The Little Bird

Bernie laughed and took a small bow. “You are most welcome.” She felt a little proud. Most Earth Elementals would not consider it a remotely interesting display of power. Rather basic really. But humans were easily impressed (and probably didn’t have grandparents who literally caused a volcanic eruption). “Oh that. That I’ve been doing since I was a tiny kiddo.”

“What was it like growing up as a Earth Elemental,” she asked curiously. In a normal situation asking questions like this would have embarrassed Amira, but right now she was too curious to care. “I mean was your life different compared to a human?”

“I think everyone’s life is, they’ve got a lot going on, for sure,” she smiled. Carter was shocked that of all professions that the lady before her wanted to be a historian, it was something she  hadn’t heard of someone wanting to do before, so it was quite interesting. “Damn girl, you’re really smart,” Carter complimented, throwing both doors open to the bar and stepping inside, “why a historian, though? Can I ask that?”

“Growing up I loved to read. For me reading was a means to escape reality and I had that feeling more so whenever I read books on History. While most children at my age wanted to become police officers or doctors I on the other hand wanted to be like the Greek Muse Cleo. Not because she was the leader of the muses, but because she was the Muse of History. A bit silly, I must admit, but I was a child,” she admitted with a sheepish smile. “How about you? What did you want to become when you were a child?”

Smiling softly she noticed her heated cheeks and just leaned over and placed a soft hand on them for a moment, letting her know it’s okay and that worse things have happened.

When the brunette placed her hands on her cheeks Amira tensed up immediately and curiously eyed her. Her brows furrowed at the things the brunette asked of her. She had heard of this. Masters and Mistresses having their own set of rules beside the general etiquette that was required. And though her rules made her bit nervous Amira hastily she nodded. “Yes I am still in,” she murmured softly with a nervous smile. 

Keith ensued yet another of his intrincate smiles, placing his cold touch over hers as they walked, now past the residence building. “Perhaps you should have thought about that sooner, darling. What are we to do now?” he complained, stern but playful. He was messing around, clearly, but what did that poor human know anyhow? Sighing, Keith gave up after a second. “I suppose there is the master’s lounge. Want to see that? I could buy you a drink.”

When Keith suddenly placed his hand on hers Amira could not help but jump a little. Not necessarily because of physical contact, but how cold his touch was. Just what was he that his touch was this cold. An amused smile crept on her face when he started to tease her which in return eased up her nerves. “Sure, I would like that.” Ever since she came on this Island she had wondered how the Masters lived. “Please lead the way, sir.”

Chuckling a little, he found himself unable to pick. “Oh man. That’s a loaded question. It’s definitely a tie between The Green Dwarf and Jane Slayre.” He grinned, looking down to find the Green Dwarf on the very top. “Whats your favorite of her novels?”

“Jane Eyre, most definitely.I know it is a bit cliché to choose that book, but what can I say? am romantic at heart,” she admitted with a sheepish smile. “Forgive me if my question sounds a bit blunt, but what are you?” Based on the other books he rented it seemed like he was a werewolf, but she could never be too sure.  

“Atlanta! Oh like T.I. and Tiny!” Carter smiled brightly, “it’s great over there,” she nodded. “I’m here from New Orleans and I’m a medicine major,” she shrugged, “I don’t think i have much of a story, honestly, I’m just a little girl from France who didn’t want to get married right away, so I came here,” Carter looked over, “what about you, girl?”

“You could say so, though my life is far more dull than theirs,” she said with an amused smile. Her smile widened when Carter mentioned where she hailed from. She always wanted to visit France, but she never got the chance. At her last question Amira carefully considered how she would answer her. “I came here to escape from life and follow my dream of becoming a historian.”

Hawthorne stepped toward the human female. “A false sense of arrogance. How typical of your species. Always believing you have value which you do not in fact possess.”

When he moved towards her Amira felt fear for the first time since she came here on this island. “F-forgive me, I-i didn’t mean to sound arrogant,” she quickly amended herself. At his last comment Amira could not help but frown and wonder how his reasoning worked. “Why do you believe that humans don’t have any value. More importantly what measures someone’s value?”

Magnus smiled at the girl, her embarrassment a little obvious.  He shrugged as he chuckled.  “You’re welcome.  I’m Magnus by the way.  Figured you’d like to know whose lips you were just kissing.”

“I-it’s lovely to meet you M-magnus,” she said with a shy smile. Gosh. It had been such a long time since she had been this shy. Normally she was so composed but Magnus threw her off. “My name is Amira. Amira Banks.” She held up her hand for him accept. 

“That one at least has a basis in truth,” Nathaniel explained with a nod.  “Many witches have familiars, and while a familiar can be any animal, it does require that the animal be nearby, for obvious reasons.  You can’t bond with an animal you never meet.  So domestic animals like cats are naturally more common as familiars.  And it may also just be the way cats always look like they’re up to something.”

“Wow. That is really interesting,” she said. And she really meant it. It was a moment like  this what reminded her why she was team witch in terms of supernatural creatures. Really what were vampires and werewolves compared to witches? Nothing in all honesty. “So, uh, what can you do then?”

Slightly startled at the sudden movement it took a couple of seconds before Amira relaxed and started to enjoy the display in front of her. When Bernie removed at the dirt from the ground and threw it into the trashcan. “Thank you.. You just saved me from spending an hour of cleaning this room,” she said before laughing. With a look of awe and amazed on her face Amira looked at Bernie. “How long did it take you to learn this?”

“Well that’s a pretty fucking shit birthday,” Hayden supplied with a shrug and shake of her head.  As much as she hated the anniversary and holiday crap, she’d always at the very least celebrated birthdays.  “Fuck ‘em all, what do you want to do?”

“Well I was hoping of going to the Moon Bakery and get some desserts and eat it while reading my favorite book,” she explained to the flame-haired young woman. “Do you perhaps have any idea how I could distract myself?”

Realizing her small error Amira felt her face heat up in embarrassment. “Oh, yes of course,” she said before laughing a bit. “Uhm.. do you perhaps have an umbrella?” She unfortunately made the mistake of not taking one with her coming to this island. 

Anna could tell that in the woman’s voice there was a bit of annoyance. However, Anna was being a bit annoying. She nodded and stopped, looking back to her book for a moment before she looked to the other woman’s book. “Egypt? What are you taking?” She asked, curious about the woman’s major. “Sorry, I’m just curious. I like Egypt’s mythology so I was wondering if it was a full class on it or just something history based.” She blushed a bit out of nervousness, giving a smile.

Amira looked down at her book before she looked up and smiled at the brunette. “Oh no, it’s quite alright. I am studying Ancient History. Technically we haven’t started on the subject of Ancient Egypt yet. That is for the next term, but since I am already done with my homework I thought that starting ahead would not be a problem,” she explained. “How about you. What are you studying.” As the curious person she was Amira subtly looked at the books on the girls side. 

“Great to meet you, Amira,” Carter nodded, “so, maybe we can get ourselves a birthday drink or two, but first, food, I’m starving,” frowning playfully, she smiled, “girl, of course I know the spots out here,” she nodded her head gesturing for Amira to follow along. “Alright, girl, what’s your major? Where are you from? Let’s bond,” she winked. 

Amira could not help but smile. The outgoing personality of Carter was pretty contagious. She would have no hard time enjoying herself with her. Standing up she quickened her pace to walk beside Carter. “Well you already know what my name is. I was born and raised in Atlanta and my major is Ancient History. How about you? What is your story?”
