John Singer Sargent: Nonchaloir
«Bride»
Moisey Spiridonovich Spiridonov, 1956~1960
painting & photoreproduction
This portrait of a bride-to-be is an outstanding work of Chuvash easel painting, which the artist began in 1954 and completed in 1960. Spiridonov himself called that work the main and most difficult as he set high standards for it taking responsibility upon himself. It is the reason why he often reworked the painting. The final version was preceded by about 4 versions. But despite his suffering and creative endeavors, this is his favorite work.
other ver. of painting, 1960s
The girl is depicted in traditional Chuvash wedding attire. Following the realism principles, the author used the classic technique of presenting the person on a dark background with top side lighting. Emotional tension increased by the turn of the head, accentuated by the plasticity of the hands and dynamic folds of the costume. The artist's style reveals the beauty of the ornamented dress and wedding veil, as well as the shimmering of beads and silver coins on the trad-headdress.
The girl's striking features are expressive, sad eyes filled with excitement and tension, which can be felt in the right hand holding a hanky and in the left hand nervously clutching a veil... It's not surprising: the waiting of a wedding, a new life; she may be forced to marry someone she doesn't love because of her parents. Moisey (Moses) Spiridonovich revealed not only the depth of the bride's emotions at the moment, but also her strong character...
«Two Satyrs»
Peter Paul Rubens, 1618 – 1619
Unlike most of the artist's works, this painting is a small format (only 76 x 66 cm).
In ancient Greek mythology, satyrs were the companions of Dionysus, the god of winemaking and drunken revelry. It's not surprising that the satyrs were only interested in debauchery with nymphs and drinking.
Rubens portrayed 2 types of satyrs: the one in the background prefers alcohol; in the front we see a voluptuous one - a lustful look and a grin, a bunch of grapes clutched in his hand сan make the viewer embarrassed. There is either a defiance or a bluff in his eyes.
2 mythological creatures are a symbol, an image. They represent the animal and human principles in person. The contrast between the strength and bestial nature of satyrs, on the one hand, and their human emotions and actions, close to us, on the other.
There is another interpretation of the painting: although it is called "Two Satyrs," there is only one satyr in it.
In the background Rubens portrayed a man drinking, with a trickle that could be either blissful drool or spilled wine. On his head is the mask of the lion he would like to be. The true satyr clutches a grapevine, embodying life and fertility, but also greed, avarice and inebriation; he, in turn, scoffs at the drunkard. If you look closely, you can see that the man's cap is not a lion's cap, but a sheep's head cap. And the satyr's gaze is sober, angry, and cunning. This interpretation is no coincidence: since ancient times, people have been trying to dump their own sins onto "satyrs" and other supernatural beings, thereby evading responsibility for their actions.
Summing up, interpretations of the painting may include reflections on the duality of human nature, the struggle between primal and the rational, and the recognition and acceptance of darker sides.

«Girl reading Palm»
Norman Rockwell, 1921
«Katerina Botsari»
(Katerina "Rosa" Botsari)
Joseph Karl Stieler, 1841
She was the daughter of the chieftain and hero of the Greek revolution, Markos Botsaris. As a girl, she was captured by the Turks, and a noble family was planning to adopt the pretty Katerina. However, her family immediately began searching for her and eventually arranged for her return to homeland. The pretty Greek girl proved to be a diligent student, and by the age of 18, she was fluent in German, French, and Italian. It was no surprise that she was easily accepted into the court of Queen Amalia of Greece, she was appointed to the post of Lady-in-Waiting.
One day the girl met the king Ludwig I of Bavaria, who was a great admirer of female beauty. The king created a special gallery for his residence, where portraits of the most attractive women in Europe were hung (the 'Gallery of Beauties'). Katerina Botsari was also asked to pose.
A special type of flower, the Rosa Botsaris, was even bred in honor of the beautiful Katerina in 1856 :)
«A Lady in a Fur Wrap»
Alonso Sánchez Coello, 1577~1579
Traditionally attributed to El Greco, it was also suggested to be a work by the Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola or by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, the court portraitist of Kings Philip II and Philip III.
Many have noted the figure's unusual appearance compared to other works by the great El Greco. The new study's authors analyzed the canvas with modern methods: stereomicroscopy, X-ray fluorescence stereomicroscopy (XRF), optical stereomicroscopy, radiography and others.
It has been established that the real author of the portrait is a Spanish portrait painter Alonso Sánchez Coello.
In the 16th century, artists layered their canvases, starting with a ground, followed by a primer, then multiple several coats of paint, and finally, a protective varnish. Technical expertise showed that for "Lady," the layers weren't formed the way El Greco did it: the ground wasn't brownish-red, but light gray. Additionally, experts found important differences from El Greco's style in the sketches, the remnants of which became visible beneath the painting under ultraviolet light.
We don't know who the model was, but it's thought that this lady could have been from the aristocracy or even royalty. According to one version, the portrait shows Infanta Catalina Micaela de Austria or her sister Isabella Clara Eugenia (daughters of Philip II) as Coello often painted their portraits.

«Turk»
('The Turkish Girl'; considered unfinished)
Bryullov Karl, 1837~1839
«The Turkish Girl» by K. Bryullov was painted in St. Petersburg, inspired by his impressions from 1835 expedition to the Ionian Islands & Asia Minor. The journey was organized by the famous patron of the arts and writer Count Orlov-Davydov. While traveling, the artist spent over 3 months in Turkey and was inspired by the oriental exoticism there.
Expressive as her features were, the girl portrayed was probably a creation of the artist's mind. The beauty of an Eastern woman – forbidden and hidden from outside eyes.
Overall, the painting captures the 19th-century vogue for Eastern culture & lifestyle, which birthed a specific style in Europe known as 'orientalism'.
The painting is in the Tretyakov Gallery, and I was lucky enough to see it in person *bragging* it influenced me so much istg

Lieve Verschuier - "Comet Above Rotterdam" (1680)
«Portrait of Madame X»
( & fragments )
John Singer Sargent, 1883~1884
model :: Virginie Gautreau, socialite 'fine' lady
The portrait took a long time to complete, from about winter to autumn 1883. The first presentation at the Paris salon (1884) caused a scandal and shock among the public. The artist's plan to keep the model's identity in secret didn't work out: the members of high society easily recognised Gautreau.
sketches & etudes
The noticeable paleness of the skin and the ear having shade of pink were taken as hint of using cosmetics as a mark of vulgarity and bad taste, associated with fallen women, women from low social classes.
They were discussing both the dress's originally slipped strap and the 'big' model's nose... In short, the painting became an object of ridicule in the gutter press: «a new model for the ace of spades», caricatures inspired by the portrait.
early study in watercolor
Ashamed by the scandal, Madame Gautreau was forced to disappear from social scene for years. The career Sargent had so carefully building in Parisian society was ruined; the artist had to move to London, and then to the USA.
Other artists, other versions
7 years later (1891) Gustave Courtois painted a new portrait of madame Gautreau. The public's response was more positive.
In 1897~98 Virginie Gautreau posed for the artist Antonio de la Gandara. She thought that it would be the best image of her.

«Saint Catherine of Alexandria»
Caravaggio, 1598
The sword symbolizes self-sacrifice, the halo represents divine origin and hope for salvation, the palm branch signifies suffering for the faith, and the wheel with spikes represents the instrument of torment.
