› About Elaine:

Elaine never believed in happy endings growing up, but when she was twenty-five, her mind was changed. That was when she met Caleb, the man who would go on to become her husband. Despite her natural cynicism, Elaine would later describe the meeting as love at first sight. They dated only a brief period before marrying, and she was sure she’d found her happily ever after.

Only a few short years after their marriage, the unthinkable happened. A routine doctor’s appointment lead to the terrible discovery that Caleb was terminally ill. The doctors said there was nothing to be done and gave him a few months at the most. Elaine was heartbroken. She set out to find any possible way to save him. It was almost by accident that she stumbled across a crossroad demon, but when she did, the deal they offered wasn’t one she could say no to; her soul in exchange for her husband’s life. She could live out the rest of her days with him until she died, and then she’d be made into a demon like the one offering her the deal. Elaine didn’t even hesitate.

After selling her soul, Elaine was ecstatic to get home and tell her husband the good news. She knew he would probably be angry at first, but the idea that she’d have decades with him instead of months for it all to simmer over gave her more hope than she’d had since his diagnosis. However, upon arriving home, she wasn’t met with a miraculously healthy Caleb. Instead, she found his body in their bed, his medication bottles empty on the table. The note he’d left told her that he hadn’t wanted her to be forced to care for him as he got worse, hadn’t wanted to put her through something so awful. Later, an autopsy would find that Caleb’s illness was indeed gone, but it didn’t matter. In the end, Elaine had sold her soul for nothing, and there was no getting it back. She knows that, upon her death, her soul won’t join her husband’s wherever he is, and she has no one to blame for it but herself.
