Jews gathered in the woods to observe Shabbat.
Jews in the Woods is a privately organized Jewish youth group which began in New England in 1997, founded by two friends, Dan Smokler and Dan Zimmerman, who sought to create a Jewish community that evoked their Hassidic teacher Josh Lauffer’s shabbat gatherings. JITW has come to be known for its serene, wooded locations, intense praying and singing, and the musical, lyrical and terpsichorean geniuses who frequent its gatherings.
One of the core tenets of Jews in the Woods was pluralism and creating pluralistic spaces; it’s believed that the trichitza (the practice of bringing together Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews in prayer spaces via three gendered sections: men, women, and all-gender, which now is present in some mainstream spaces) was invented at JitW.
In addition, the 2012-13-14 iteration of JitW was on the forefront of trans inclusion, explicitly welcoming trans folks (regardless of passing) in the gendered areas of the trichitza setup and gendered dorms, having both bathrooms in the main gathering space be gender-neutral, and offering gender-neutral dorms, years before these conversations were even happening in most Jewish spaces.
Working on a kind of high concept quilt that's like an imitation of water lilies and lily pads. I'm digging it so far

Quote of the day
I’m seeing a lot of people saying this post changed their brain chemistry, and as a neuroscientist I wanted to say yes!!! Yes it does!
Wanting something requires dopamine signaling, but liking something doesn’t.
If you have a mental illness/disorder that affects dopamine, you might feel that you don’t want to do the things that you like. You do still like them. You will appreciate having done them.
Let your likes guide you.
(If you want to read more, here’s one experimental paper about it. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5171207/ This theory called the incentive-sensitization theory was originally created to explain behaviors in addiction but can be applied elsewhere as well)
Rewards are both ‘liked’ and ‘wanted’, and those two words seem almost interchangeable. However, the brain circuitry that mediates the psych

Go to a furry convention dressed as an 18th century fur trapper. Longrifle, jawtraps, chains, fur hat, big coat made of sewn-together pelts of different polyester neons...
Man. You get it. :^)
omg... OMG! :^D
personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist
hey can y’all maybe ask yourselves why when people of color say things like “this movement I generally agree with has a racism problem” your gut instinct is to downplay and dismiss and say it’s only a few bad apples and that we’re co-opting the larger conversation by talking about it? can y’all examine this instinct in yourselves for a second?
The older i get the more i understand why some people become obsessed with privacy, not because they’re hiding something, but because being constantly perceived starts to feel spiritually exhausting.

Pride month vest project, a patch a day #29: Wheat But Not Bread, Fruit But Not Wine
As my friend Julian puts it, only half winkingly: "God blessed me by making me transsexual for the same reason God made wheat but not bread and fruit but not wine, so that humanity might share in the act of creation."
-- Daniel Mallory Ortberg
This has been driving me insane because this quote is so incredibly Jewish but every time I saw it was completely divorced from Judaism in the version applying it to 'transsexual'.
The original concept that humans complete the act of creation by making bread from wheat is from the Talmud! And the specific "wheat but not bread, grapes but not wine" phrasing is from Jewish theologian Abraham Heschel but it is missing "clay but not bricks".
And among trans Jews the sentiment was already popular before I ever started seeing this specific phrasing so I knew, knew, knew a Jew and likely a trans Jew was involved.
As it happens, Ortberg's friend Julian is Jewish and they have strongly negative feelings about the way the quote has been removed from the context of their life as someone trans and Jewish. They used to have a thread up on xwitter about it but have since made their account private and only have a very terse FAQ online from which you can glean the treatment they likely received when being more open about their Jewishness, relationship to transness, and the interaction of both.
I've always thought there was something extremely Jewish about that quote! I had no idea that Julian is Jewish.
actually it's a green flag when your doctor/nurse doesn't have a social media account
even going into OT I will never ever ever have an account with my name attached that patients could find and I would especially never talk about those patients in any context even with identifying details removed. my goal as an OT would be to be completely anonymous online to my patients. my goal would be that, even if a patient stumbled on my social media, they would have absolutely no way of knowing it was mine.
I make a very small handful of exceptions with doctors and nurses who use their position to advocate for disabled people and people with substance use disorders or fight against medical misinformation but like. the vast majority of the time it would make me trust that doctor or nurse 10,000× less
