head to see his hands cupped around you, blocking the breeze from hitting you.
You look up at him, and he watches you with a smile. Any fears you had simply melt away as with that small gesture, he manages to wordlessly calm you down. You smile back after a moment as you adjust to his new size.
âMay I pick you up?â
You nod your head, watching as his hands close in around you. With the utmost care and precision, he softly scoops you up off of his stomach using both hands and lifts you up. You cling tightly to his thumb as he brings you up to his chest, letting go only after he sets you back down. His hands pull away, and you look up to see him watching you fondly.
âHow do you feel sleeping here?â
He holds up his blanket and pillow in his hand, and you nod your head, knowing that this means putting all of your trust in him. He smiles as he reaches his hand in, focusing closely on his movements now that his hands are much bigger to you. He uses his fingers to stroke down your back, gently coaxing you into laying down on his chest.
âItâs alright, darling, you can relax. Iâve got you.â
He reassures you once more, as he has been the entire night. Always checking on you or encouraging you closer, itâs very obvious that he cares about your perception of him at this size immensely, and you suspect he was bracing for a much more negative reaction to all of this. With the way his huge fingers are still so delicate in their movements, you begin to slowly relax on his chest, curling up and tucking your arms in.Â
He offers you the pillow first, and you take it from him to rest it beneath your head, adjusting it until you find the best position for it to go. He then drapes the blanket over you, and you take a deep breath as you snuggle inward under it and on his chest. You then feel the weight of both of his hands resting over you, holding you close and making sure youâre warm, and that you feel safe with him. The gentle pressure is enough for you to feel his heart beating in his chest directly beneath you, lulling you into an even deeper state of calmness.
âSo, what do you think?â he asks quietly, and you shudder as you feel the deep vibrations in his chest rumbling through your entire body, chills running down your spine. You feel his thumb rubbing your shoulder, soothing you further.
You think about everything thatâs happened tonight. You were initially annoyed that heâd woken you up so late at night, but that annoyance quickly faded into wonder as Devon revealed his secret to you. After discovering that you like this secret, heâs wasted no time in taking the opportunity to hold you, to wrap you up in his arms and cuddle you close to him. He was quick to comfort you in your moment of fear, solidifying your trust and strengthening the quickly growing bond between the two of you.
âI⌠I really like this,â you whisper meekly, clinging to his shirt once more as you relax under his gentle stroking. You feel a soft hum of satisfaction beneath you, and you curl yourself further inward.
âI do too. Since this happened, Iâve been hoping that someday I could hold you like this, that you would feel safe around me, and here we are. Thank you for trusting me with this, it means a lot to me.â
His voice is so calm, so soothing, so warm. Combined with his hands holding you close, his heart beating beneath you, and the gentle warmth enveloping you from all sides, youâre struggling to stay awake in such an environment. You yawn softly, your eyes closing as you begin to let sleep take you.
âMmm⌠is there anything I can do to make you feel more comfortable, little one?â
âMm-mmâŚâ you quietly mumble, shaking your head. Youâre already feeling nice and cozy after being lovingly tucked in on his chest. You donât know if itâs even possible for you to be more comfortable than you are right now.
âThen sleep well, darling. Iâll be right here if you need me,â he whispers, continuing to stroke your shoulder as youâre slowly drifting off.
Focusing on the feeling of his breathing and heartbeat beneath you, both a bit slower with his size increase, youâre soon lulled to sleep, excited about what the morning might bring, wondering what it will be like to see him grow even biggerâŚ
You know the struggles this tiny being before you has faced. Everything is dangerous to them, but most dangerous are people when they don't know what their intentions are. If they trusted the wrong person, you shudder to think of how easily they could hurt them in so many ways. This is why it astonishes you that theyâve chosen you as the one they trust the most.
Not that youâd hurt them, of course. That you might accidentally do something like that has given you nightmares, but they donât seem to think that would ever be the case. As you sit and watch them, you stretch out your arm toward them and offer them your hand, an invitation to them. You keep it still as they approach, your heart fluttering as they immediately climb on, like it wasnât even a decision they had to make to do so.
You feel their cold little hands making contact with yours, your fingers twitching as they do. Itâs a reaction you tried to fight back once, worried that they would think you were about to grab them before they told you that it didnât bother them. They said it was nice to see a reaction like that, to know that they affected you in the various ways that they did. So, you let your hand react as you feel their weight crawl towards and settle in your palm.
You know at this point you would be safe to pick them up, but you donât. Instead, you simply hold them as they are, a grin on your face as you watch them so fondly. This minuscule being puts their life into your hands, quite literally, on a regular basis, but you still sometimes have to stop yourself from going through the motions. You need to make sure you take none of this for granted, that you recognize how important it is that they trust you so much.Â
You also donât want to just skip over small moments like this, giving yourself the opportunity to just enjoy how they feel sitting in your hand. You love that they enjoy this as much as you do, it makes it easier to feel less guilty when you want attention from them. You donât even need to pick them up to just hold them like this, theyâre already being held, and you see them begin to take advantage of the fact that you havenât lifted them just yet.
You feel warmth in your chest as they begin to lay down, watching them curl themselves up right in the middle of your hand. Their head rests just below your fingers, taking advantage of that soft, plush section of your hand to cushion it. They relax completely, and you know the warmth you offer them is something they cherish, and that they can be warmed in such a special way in the first place.
You know how much vulnerability this kind of situation puts them in, even more so in this particular position, and you marvel at the amount of trust and confidence they have in you to keep them safe. They cozy themselves right up against you, and you know your world is all the richer for having them in your life. Despite how small they are, they matter so much to you, and itâs so important to you that they can seek comfort and safety from you like this.
You curl your fingers inward in a bid to make them feel less exposed, to protect them from every threat possible, even though you know none exist at this very moment. You have such an ample opportunity to hold them, and youâre going to enjoy every moment of it. They smile as they nuzzle their face against the soft surface theyâre snuggled on, and you watch them close their eyes. Thereâs no greater trust that they can place in you than that, making themselves entirely dependent on you for safety, knowing without a doubt that you wonât do anything to betray that trust.
They look so happy, so content and relaxed, and you canât help but want to interact with them a little. Sure, you have them laying in the palm of your hand, but you know theyâll appreciate this gesture. You bring your other hand over, curling your index finger inward and gently brush it across the side of their body. You feel their sharp inhale as you make contact, waiting for the release of that breath that you know is coming. And there it is, a slow exhale as they simultaneously melt under your touch.
Your heart warms as they make themselves so comfortable in your hand. Theyâre very clearly enjoying this, and you are too. You chuckle quietly, hoping not to disturb them too much as you speak softly to them.
âLook at youâŚâ
As warm and happy as your tone is, youâre unable to hide a hint of bewilderment in your voice, still quite frankly, astonished that you two have made it this far from where you started. If you told yourself the first day you two met that you would end up like this, past-you would have laughed in your face. Nonetheless, here you are, and youâre not complaining at all.
As happy as you are to hold them like this, however, you feel the strain in your arm from holding it in the same position for so long. You pull your other hand away, wincing as you watch them deflate just slightly in disappointment, but you know youâll be back at it before long.
For a moment longer, you think of the best place to sit to keep holding them like this for as long as they want you to. You then slowly lift your hand, smiling as you see that they donât move at all, thereâs no reaction to being picked up. Theyâre already cozy, and you know that they trust that you wonât drop them.Â
You make your way towards a lounge chair, making sure you keep your hand as still as possible to keep your tiny friend feeling safe to stay as they are. Approaching the chair, you slowly lower yourself down into it, bringing your hand close to you to watch them. They havenât moved at all, and now you can ensure your arm is in as comfortable of a position as it can be for the duration of their stay in your hand, however long that may be.
Knowing now that not only are you holding them, but you now have them closer to you, relaxes you immensely. You donât have to worry about anything as long as youâve got them, you just need to make sure theyâre comfortable and happy. Your breathing is even as you settle in, and you reach your other hand back over toward them to continue stroking them as you had been before.Â
You know that youâre a comforting presence for them as well, and that holding them like this gives them a feeling of security, of safety and reassurance. You will always be here if they need you for anything. Whether itâs to seek you out after a nightmare, or to simply be held and stroked exactly like this, you have no problem being that source of comfort for them.
You lean back and close your eyes, focusing on their minuscule weight in your palm, and their soft breaths on your skin indicating that theyâve dozed off. Every now and then they shift, and you feel like you can see their smile growing wider as they do.Â
Theyâre so small, but that doesnât matter. They mean so much to you, and right now, as they doze and occasionally shift ever so slightly, you feel like you have your entire world in your hands, and you couldnât be happier.
As someone no taller than 3.5 inches, hands are dangerous. Hands can grab, squeeze, crush, pull, or otherwise injure you so effortlessly. Itâs been hard figuring out whoâs hands you can trust, and whoâs to stay very far away from. Theyâre also terrifying even without being in them. Theyâre imposing, threatening, chasing, all encompassing, and can be a petrifying sight when theyâre headed right for you.
This hand, though, the one extended toward you, palm facing upward like a platform, is none of those things. Itâs opened in an invitation, motionless and still as it rests in front of you, waiting. You trust the giant this hand belongs to with your life, showing no hesitation as you slowly climb up onto it.Â
Their skin is warm beneath you, a relief as it begins to seep into you the moment you make contact. Their fingers twitch ever so slightly as they feel your tiny hands on the surface of their hand, an acknowledgment of your presence, and nothing more. You make your way into the center of their palm, their hand being the only thing supporting you now.Â
They donât lift you right away, however. Instead, their hand sits there and holds you as you are. You cast a curious glance upward, seeing them watch you with an enamored smile. You smile back, knowing what theyâre thinking about without having to say anything. Youâre so incredibly tiny in their hand, so light, so delicate and fragile, and theyâre adoring seeing you just sitting there, relaxed and casual about all of this.Â
Given that theyâre not moving, you decide to make yourself at home. Being cradled to their chest is wonderful, but sometimes just enjoying how it feels to be held like this is comforting as well. You lay yourself down, curling up in the dip of their palm and resting your head comfortably on the soft, padded section of their hand just below their fingers. You feel the expanse of warmth beneath you, snuggling in as you sigh deeply and eagerly embrace that warmth.
Thereâs something so special about how deeply you trust the giant watching over you, how easy of a decision it is to make yourself completely prone in their hand. If something were to happen, youâd have less reaction time to escape, but you know that would never happen. You are completely safe here.
You look up as their fingers curl in protectively, as though shielding you from all that could cause you harm. You smile and nuzzle against the soft surface you rest your head on, closing your eyes in the greatest display of trust in the giant that holds you. You feel a shift in movement, but not in the hand beneath you, and you sense a shadow approaching, yet you keep your eyes closed, knowing that they wonât hurt you.
Even still, you sharply inhale when you feel the back of a finger on their other hand brush slowly and softly over your side. You exhale slowly, letting yourself melt in their hand as they encourage you to relax further. You hear a quiet chuckle from them.
âLook at youâŚâÂ
Their voice bears warmth, happiness, and a hint of bewilderment, as though they still canât believe you trust them this much. They continue to stroke you for a moment more before pulling away. You immediately miss their touch, but itâs not long before something else happens.Â
You feel the motion of them finally lifting you up, and you donât move at all. Thereâs no urge to hold onto them, no wariness as to where they might be moving you, no fear that theyâll drop you, and no concern about what theyâll do to you. You simply lie still as you are, letting them bring you wherever they want.
They then stand to their feet, and the motion of them walking soothes you further. Itâs not long before you feel a dropping sensation as they sit down. You donât know where they are, and you donât really care. Youâre happy here, they donât seem interested in putting you down, and thatâs all that matters.
You do, however, know that youâre closer to them, now. You can feel their presence towering over you. You know just how massive they are without opening your eyes, and it comforts you further. You hear them breathing, slow, smooth, content. If theyâre stressed, you can hear it, but right now theyâre just as calm and soothed as you are.Â
It heartens you to know that despite how small you are, how perfectly you fit in their hand, you still bring them plenty of comfort. You know that being able to keep you close like this brings them a sense of security, they know that as long as they have you, nothing will happen to you.
Once again, you feel their other hand approach, and their finger brushes against you. This time, however, their hand lingers close, and you know theyâre in a position where they can keep both hands comfortable while holding you for however long you need or want.Â
You fall into a deep state of relaxation as time goes by, their attention never leaving you as they stroke your side much more slowly now. You donât completely pass out, but every now and then you fall into a light doze⌠only to wake up a few minutes later, remember where you are, and smile as waves of warmth and comfort wash over you again.

Isabell tries to focus on the movie, she really does. Itâs just that the couch they had made for her is on the coffee table, completely out in the open, and directly in front of the humans. So, when the movie starts it feels like the humans are just watching her. She has this jittery urge to check over her shoulder every few minutes.
She knows she can trust them, theyâve more than proven that, but turning your back on a human like this is something that you simply donât do. Thatâs something thatâs been deeply engrained in her; itâs not something that just goes away. Even still, she does her very best to just ignore it.
âŚ
She canât focus. This is pointless.
She would much rather just be closer to the humans than sit worrying about if theyâre staring at her from a distance. She canât stand it any longer. She turns. Theyâre not even looking at her, of course they arenât, it was an irrational thought. She waves, and Zekeâs eyes flick down to her. He leans in to see what she needs.
âCan I just sit with you?â She asks quickly, before she can talk herself out of it. This gets Marcusâ attention too.
âOf course,â Marcus says. Zeke nods, and begins looking down at the couch around him, trying to figure out the best way to set her up.
âHow would you like to-â he begins, but Marcus just reaches forward. Zeke is all about plans, Marcus is all about action. Isabell tenses as his hands rush toward her, but he pulls back at the last moment. He rests his hand palm-up nearby instead of just scooping her up. She is almost certain that he remembered to do that at exactly the last second, but he remembered. Itâs progress.
She steps into his hand, and once sheâs settled, he lifts her gently off the coffee table. He shoots a quick glance between her and Zeke. There is a spark of mischief in his eyes.
âHere,â he says with a wink down to her. Before she can process what heâs up to, he thrusts her forward. She lets out a small sound as he tips her out of his hands into Zekeâs. He curses under his breath as she tumbles into his hand, but he quickly becomes steady beneath her.
She lays on her back, staring straight up at him with flushed cheeks. She only catches the underside of his jaw as he shoots a glare at Marcus. His roommate just reclines back on the couch with a self-satisfied grin.
Zeke finally turns his gaze down to look at her, sprawled out in his hand. The eye contact is enough to pin her there a moment longer. He quickly glances over her. Sheâs wearing black shorts and an oversized pink shirt that reads âBARBIEâ and hangs off one shoulder. Her hair is down and itâs long enough to spill around her in soft waves. He only looks at her for a moment, but it feels like heâs seeing her in enough detail to count all of her eyelashes.
She should be terrified, but she can feel the remaining whisps of her resolve slipping away. All this contact with the humans, she likes it. She isn't supposed to, but she does. Which is exactly why she has to leave. At least for a little while, if for no other reason than just to prove to herself that she can. But she refuses to let herself mourn a moment that isn't over yet. Eventually, she has to go home, but right now she will enjoy spending time with her lads.
âOkay,â Zeke says quietly. His fingers curl in slightly, and he pulls her closer to his chest as he looks away from her. He moves a pillow, making a small stack between him and Marcus. âHere, letâs try this.â He sets her down gently. She steps off his palm and immediately sinks into the plush surface.
Marcus chuckles, she looks up to find both him and Zeke looking down at her.
âSorry, youâre really cute,â Marcus says, not even trying to hide his wide grin. Zeke also looks amused in his own way, but he looks away as soon as she caught him looking. Her cheeks burn with embarrassment, and she situates herself on the pillow, with some difficulty.
She isnât convinced that this is better.
The two humans tower over her on either side. Sheâs closer, sure, but now she somehow feels smaller. Not to mention, every time she moves, she sinks deeper into this pillow.
She huffs quietly, looking up at the humans around her. Marcus is reclined easily, holding a bowl of popcorn. Zeke is stiffer than his roommate, shifting slightly as though heâs not quite comfortable but heâs too worried about disturbing her to do anything about it.
This is silly. There are better options available. She looks around for a moment before an idea springs into her mind. She fumbles her way to the back of the pillow; her movement instantly draws the attention of the lads around her. She grabs on to the thick woven fabric of the couch cushion. She hoists herself up and begins scaling the back of the couch.
âWoah, Isabell-â Â Zeke leans forward, hovering a hand beneath her, like heâs torn between wanting to grab her, and wanting to let her climb on her own. But, sheâs halfway up the couch before he even finishes saying her name.
âSheâs fine, dude,â Marcus says around a mouthful of popcorn.
âI know,â his brow furrows, âjust⌠I know.â Despite saying that, he doesnât stop following beneath her, in case she were to fall.
She easily makes it to the top of the couch. Zeke slowly pulls away, looking at her with a sort of astonishment. The humans probably donât realize just how proficient she is at climbing, considering theyâve only known her while sheâs been basically immobile. Holding her arms out for balance, she walks along the back of the couch closer to Zeke. She grabs onto his sleeve and pulls herself up onto his shoulder. She perches there, dangling her legs off the front of him.
Once she's there she realizes that was the first time since her injury that she has been able to climb something without it being a total disaster. She smiles, feeling a much-needed sense of accomplishment. She missed the dull ache of activity in her limbs. It feels good.
Zeke has craned his neck to look down at her, he doesnât say anything, he barely even breathes. He just blinks at her. She grins up at him, thrilled that sheâs finally able to move on her own again, and relishing a little bit that she was able to do something that a human found impressive.
âOkay,â his voice is a low whisper. âI guess⌠is that where you want to be?â
âIs this fine?â she asks him, realizing suddenly that she is very close to him.
She didnât really think about that. Maybe itâs because sheâs so high up, or that he canât really look at her from his shoulder. It just seems like less of a deal to her than being held in his hands. Apparently, from his reaction, he doesnât share the same opinion.
âYeah. Itâs- yes, of course.â Â
âIâve got to get a picture of this,â Marcus says, pulling out his phone.
âLet me see!â She says, once heâs taken it. Marcus turns phone around to show her the screen.
In the picture, Zeke looks so cool. A small, amused smile pulling across his lips, a slight quirk of his brow, and there she is! Smiling from her perch on his shoulder. Sheâs never seen herself like this before, sheâs only ever experienced it from her point of view.
âOh cool!" She looks at the phone, her eyes shining, "I wish I could keep this somehow," human technology is so interesting.
âWe can print it out for you,â Marcus says. âIf weâre doing that, I want to be in one too!â He turns the phone around, leans closer to Zeke and takes another picture.
After that, Marcus settles back into the couch. Zeke still sits stiffly, like heâs afraid any movement will topple her from his shoulder. Â
âYou can move you know,â she leans over giving his neck a playful shove. He flinches slightly at the contact.
"I- You sure?" He asks quietly.
"Yeah. You can be comfortable. I'll allow it." She smirks, she can hear Marcus chuckling behind her.
Zeke shoots him another look before bringing a hand up near her. He moves carefully, finding a comfortable position. Once heâs done, Isabell lays down across his shoulder, reclining against his neck. He tenses slightly and holds her breath as she moves, but when sheâs settled and heâs certain sheâs not going to fall, he tentatively lets himself relax.
âFelix?â Her voice calls out into the clearing as she steps through the trees. She finds him sitting on a rock, elbows against his knees, head down. He doesn't look up when she approaches.Â
âHey, you good?â She sets her bag down by a tree and sits next to him on the rock. âI'm sorry I guess I sort of caused a-â
âI'm not in the fucking mood right now, Beauregard.â He snaps at her saying her name like itâs an insult.Â
Oh.Â
Right. He went to Rosehill, so he knows her brothers. Apparently, heâs not a fan.Â
Suddenly, she isn't 'Charlie' anymore. She's a Beauregaurd. She thought that things could work out differently this time. If she could just get to know someone first, she could be more than her name.
Obviously, she was wrong.Â
âIâm not my brothers,â her voice comes out sharper than she wanted.
He scoffs.
âSeriously, whatever beef you have with them-â
âYouâre just going to pretend that you donât know?â He's glaring at her.
âKnow what?â she asks, exasperated.
âI fought Marshall.â
âAlright? And?â
âI won,â he looks at her like that should mean something to her. It doesn't. Not really.
Mars is tough. He gets into those super fights all the time, it comes with the territory. He doesn't lose often, but it's bound to happen eventually. If anything Felix is telling her his power is very strong. But that isn't something that should concern her.Â
â...Congratulations?âÂ
His jaw tightens, like somehow that was exactly the wrong thing to say.Â
âFelix, I donât know what you want from me. I just came out here because I thought my friend was upset.â
âFriend?â He questions viciously.Â
â...yes,â she had thought they were friends.Â
âCute."
Ouch.
âKay.â She hops up to her feet. Felix moves with her immediately. His shoulders squared, muscles braced like he's preparing for something.Â
She shakes her head. âWe aren't doing this. Youâre being a dick. I'm leaving,â she says, turning away from him to collect her things. Â
âWhat, because it would be beneath you?â he asks with a sneer.
She laughs. Not because it's funny, it's really not funny at all. It's just that heâs being ridiculous. Her laughter only makes him more upset. She shakes her head, slinging her backpack over her shoulder.
âLook, Iâm not going to fight with you over something that doesnât have anything to do with me,â she says simply.
âNo?â
âNo. Iâm leaving,â she repeats.
She turns to walk away, and suddenly a wall slams down in front of her. She jumps back quickly, whirling around to face Felix again, only to discover that heâs, well, everywhere. That wall... is his hand. She follows his arm all the way up to his shoulder, then further to the scowling face blotting out the sky. The size of him is dizzying. Itâs impossible.Â
What is happening? She quickly replays this in her head trying to figure out what she missed and how this was a reasonable escalation.Â
âCome on, Beauregard,â his voice is low but still resonates through her. Sheâs probably being dramatic but she swears the ground rumbles as he talks. âYouâve been holding out on me. What can you do?âÂ
The hand forming the wall behind her moves. Lifing over her. All she can do is stare gobsmacked until he plows her over. With a single finger he pins her on her back against the forest floor. The digit rests heavily against her chest, her hands fly up to meet it.Â
Her stomach does a flip as she looks at her hands, both of them, braced against his fingertip. As if that would do anything to stop him if he decided to grind her to a pulp against the ground right now. She tries to breathe through the pressure. It's not impossible. She supposes this is him being gentle.
âYour heartâs beating so fast,â he notes, âA Beauregard? Scared?â He looks her over in disbelief, a teasing smirk spread across his face.Â
He thinks they're playing a game, but she doesn't know any of the rules.Â
âI- I yield!â She calls up to him. Sheâs seen fights before. That usually ends it.Â
âWhat? Thatâs it?âÂ
He pulls back. She pushes herself up on her elbows, breathing deeply, now that she can. His hand comes down again, she lets out an involuntarily yelp when he pinches her between his two fingers. Her backpack is left behind as sheâs whisked up off the ground, into his waiting palm. He holds her up to his face, studying her, his brow pinching together as he tries puzzling her out. All she can focus on is how high up she is. Heâs sitting yet she is so stupidly high off the ground.Â
âYouâre not going to even show me your ability? Thatâs bullshit. Youâre showing me what you can do first. Then, we can be done.âÂ
He doesnât really give her any time to respond. He grabs her up again, pinching her by her ankles and dangling her over his head.Â
âFelix!â she shouts.
âAw. Afraid of heights?â He taunts her, letting her sway back and forth in his grip. She has always hated roller coasters, this is a million times worse. She flails, trying to grab onto something, anything, but coming up empty. âCareful squirming like that. You wouldnât want me to⌠lose my grip.â
âYou wouldnât,â she gasps. âFelix, I know you wouldnât.â
âYou donât know shit,â the playful tone drops from his voice.Â
He lets her go, and she falls.Â
It's only for a moment before he catches her. She lands face first against his other hand, hard. Past the panic and the blood roaring in her ears, she can hear him chuckling. She scrambles to right herself, pulling her knees to her chest, sitting in the center of his palm. She canât catch her breath. Her heart hammers so fast it feels like itâs trying to break out of her ribcage and leave her behind to deal with this on her own. She sucks in uneven, shallow gulps of air, all too aware of the scrutinous eyes taking her in.
Being held like this doesnât feel particularly secure, but itâs better than where she was. At least she can almost pretend the ground isnât that far away. At least she isn't dangling upside down. But still, despite the relative safety, a dull awareness of the danger seeps into her. She could have broken an arm just then⌠or worse.
âYouâre so stubborn. All you have to do is just-â Â
âWait!â She shouts. He's been moving too fast for her to explain. Her brain has finally caught up, and she's not going to get herself hurt because she's too proud to say this, âI donât have an ability!âÂ
His body jolts, jumbling her awkwardly in his palm as he freezes sharply. Blinking down at her wordlessly, his brows pinch together, like he's not quite understanding what she's saying.
âI am completely mundane! Alright?â
The world lurches, the ground rushes up to meet them as he suddenly drops his height. He sets her down fast, like holding her was burning him.
âAre you serious?â Â His hands are clamped down on her shoulders, his expression is nothing short of bewildered. He scans her up and down frantically assessing the damage. âWhy wouldnât you say that?â She pushes him away.Â
âOh, I'm sorry! I didn't realize you wanted me to introduce myself like: âHi, I'm Charlotte Beauregard. Yes, as in those Beauregards. Don't worry though, I am mundane, no powers here.â That probably would have been more normal than what I was doing. Should have led with that!â
She feels so jumbled up right now, even the little things feel impossible to process.Â
He rakes a hand through his hair, swearing under his breath. He steps away from her, pacing across the clearing. She watches him. Oh sure, she gets tossed around like a ragdoll, but he's the one that gets to freak out.
âCalm down, Felix.â She says, with a sigh, crossing her arms to stop her hands from shaking.
âI swear, I didn't know. You're a Beauregard! You- I mean all of them- I didn't know.â
âThat's not an apology,â her tone is dry and emotionless.
He clamps his jaw tight, stopping mid-step to look her up and down.Â
âSure," she says. "Fine. That was horrible, and you're a jerk. But don't say youâre sorry or anything!â She waves a hand his way dismissively and picks up her discarded backpack once more.Â
âBeauregard, seriously-â
âCan you stop doing that?â She snaps, whirling to face him. âIt's just Charlotte. Or Charlie, if you want, I don't care. But I don't- I'm not-â she shakes her head, she can't make the sentence fit right. She doesn't want to talk about how she's a failure held against the legacy of her family name. Not to him, especially not now. She forces her mouth into a tight smile. She knows it isn't convincing, probably mostly looks sad. âCharlie's fine. I'm going to leave now.âÂ
He raises his hands, a wordless surrender. Telling her heâll let her go this time.Â
He still hasn't apologized. Probably isn't going to. She leaves him alone in the clearing. She holds it together for long enough, but once she's solidly down the path, and sure she's not being followed, hot angry tears spill down her face.Â
She thought she had made a friend.
It feels stupid to be upset about that, considering the danger she was in. But, that's what hurts the most. Now that the panic is gone, sheâs just⌠mad. She's mad that her family somehow managed to ruin this for her. Hundreds of miles away and they still ruined it. She's never going to be able to outrun her name, she's never going to be able to outshine her brothers, and she was stupid for thinking she could try. She hugs her arms around herself as she walks back to campus alone.Â

Easton's POV
I was only half paying attention to the movie. Maybe a bit less than half, actually - my mind kept floating back down to the small forms sitting on my desk. The small people sitting on my desk. I wasn't sure if I'd ever fully get used to how small humans were. The fact that all three of them could have sat on my laptop's keyboard and still had room to spare exemplified their tiny size.Â
The three women had brought over folding chairs and blankets to set up in front of my laptop, making a sort of makeshift movie theater. Their set up reminded me of the summer movie nights the park I'd worked at back on my planet would have, where people would gather on a lawn outside one of the visitor centers for an evening film. It also looked far cozier than the admittedly hard metal chair I was sitting in. It was made from sort of Earth metal, and was far more industrial than it was cozy. Or even comfortable, really. Given how hard I suspected it would have been to manufacture a chair that was my size on Earth, though, I'd never voice that. Instead I usually just sat on my bed, which had a thankfully decently comfortable mattress at least.Â
That hadn't really been a viable option for watching a movie with humans (and one equally tiny vampire), though. It was too far away for me to really see the screen if I was sitting on my bed and the laptop remained on the table. And the trio joining me on my bed wasn't feasible. That seemed like it would have been too intimate for what was supposed to be a casual movie with coworkers, as well as a bit practically difficult with how small they were. I imagined maintaining balance while attempting to traverse giant bedding would be hard.Â
âMan, more ads already?â Penelope said as a commercial for some prescription drug replaced the comedy movie that had been playing. It was a film from Earth I hadn't seen before, revolving around male models.Â
âThe price for âfreeâ movies, I guess,â Angie replied.Â
âWhat do you think of the movie so far?â Zoey asked, leaning back in her chair and looking up at me.Â
âIt's really comedic,â I said. More blurted, really, with any more eloquent potential responses choosing to replace themselves with the feeling of butterflies as I met Zoey's gaze. Wow, real smooth. What type of response even was that, it's a comedy movie. Of course it's comedic.Â
âI was not expecting those guys to die in that gas station explosion though.â I added with a laugh, hoping my initial response hadn't seemed as painfully nervous as I felt.Â
âYeah, that was pretty dark if you think about it,â Zoey replied. âSo much for my weekend plans to have a gas station dance party.âÂ
I laughed at that, both Angie and Penelope joining in as well. Before I could reply, a vibration followed by an incoming video call notification appeared on the laptop screen. All three women jumped, the buzzing no doubt closer to actual tremors for them.Â
Shit, shit, shit. I almost went to hurriedly hit decline on impulse, catching myself at the last second before actually moving.Â
âSo sorry, I'm just going to lean over you guys to hit decline,â I said instead, making sure to keep my arm well out of the way of the three humans as I tapped the screen, declining the call and putting the device on do not disturb. I could feel my face burning with embarrassment, which was not helped by the realization that the red rushing to my cheeks was going to be incredibly obvious to my small coworkers.Â
âI'm super sorry about that, I should have put it on do not disturb to start with,â I said, also realizing that looking down to attempt to hide the redness in my cheeks did not help at all given that all three humans were already below me anyways. If anything, it probably made it even more obvious.Â
âHopefully it wasn't-are you guys okay?â I wasn't even really sure what I was trying to say. The noise had been loud - louder to them - but not harmful. Probably? Â
Fuck, was that level of noise harmful to humans? John had never said anything about it, or the human friends I'd had on Aphiria. But I also hadn't had this laptop back then, and I wasn't sure John had ever been standing as close to it when a call came in as my coworkers currently were. What if it was like, deafening or something? Another wave of panic washed over me.Â
âIs Jasper a relative?â Zoeyâs question caught my spiralling mind so off guard I just stared at her for a moment. Possibly a bit too long of a moment, pieces slowly coming together in my mind. I'd been so focused on hitting decline I hadn't actually bothered to look at who was calling.Â
âHe has the same last name as you,â Zoey added. âWhich, I guess it could totally just be a common name on your planet-âÂ
âHe's my brother,â I said, finally mentally catching up, then realizing I'd cut her off. âSorry. I'm really sorry about all of that.âÂ
âIt's fine, man. Male models will still be waiting whenever,â Penelope said, sounding slightly confused. âDid you want to like, call him back? In case it's something important?âÂ
âI'm sure it's nothing, I can just call him back later tonight,â I said. âThe ringing wasn't likeâŚtoo loud?âÂ
I saw realization cross Zoey's eyes. âOh! No, we're fine. It was more just surprising. But not painful or anything.âÂ
I felt some of the tension leave my body.Â
Thank goodness.Â
Zoey's statement seemed to clarify why I was so flustered to the other two at least in part.
âOh my god, yeah, don't worry, it wasn't harmfully loud,â Penelope added.Â
âOkay, good. I wasn't sure,â I said with a nervous laugh. I apparently still wasn't fully used to the smaller - the much - smaller size of the most of the inhabitants of Earth. Especially when it came to things that might be harmful to someone that size but wouldn't warrant a second thought to me normally, as the absolute last thing I wanted to do was accidentally hurt someone through an oversight like that.Â
âI used to go to a lot of punk concerts anyways, so if anything was going to give me hearing damage, it's probably already happened.â I evidently still looked concerned, as Zoey offered me a reassuring smile along with her words. Seeing the soft smile on her face worked - it was the sort of smile that felt like a gentle hug, and was hard to stay worried upon seeing. Or at least as worried, anyways.Â
âAnd seriously, if you want to call him back real quick just to check it's cool,â Angie said.Â
âAnd then we'd get to talk to another Aphirial!â Penelope chimed in enthusiastically.
I was almost 100% sure Jasper's call would be nothing important. Still, it wouldn't hurt to make sure. Plus, some part of me wanted him to see that I was (for once) with people on Earth. That I was making connections at work and succeeding at adult life or whatever.Â
âWell, I guess I can just make sure. It'll be quick,â I said. I once again let them know that I was going to reach over them. As I leaned forward, I caught a glimpse of Zoey gazing up at me with a look ofâŚalmost wonder? That probably wasn't right. Maybe nervousness, given that I was looming over her. I couldn't imagine it was a very flattering angle. I hastily opened the video call screen and hit the button to call Jasper back.Â
He answered it quickly. I saw a brief look of surprise when he noticed the three small people in front of the camera before he composed himself and directed his gaze up to me.Â
âHey, man. Is everything okay? I'm in the middle of a movie with some coworkers.â I said.Â
âI was just going to call to say hi, just realized it'd been a minute since I checked in with my youngest brother. We can catch up later, though.â He said. âDon't want to interrupt movie night!âÂ
âYou're not interrupting anything!â Penelope called, giving a dramatic wave from her spot on the table. âSo you're Easton's brother?âÂ
âThat's me. Name's Jasper, and you don't look likeâŚwhat was it, John?â Jasper said, his eyes flickering down ever so slightly to look at Penelope at the bottom of the frame.Â
âThis is Penelope, she works at the gift shop here,â I said. âAnd that's Zoey - she works at the gift shop as well - and Angie, who's a ranger.â Zoey and Angie both gave a wave when I referenced them.
âIt's nice to meet you!â Penelope said.Â
âWell, it's nice to meet all three of you as well. I take it you're settling in nicely there, then, E?âÂ
âYeah. It's a beautiful planet,â I replied. âI feel very fortunate to get to be here.âÂ
âThat's good to hear. I won't keep you, but give me a call when you're free sometime. And again, nice to meet you three,â Jasper said, giving them a wide smile. He hung up shortly after.Â
âHe seems nice,â Zoey said.Â
âYeah. He's chill,â I replied. It was a bit more complicated than that, but it didn't seem like the time or place to get into a couple decades worth of family dynamics and drama. And these days, he was definitely one of the chiller members of my immediate family.Â
âI've now gotten to speak to 200% more people from Aphiria than I had before I came here,â Penelope said.Â
âDoes a videotape really count though?â Angie teased.Â
âI'm counting it. Unless Easton wants to take me back to Aphirial for the holidays, that's probably the closest I'll be getting.â Penelope replied, crossing her arms.Â
âI think that would involve a lot of paperwork,â I said with a laugh.Â
âSo, we gotta count it.â Zoey had taken Penelope's side it seemed.Â
âWe gotta,â Penelope repeated.Â
âAlright, fine, you guys win. It counts.â Angie said.Â
âSoâŚnow that we've completed that side quest, shall we continue the movie?â Zoey asked, looking up at me.Â
âYeah! And, again, really sorry for theâŚside quest.â I wasn't familiar with that term, but surmised it was slang on Earth for a secondary, unplanned venture.Â
âI like side quests,â Zoey said with a shrug, smiling up at me.Â

NowâŚ
Dark. Cramped. Cold.Â
The walls Briar traversed day in and day out felt suffocating to a man who had spent his last couple of decades roaming the outside world freely. He felt stifled, forced to stay in a place that constantly set him on edge. It was a nightmare house crawling with beans. Soldiers. Maids. Townspeople. Who knew how many were here at any given moment. For what purpose or for how long?
It wasnât safe to travel on the floors. Walking on mantel tops and climbing tables in the light of day wasnât an option either. The borrower was forced to navigate the dark, complex maze withing the walls of the mansion.Â
If it was just himself that he worried for, he would have left as soon as he arrived. Go from house to house until he either found someplace safe to hide or a tiny crack in the exterior wall and made a break for it.
Unfortunately, with Jace and Layla, he didnât have that option.
Living with two humans who were constantly aware of his presence had made Briar soft. He had to relearn a lot of his bean detecting instincts that were still waking up from hibernation. He had almost been caught a few times in the past few weeks by soldiers and those maids running rampant through out the mansion.Â
Yes, weeks.Â
Briar and the kids had been living under this oppressive roof for too long. Even when they were traveling, Briar didnât like to stay in one place for this long. Layla was still being forced to go to school, coming home crying every other day. That was bad enough, but something was wrong with her. More than her usual crying or being upset. It had been a while since Briar had heard more than a sob from her throat, and he was becoming increasingly concerned as the weeks went by.
Jace would come back from boot camp looking utterly exhausted, but he said the days were getting easier as he grew more used to the training. He even managed to make a couple of friends. Than bean-girl Hannah didn't seem so bad. Once or twice a week he was assigned to guard duty of the main gate, with a supervising officer, and they even let him help patrol the outer perimeter too. Briar intended to leave with him the next time Jace would be sent out on patrol, get a better idea of the mess they had gotten into. Though, Jace didnât know that yet and hadnât agreed to it. Briar figured it be better to tell him once they are outside.
The little man did his best to visit the kids when he could, but now that he had made it to the first floor, it was even more difficult and exhausting to find a way back upstairs to their bedroom. At this point, Briar hadnât seen them in about five days, as he searched the various rooms for any signs of other borrowers.Â
Two days ago, he did see screws lined up along an outer wall like a ladder. Perfect for a borrower to climb leading to the top of a book shelf. Though it was old and breaking, that was good enough for Briar to keep looking on this side of the house, though it was the side soldiers and the General more than often occupied. Leading to too many close encounters with soldiers stomping about with their heavy boots.
All the chaos and stress and need for escape only made him all the more desperate to find any wall symbols or other borrowers that might help him get answers about this place and possible ways out.
Today, Briar entered a vast room through a rat hole at floor level beside a tall book shelf. The room had several red velvet chairs surrounding a grand mahogany wooden desk. The chair beside the desk looked like a kingâs throne. The shelf beside him was stacked with books and a large mirror on the opposite wall.Â
Despite his better judgment, Briar left the safety of the walls to explore this new space. Based on the description Jace had given him, this was part of the forbidden wing of the mansion. The Generalâs office.
He walked away from the rat hole, giving him a clear view of the slightly ajar metal door leading to the hallway, with complicated locks, evidently there was information in here that General Monroe didnât want anyone to find out. Perfect.
He knew he had ro be quick, a bean could come back at any moment.
He noticed a piece of paper laying on the elegant rug, apparently having fallen off the mahogany table at some point after a bean meeting. Briar couldnât make heads or tales of the words, but he did recognize the images. A map, showing a birds eye view of the town. It would have more up to date information than any wall symbols, given it seemed the town surrounding the mansion was significantly new compared to the building at its heart. This paper was only a small portion of the map, showing a corner of the town. Briar looked up and spotted more sheets of paper on the desk above.Â
Taking out his hook, then swinging it into the air and catching on the side of the desk. He pulled to make sure it was steady before making his assent. Having recovered from his injuries by now made it much easier to travel and borrow in the mansion. Though he was getting on in age, leading to his bones creaking and aching at the most inconvenient times.Â
Making it to the top, he didnât let himself rest before taking in the pieces of paper before him. The town expanded in all directions from the mansion at its heart, having been built around it. At the bottom, blue markings clearly defined the lake and a thick black block separated a stream from the large body of water. A dam. The human-beans built a dam, leading to the river becoming a lake. Both fortifying the south side and providing water to the entire town. Briar had to admit, he was impressed with the ingenuity.
The walls bordering the town ended abruptly beside the lake as if anticipating the water would be enough to deter anyone from escape or entrance.Â
Near the water, but still within the walls indicated food and crops, farm land. Few bean made buildings occupied this map. Worst comes to worst, the kids and I could hide somewhere here and swim for freedom, Briar thought.Â
A soft gasp and shattering porcelain broke the silence of the room.Â
Briar turned pale and locked eyes with a woman standing not five feet from the desk on which he stood. A human-bean. There was nowhere to hide, nothing but the maps on which he stood.
Neither moved, taking the other in.Â
The woman had dropped the tea set she had been carrying upon seeing the borrower. One of the cups had shattered and tea was quickly seeping into the intricate rug, staining it. But she never took her eyes off the borrower.
He recognized her as one of the maids who had been taking care of the children, but he knew that grace would not extend to someone like himself.Â
The woman was the first one to move, she pinched the skin on the back of her hand and closed her eyes. Blinking and squeezing her eye lids as if trying to wake herself from a dream. She did this several times, even holding her breath at one point.
She finally opened her eyes and focused on the borrower. A gasp escaped her slightly parted mouth as her bottom lip quivered. Her eyes began to water, she was almost to the point of tears.Â
Briar went from terrified to utterly confused. What did he do to possibly make her cry?
Before they could stare at each other any longer, heavy boots were heard marching down the hall. Jolting both the borrower and bean out of their stupor.
More human-beans.Â
In a flash, the maid reached down and grabbed the tea pot, still leaking liquid onto the rug, and ran towards the desk Briar stood upon. She was too fast.Â
Sheâs about to kill me. Mash my bones with ceramic porcelain. Or trap me. Deliver me to the other beans to be interrogated. Iâm not sure which would be a worse fate.Â
The tea pot was coming down like a fist from the heavens. He closed his eyes, preparing for the worst, but instead of hitting Briar, she slammed the tea pot down in front of him.Â
He looked up at the bean in utter astonishment, but was met with the sight of her back. Not only was the tea pot there hiding him from sight, but she put herself between him and whoever was on the other side of the door.Â
âAnd that is why you have to be tougher on your recruits, Sergeant.â
A chill ran up Briarâs spine. He recognized that voice and venom filled his veins. He instinctively grasped the needle at his hip.
âIâd say I have to disagree with you, Colonel.â Another voice Briar recognized, Drill Sergeant Brown. Jaceâs officer. âI find being strict is important, but showing compassion and respect for their abilities can be just as crucial.â
The third soldier, who Briar didnât recognize, scoffed. âYouâre definitely too soft, Brown.â
To Briarâs dismay, these three beans entered the room. Colonel Johansen, Drill Sergeant Brown, and the third man towered over the human-bean woman. The human shield before him was ridged, yet she didnât move as the men came closer.Â
The other soldier raised an eyebrow and took in the state of the room and woman standing ridged in front of the desk, âwhat are you doing, girl? Get a move on, clean up this mess.â
The maid shook her head.Â
âMel. That was a direct order. Move.â The Colonel said. The maid stared daggers at him. He gritted his teeth, irked at her defiance, but watched her for a moment. Then his demeanor changed, a ghost of a smile appeared on his lips, that made Briar shiver. âDonât tell me you started hearing voices, seeing things again?â
Mel scowled indignantly.Â
âI understand the doctor recently cut back on your medication, but you couldnât have relapsed that quickly.â
âShe hears voices sir?â Sergeant Brown quirked an eyebrow. âHer?â He emphasized that word as if to say âare you kidding me?â
âYes, voices. And she sees things that arenât there.â The Colonel reveled in how uncomfortable the room got. âShe may look all sweet and innocent, arenât the most dangerous of them usually are? Sheâs the schizophrenic savage who gave me this.â He followed the path of the scar that went from his chin to his eye.Â
The other men balked. Looking from the short young woman to the terrifying officer. To think that she was the one to lay a hand on him was almost absurd.Â
Mel didnât deny it. Her mouth stayed shut as she stared at the men before her. Briar noticed the white knuckled grip she had on the table.Â
âHow?â The third soldier asked. âHow did sheâŚâ
âWell, it was about three years ago,â Johansen tapped his chin. âThis mansion was the home of the Perkins family. Very wealthy, old money and all that.â As the Colonel spoke, he made casual strides about the small room. Moving it like a vulture about to feast. Never taking his eyes off Mel. She didnât break eye contact either. âErnest and I had been chasing a pack of Razors for a few days, but unfortunately, they had broken into the Perkins mansion, killing almost everyone. Luckily for the one surviver, I was there to rescue her.â
Mel sneered at his words. A growl started in her throat, so quiet that only Briar could make it out.Â
âI found her in the kitchen, screaming about some⌠oh, what was it?â He snapped his fingers trying to jog the memory. âA hammer? Hazelnuts? Or was it Honey?â
Mel bristled at the sound of that last word on his lips.Â
âAnyway, she was trying to claw her way into a tiny hole in the wall, probably hoping to crawl inside and hide like a rat. I grabbed her, trying to save her life, may I remind you, and she slashed my face with a fucking butcher knife.â The Colonel only paused his stride to take in his fellow soldiers' shocked faces. He turned his cold eyes to the woman, âwhat? Not going to defend yourself, Mel?â He smirked, âCat got your tongue?âÂ
Mel all but turned red with blind rage, she let out an audible, guttural growl from her throat. Making the Colonel smile wider. The other two men took a weary step back.Â
âThatâs awful,â Sergeant Brown said.Â
âOh, it wasnât all bad.â Johansen had finally finished his vulture swoop around the room and was almost beside her. âWhy donât you step forward and show these fine men what I gave you in return?â
She stumbled back against the table, shaking it and tried to turn around, but it was too late. Briar backed up against the tea kettle, closing his eyes to wait out the shaking world around him. An oppressive shadow overtook the desk.Â
The Colonel grabbed her face, forcing her jaw open with his fingers. âLook,â Johansen said as he turned her open mouth to the other men.Â
A gasp escaped the third soldier, â⌠H-her tongue."
âYou cut out her tongue?â Sergeant Brownâs eyes darkened as he watched Mel try to wrench herself out of the manâs oppressive grip. âYou mutilated another human being?!â
âOh please, she âmutilatedâ me first! Plus, she is less than human. We are now looking at the shell of a woman, who could have inherited a dynasty of wealth driven to insanity when her family was killed. We even took her house and used it as our base. And yet after all that, she chose to stay. Why is that my dear?â He turned her to face him, squeezing her jaw harder
Mel began to cry out in pain. She was shaking, the humiliation was too much. She would have tried to cover her mouth, hide the gaping hole the muscle once occupied, but she refused to let go of the desk.Â
âSir, youâre hurting herââ Sergeant Brown stepped forward.Â
âStand down soldier.â Colonel Johansen said, âIâm just showing you how to properly teach a lessonââ Ow!â
Mel bit his hand while he was distracted, forcing the large man to let go of her face. He pushed her back against the desk, she let out a brief cry, but kept her grip on the desk.
âWhy you insolent, little snake! Apparently I didnât teach you well enough the first timeââ he raised his hand as if preparing to strike her across the cheek.Â
Briar almost cried out for the giant toâ
âStop!â Sergeant Brown attempted to grab his superior's arm, but he wasnât fast enough.Â
Mel flinched, bracing herself against the desk.Â
âThatâs enough Johansen.â A deep voice spoke, commanding attention. Everyone froze.Â
Colonel Johansen straightened up, saluting the General. The other two men followed suit.Â
âI would appreciate it if you do not harm my staff any more than you already have.â General Monroe strided into the room with the confidence of owning the place, which he did. âAre you alright, Mel?âÂ
She quickly nodded, not looking up at him. Her arms and legs shook with adrenaline and anxiety.Â
âI think we should leave her here alone, sir,â Sergeant Brown suggested.Â
âVery well, shall I send for Annie to help you clean this mess?â The General turned back to Mel, who shook her head. General Monroe grunted before looking at his subordinates, âWeâll discuss your reassignment in the mirror room, Johansen.âÂ
Mel and Briar perked up at the same time. Reassignment, what is that supposed to mean? Briar thought.Â
Three of the men left.
Sergeant Brown stayed behind, âAre you alright?â He offered Mel a hand. She ignored it, refusing to meet his gaze. âRight, dumb question.â He sighed. âI do apologize, Miss Perkins, he shouldnât treat you that way.â
She lifted her head slightly at the name she had long since stopped using. Tears welling in her eyes.
Sergeant Brown reached down and began to pick up the broken pieces of ceramic and set them on the tea tray. âIf I can offer any comfort, Miss Perkins, The colonel will be leaving in two days for another razor hunt down south.â He looked up at her and for the first time, her eyes met his. Almost hopeful. âHe could be gone for a couple weeks or a few months. We arenât sure, but at least you wonât have to be scared in your family home for the time being.â He held the trey out to her.Â
She hesitated before slowly prying her hands from the desk, still covered in sweat and shaking slightly. She took the trey, before setting it on the table slightly away from Briar.Â
Sergeant Brown tipped his hat to her in return and took his leave. Closing the door behind him.Â
Silence returned to the room, but fear permeated the space. Briar was alone with the bean who had just protected him, to her own detriment and pain. He was at a loss for words as he watched the titanic woman before him sink slowly to the floor as her legs finally gave in to their shaking, weakened state.Â
She seemed so strong a moment ago, a woman protecting him from three men bigger than even herself. Now, it felt as if Briar hit her hard enough, she might shatter.Â
âIâŚâ Briar began but cut himself off when Mel flinched. She hesitantly turned, he was just above her head now as she crouched on the floor. Her eyes were wide as if not entirely believing he was there. Briar gulped, âThank you.âÂ
Tears began to well once again in her eyes, blurring her vision. She covered her mouth, stroking her lips in a calming gesture.Â
âIâm⌠sorry for causing you so much trouble.â Briar bowed in shame.Â
She shook her head before forcing a smile to her tear stained cheeks.Â
âIs there anything I can do to repay you?â
She paused. Pointing to the rat hole he had come from. (He was a little unsettled that she knew exactly where it was.) Before opening her mouth, âH-uuh-ey.â Her voice was weak and hoarse from unuse. âOoo you o H-uuh-ey?â
Briar stared in confusion.Â
She let out a frustrated sigh, âH-uuh-ey?â She knew what she wanted to say, but her lack of tongue made it almost impossible. Being forced to approximate sounds to the best of her ability was still almost unintelligible. She shook her head, it wasnât worth the hassle.Â
After a long pause, she whipped her tears and sat up, meeting Briar eye to eye. She pointed to the hole in the wall once again, gesturing with her head and eyes.Â
Briar squinted, âYouâ do you want me to leave?â Briar almost couldnât believe it. When the kids found him, they never wanted him to go, now this bean was telling him to hit the road.Â
She nodded, ending with an affirmative grunt.Â
âIâ okay.â he hesitated for a moment before taking out his hook and dropping the line to the floor below. He looked up at the bean and found her back was to him. She proceeded to clean the tea stains on the carpet, scrubbing with the cloth she kept in her apron. Leaving Briar to his own devices. As he scaled down the cliff, he noticed that he didnât feel the familiar sensation of bean eyes staring at him. Layla loved to watch him climb even though he frequently asked her not to. He would sense her watching him. But now he felt nothing.
Briar touched the ground safely and retried his hook from the cliff. He cautiously backed away from the giantess before him, not taking his eyes off her. She never turned around, he could hear the soft sounds of sniffles as she whipped her eyes again.Â
Briar made it back to the bookshelf where the rat hole lay. Against his better judgment he called out to her, âThank you again, maâam.â
Her soft gaze turned to him, instantly finding him on the far away floor. Her smile did not meet her eyes as she nodded and began to stand up. She took hold of the tea tray, picking up the tea kettle that had shielded Briar from view just minutes ago. Setting the dirty rag on the tray before turning towards the door.Â
As she walked away, her shirt swung in her stride, revealing a little more of her leg. Her white sock had also fallen lower than the other and Briar noticed something black on the outside of her right ankle. He might have brushed it off as a mole or a birthmark, but its distinct silhouette made him do a double take.Â
Wait was thatâ
He was about to call out to her, but she had already made it across the floor to the exit on the other side, shutting the metal door behind her.Â
He shook his head. The stress and lack of sleep must have finally gotten to him. If he didnât know any better, ge would have said it looked like a symbol.Â

Jace
In which youâre offered something you deeply yearn for.
âYou keep staring at me.â
Those words shake you out of your daydream, one youâd be embarrassed to admit is happening more frequently.
âAre you still afraid of me?â
Not necessarily, you think. Youâd been staring at his hands, thinking about what it might feel like to be held by them. Ever since he discovered you and saved your life, heâs been exceptionally patient regarding you not wanting to be handled at all if possible. If itâs not possible, he tries to make it as quick and easy to adjust to as he can.
Given how incredibly gentle he is, youâve not been minding it quite so much lately. In fact, youâve been wondering to yourself what it might feel like for him to just hold you close, to cuddle you against his chest and let you lean against himâŚ
You shake your head when you realize youâre at it again, and you quickly look away to try and hide your red cheeks.
âIf youâre not afraid, then why do you keep staring at my hands?â
You shake your head again, but heâs quick to catch on, annoyingly so. You see him smiling softly from the corner of your eye.
âIf you want me to hold you, all you need to do is ask. You donât have to be shy about it.â
He states it so easily, thereâs no hesitation or judgment in his voice. All you need to do is askâŚ
You take a deep breath, trying to muster all of the courage you can in your tiny little body. You turn to look at him again, seeing him watching you with a patient smile.
âU-um, c⌠could you hold meâŚ? Please?â
His face lights up as you do as he suggests, nodding his head as you take deep breaths to prepare yourself for what youâve just asked for. He reaches over and, using both hands, gingerly scoops you up. You gasp as youâre suddenly in his hold, watching warily as he brings you closer to him. He looks down at you with a friendly gaze, as though waiting for you to respond to his actions. After you anxiously fidget for a moment, he softly speaks up again.
âIs there a particular way youâd like me to hold you? I have no problem with this, but if you want to get more cozy, we can do that too.â
You nod your head as he ends his sentence, speaking up even quieter this time.
âMore cozyâŚ?â you ask timidly.
He smiles, his hands bringing you to his chest and giving you exactly what youâve been hoping and dreaming for. Youâre tucked against him as he leans back, and you nestle in as his warmth invites you closer.
âThere you go, thatâs all you needed to do. You let me know if thereâs anything else I can do for you, alright?â
You nod your head, your eyes closed as you soak in this moment. You feel his thumb move, startling briefly before relaxing under his soothing touch. He rubs his thumb softly over your side, and you begin to nestle in closer. You sigh deeply as you feel his massive fingers keeping you supported, making you feel secure and safe. His warmth seeps into your body with ease, and you nuzzle your face into his shirt, clinging to it with your tiny hands.
âOh my, youâre quite the little cuddle bug, arenât you?â
You nod your head softly once more, not caring quite so much about how shy or embarrassed you feel anymore. Youâve been needing this for a while, and being on your own hasnât been conducive to receiving this kind of attention. While you didnât expect to find comfort from a human, of all things, you still welcome the opportunity to indulge in something youâve dearly missed, and he seems just as eager to provide it to you.
âYou should have said something sooner, sweetheartâŚâ he murmurs, his thumb brushing across the side of your face briefly before returning to your side.
You donât respond this time, instead focusing entirely on the feeling of being held by such large, gentle hands, and being cradled to his chest as his heart beats soothingly inches away from you.
âHere, Iâm going to lie down so you can lay on my chest. Hold on tightly.â
You do as he says, clinging to his shirt as he presses you up against his chest securely with one hand. His other grabs a couch pillow to lay against, and he turns to situate himself horizontally across the cushions. Heâs now halfway propped up on the pillow, and your tiny weight settles comfortably onto his chest as it supports you from beneath. Itâs still at a bit of an angle, so his hands continue to cradle you close to him to keep you feeling secure atop him.
âThere we are, howâs this?â
You take a moment to process all of this. Itâs one thing to be held close to his chest, itâs another thing entirely to be laying on top of his chest. It feels much closer, more intimate and personal, and you feel your face heating up as the weight of the situation hits you.
This human, who you strove so hard to avoid for so long, was now fully invested in making sure you feel safe and warm. He encouraged you to ask for comfort from him, and wasted no time in making sure he could provide it to you.
You offer him a small, shy smile in response to his question as you snuggle in, the weight of his hands over you soothing you. It feels like youâre constantly being hugged, and itâs something youâve been yearning for ever since you ended up on your own. His thumb strokes over you again and again, a gentle touch that begins to lull you into a doze as you close your eyes.
âYou can sleep if you want, youâre safe here.â
And despite this going against all rules in place to ensure your survival, you believe him. You feel like you can let your guard down, like you can let yourself be so incredibly vulnerable to him and that he wouldnât take advantage of you. You feel safe with him, and you let yourself relinquish your control, passing out surrounded by his warmth and soothed by his affection.
