𝗮𝗿𝗰 𝗼𝗻𝗲 : 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿

          ANNA cocks her head to the side as she admires the painting in front of her. when they say a picture is worth a thousands words, it only rings truer for the images caught on canvas. growing up, anna felt she could tell whole stories based on only a singular painting, and it couldn’t be chalked up purely to her imagination. art had it’s way of moving people. it was powerful, and emotions like the pain of sadness were the most powerful. “ tragedy, ” she answered the question simply, her eyes never leaving the canvas. “ it’s something everyone can relate to. and… it inspires something to overcome. triumph, well… triumph is the ending of a battle, when tragedy is the beginning. there’s somewhere to go. ” she couldn’t speak much to the story of mary madalene, not having grown up in the most religious household. best she knew was from her college classes, as religion was on of the major inspirations of classic works of art. “ i don’t think it entire discredits all she’s done, though. it think surviving grief, sorrow, is one of the greatest things. she didn’t let it bring her down. she suffered through it and made it to the other side… ” finally, she glanced at the art dealer. “ right? ”

      𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧  𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐬  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞  𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞  onto  an  otherwise  vacant  countenance,  kindles  a  flare  in  her  eye  like  a  firecracker  set  off.  anna’s  answer  is  supplied  with  a  sureness  that  does  not  bend,  does  not  break.  much  like  her.  she  is  again  solicited  to  recall,  with  no  less  than  a  great  measure  of  fondness,  upon  their  very  first  encounter  in  this  gallery,  at  a  function  neither  of  them  had  been  particularly  inclined  to  attend.  it’d  been  but  a  little  ways  off  from  where  they  now  adjourn,  keeping  faith  with  what  a  half  year’s  endeavour  of  like - minded  repartee  has  procured  between  women.  and  it’s  only  in  an  individual  possessing  an  agency  and  disposition  so  detracted  from  hers  that  she  truly  finds  solace.  or,  in  the  very  least,  an  imitation  of  it.  bella  rarely  finds  cause  to  dwell  on  it  in  anna’s  company.     `    indeed.  a  balance  must  be  struck  and  kept,  scales  weighed  down  in  equal  measure   ---   without  the  sting  of  tragedy,  we  tend  very  much  to  stagnate.   `     we  would  know,  you  and  i.  i  have  learned  much  from  you,  as  i  hope  you  have  from  me.

      `    quite  right,  madam.  the  madeleine  was,  in  her  own  right,  an  emblem  of  fortitude.  some  have  even  posited  that,  should  her  steel  and  will  have  saved  her  in  the  end,  she  would  have  lived  forever.   `     bella  inclines  her  head,  dismissing  the  purveyor,  and  makes  to  steer  them  on  along  the  strait  of  artwork.    `    my,  my.  i  take  it  this  opening  has  been  considerably  more  suited  to  your  motivations   ?   anything  find  your  fancy   ?   `

       𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕.  her  history  with  it  is  serially  entrenched  by  chapters  of  heartache  and  sorrow   ;   seemed  to  always  epilogue  in  her  wanton  desire,  and  someone  else’s  grief.  at  any  didactic  front,  the  lessons  it  has  prescribed  her  have  not  flown  unheeded,  and  she’d  lashed  herself  raw  trying  to  imbue  the  worst  of  them  into  sinew,  into  marrow,  lest  she  forgets  what  it  means  to  condemn  someone  with  her  want.  allison  keens  into  the  door  - frame,  arms  berthing  her  torso,  now  acutely  aware  of  how   ---   not  entirely  unlike  the  thin  wash  of  cotton  under  her  touch   ---   threadbare  she  feels,  how  stripped,  how  irretrievably  sorry  she  is  because  she  knows,  even  before  her  throat  is  emptied  of  her  whisper  of  an  answer,  that  she  has  consigned  him  a  fate  she  can’t  veer  them  away  from.     `    come  in,  it’s  going  to  rain  soon.  you’re  just  in  time  for  dinner,  too.  before  you  get  your  hopes  up,  i  haven’t  attempted  to  battle  anything  other  than  the  microwave  for  a  good  three  months,  so  if  something’s  off,  you  have  to  tell  me,  okay   ?   promise  me.    `

      `    𝐧𝐨𝐰,  𝐰𝐡𝐨  𝐝𝐨  𝐢  𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞  𝐭𝐨  𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞   ?    `      the  threat  is  brazen,  brutishly  forthright,  but  not  devoid  of  her  usual  kiss  of   ---   granted   ---   ghoulish  humour.  she’s  not  seen  marina  in  such  a  fretful  state  in  recent  memory,  worry  so  pronounced  against  the  steadfastness  bella  knows  her  to  wield.  it  unnerves  her,  as  she  is  not  one  to  be  so  readily  debased.  that  which  plagues  her  sister  has  long  since  begun  to  take   residency  in  bellatrix’s  own  attentions,  much  as  they’ve  both  taken  to  sharing  all  the  truths  they  learn,  successes  they  garner,  and  the  secrets  they'd  once  kept  sealed  away  in  caskets  and  tombs.  secrets  bella  now  unearths  from  where  she'd  laid  them  to  rest.  she  prises  them  out,  always  just  a  handful  at  once,  and  feeds  them  to  the  woman  she's  grown  fond  of  calling  sister   ;   in  turn,  she  keeps  company  with  marina's  own  devils,  never  shying  from  the  carnage  that'd  drawn  them  together  all  those  years  ago.  this  much  has  always  been  true.  she  has  not  failed  her.  she  will  not  start  now.   `    i  will  always  have  much  more  than  just  a  minute  for  you,  mari.  sit.  your  drink  is  getting  cold.    `

      𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠,  he’s  condensed  into  a  dimunitive  of  his  own  silhouette   ---   an  afterimage  of  himself,  all  shade  and  shadow,  suffused  with  so  much  grey  but  grey  is  such  an  honest  colour,  so  it’s  only  right  that  he  should  translate  that  honesty  into  something  tactile   :   eren  retrieves  a  hand  from  where  he’d  tucked  it  against  his  stomach  and  reaches  with  it  for  harry’s  own.  their  affection  toddles,  is  unsteady  on  its  feet  and  in  its  infancy,  but  the  sweetness  that  croons  to  life  at  the  base  of  his  gut  is  hard - fought   ;   fierce,  untainted  and  not  yet  pained  with  the  horrors  from  their  own  tales.  they’d  earned  this,  to  be  phrased  like  halves  of  an  imperceptible  whole,  to  sit  cross - legged  on  the  plywood  and  harry,  harry's  sheathed  in  a  beam  of  nascent  daylight  slanting  in  through  a  parting  in  his  curtains.  his  affirmation  peels  through  the  silence  and  so  much  gold  is  flaring  about  his  frame,  so  much  warmth,  that  eren  thinks  he  could  make  him  believe  almost  anything.     `    i’ve  got  this.    `     i’ve  got  you.

      𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞  𝐨𝐟  𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 - 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧  𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬  with  the  resilience  of  a  vice  pulled  taut,  debilitating  her  stature,  bearing  down  even  on  the  chin  she  usually  tries  so  earnestly  to  keep  high.  pivoting  on  her  good  foot,  allison  reaches  for  and  curls  her  fingers  about  the  barre,  all  that  unflinching  cold,  unwavering  against  the  heat  emanating  from  her  own  skin.     `    i   ---   yeah.  yeah,  thanks.  i’d  like  that.    `     she  lets  her  head  droop,  and  once  it  does,  once  the  last  dredge  of  zeal  that’d  been  holding  out  for  her  vacates  her  as  well,  allison  almost  recoils  from  how  wretched  she’s  become.     `    does  it  ever  get  better   ?   how  deflated  you  feel,  how   ...   defeated   ?   broken  bones  are  grafted,  tissue  mends.  i  get  that.  what  about  the  piece  of  your  heart  you’ll  never  get  back   ?    `     i  don’t  think  i  have  the  strength,  or  your  kind  of  tenacity,  to  wait,  not  even  for  physical  recovery.  not  even  that.

      𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥  𝐚𝐧𝐝  𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐥𝐲  𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝  𝐢𝐧  𝐡𝐞𝐫  is  braying  to  be  heard,  shrill  and  almost  hysterical  with  the  scourge  of  fear   ---   he  can’t  have  seen  enough  to  presume  the  worst,  not  here,  not  now,  not  when  she’s  worn  her  hands  to  the  bone  forging  their  bond  and  seating  herself  into  a  comfort  she’d  earned  among  a  kind  much  unlike  her  own.  perhaps  too  much.  a  hand,  unquavering,  is  brought  up  to  split  the  distance  she  puts  between  them  and  as  a  safeguard   (  moreso  for  his  sake  than  hers  )   and  almost  placating,     `    𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍,    `     it’s  as  much  a  surprise  to  her  as  it  is  anyone  else’s,  that  her  inflection  is  unmarred  by  the  feelers  of  panic,  of  aversion,     `    please  listen  to  me.  whatever  you’ve  seen,  if  it  counts  for  anything,  i’m   ---   i’m  not  a  monster.  i  can’t  help  this.  i  don’t  inflict  pain  where  it  can  be  avoided,  and  it  can,  almost  all  of  the  time,  unless  i  have  to  protect  myself.  and  i’m  not  going  to  hurt  you.    `

      𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚎𝚢   :   damn,  that’s  a  tricky  one.  you  have  no  idea  just  how  many  i  go  through  every  odd  weekend,  but  lately  it’s  been  don’t  stop  me  now   ---   nobody  even  cares  if  you  can’t  sing  to  save  your  life   (  and  trust  me,  i’d  know  )   because  it’s  just  that  good.  ugh.  does  get  a  tad  bit  more  challenging  to  smoke  through  once  a  round  of  free  drinks  has  been  passed  around,  though.  but  it’s  queen.  ergo.

𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒚 - 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆.   opinion  on  horror  films   ?

      𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚎𝚢   :   i’ve  been  obsessed  with  them,  actually.  kinda  surprising,  given  how  i  used  to  keep  them  at  arm’s  length  no  matter  how  acclaimed,  how  novel.  i  think  i  started  warming  up  to  the  idea  of  them  after  watching  hereditary,  but  i’ve  found  i  gravitate  towards  pysch  horror,  rather  than  the  likes  of  scream  or  insidious.

𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆.   what’s  your  biggest  flaw   ?

      𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚘𝚗   :   i  have  plenty  of  self - defeat.  not  sure  how  to  put  it  otherwise.  not  nihilism,  exactly,  but  almost  overwhelming  desperation  and  haplessness  in  situations  i  know  i  can  manage.  i  could  be  well  on  my  way  to  accomplishing  something  grand,  maybe,  and  the  smallest  setback  would  at  times  propel  me  into  anxiety  and  i  find  it  very  hard  to  get  myself  out  of  that  kind  of  rut.

𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒚 - 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆.   opinions  on  pets   ?   cats  or  dogs   ?

      𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚘𝚗   :   everlasting  companions,  for  sure.  and  dogs,  probably.  i  have  one  myself   !   she’s  an  australian  shepherd,  turning  two  this  year   ---   i  adopted  her  from  a  guide  dog  facility  that’s  affiliated  with  my  pt  intership.

𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕.   are  you  close  to  your  family   ?

      𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗   :   i   ...   i  was.  when  i  still  had  them.  until  i  tore  us  apart,  with  all  the  hardship  i  brought  onto  them.  they  loved  me  as  if  i  were  their  own,  and  i  cursed  them.  now  it’s  just  my  dad  left,  and  if  there  was  ever  even  a  chance  for  him  to  take  me  back,  it  died  off  when  i  ran  and  left  him  to  bury  my  sister  alone.  and  now  i  think  someone  closer  and  dearer  than  the  family  i  knew  has  come  back  to  me,  and  she’s   ---   kind,  beautiful,  and  everything  i’m  afraid  of  ruining.

𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒚 - 𝒐𝒏𝒆.   are  you  a  morning  person,  or  a  night  person   ?

      𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗   :   a  bit  of  both   !    i  do  a  lot  of  thinking  at  night,  and  sometimes  i’ll  feel  oddly  spurred  on  to  finish  all  my  homework  in  the  very  early  hours  of  the  day.  other  than  that,  i  feel  more  at  ease  after  dark,  and  especially  if  i  can  be  alone.  it  means  a  lot  of  sleeping  in,  though.  ergh.

      𝚋𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚊   :   if  i’d  let  myself  be  incapacitated  or  stubbed  by  every  little  thing  that  has  managed  to  stir  even  the  briefest  stroke  of  terror  in  my  heart,  i  wouldn’t  be  here,  entreated  to  answer  you  today.  i  negotiate  with  most  of  them,  you  see,  and  the  ones  i  can’t  seem  to  quell  or  lay  to  rest,  i  brutalise.  i’ve  killed  parts  of  me  that  nurtured  and  were  fodder  for  these  fears.  one  way  or  another,  i’ve  always  managed  to  claw  my  way  through.  though  the  most  formidable  of  them  has  always  been  the  notion  that,  despite  my  prowess,  i’ll  be  struck  down,  removed  from  the  fortune  and  strength  i’ve  accumulated.  as  long  as  i’m  alive,  i  must.  be.  empyreal.  what  other  meaning  is  there   ?

      𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐥𝐨𝐰  𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐬  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭  𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐝  𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬  is  a  snared  sound,  a  scared  sound.  it  punctuates  the  first  throe  of  a  dull  ache  that  begins,  as  it  has  for  the  better  part  of  a  month,  to  gnaw  at  her  and  she  makes  to  soothe  it,  finger  pads  seeking  purchase  against  her  temples.     `    i’d  hoped  i  wasn’t,  but  if  it  doesn’t  sound  absolutely  botched  and  ridiculous  to  you   ...    `     unsticks  her  hip  from  the  brim  of  her  desk   ;   sweeps  a  prolifically  tabbed  manila  folder  off  the  top  of  it.    `    i’ve  been  drafting  and  recording  everything  in  my  dreams,  down  to  the  most  minute  detail   ---   as  concise  as  i  can  manage,  anyway   ---   and  all  of  it  points  to  what  i  told  you  about  before.    `     allison  proffers  the  article,  shuttering  her  gaze  from  the  other.  she’s  already  been  laid  bare,  and  there’s  little  left  to  hide,  just  the  sloughing  tumult  she’s  now  to  endure.     `    you  were  right,  anna.  my  family  didn’t  just  amass  these  weapons  recreationally.  they  hunted.  what  exactly,  i  don’t  know,  but  i  have  a  feeling  i  was  complicit  in  it.    `

      𝐟𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬  𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 - 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐞  as  he  peeks  up  at  her  now  from  behind  the  sheath  of  his  too - long  bangs,  and  the  grin  that  blisters  through  the  din  of  the  melancholy  he’d  been  nursing   (  brows  hunkered  down  low,  some  distant  thunderstorm  or  hurricane  dredging  up  in  his  irises  )   is  testament  to  her  eternal  effervescence.  eren  sometimes  wonders  just  how  many  rainy  spells  he’d  have  to  coach  himself  through  had  he  not,  quite  miraculously  still,  summoned  the  good  judgment  to  befriend  tara  markov  the  day  travesty  nudged  his  withering,  half - starved  body  through  xavier’s  doors.  these  aren’t  the  greener  pastures  they  were  all  promised  at  one  junction  or  another,  but  she  keeps  him  asking  if  they  can’t  permit  themselves  another  day  of  hoping.     `    then  guts  and  gore  it  is.  until  i  get  this  right.  until  𝒘𝒆  get  this  right.    `

𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚘𝚗   :   veggies   !   especially  broccoli   ...   i’ve  been  obsessed  with  trying  to  make  them  taste  halfway  decent  lately.  eggs.  and  probably  a  year’s  supply  of  capri  sun. 𝚋𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚊   :   a  half  bottle  of  ‘90  drc  la  tache.  mm,  four  grand,  that  one.  a  flask  in  the  freezer  ready  to  be  picked  up  for  walks,  and  a  face  mask  i’d  forgotten  to  take  out. 𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗   :   eesh,  about  a  couple  hundred  sachets  of  ketchup  and  barbecue  sauce  i’ve  never  used.  hah.  ooh   !   i’ve  still  got  three  tubs  of  yocrunch  oreo  yoghurt   ...   but  i  bet  they’ll  be  gone  by  now,  my  roomie  would’ve  gotten  to  them.  and  a  chicken  wing   ? 𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚎𝚢   :   frozen  greens,  and  lots  of  them.  leftovers  in  lots  of  tupperware   --   gotta  remember  to  finish  them  before  they  get  bad.  and,  of  course,  a  pack  of  beer.  i’m  trying  to  cut  down.

𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚘𝚗   :   probably  envy. 𝚋𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚊   :   greed.  and  then  some.  i’ve  learned  to  relish  in  it. 𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗   :   someone  told  me  once  that  my  pride’s  gonna  get  me  killed  one  of  these  days,  and  that  i  couldn’t  refuse  a  temper  tantrum  to  save  my  life.  a  mix  of  both,  i  guess. 𝚑𝚊𝚢𝚕𝚎𝚢   :   i’m  not  sure.  i’m  struggling  with  trying  to  get  myself  up  and  out  of  bed,  to  do  anything  lately,  but  it’s  like  i’ve  lost  something  that  used  to  keep  me  going.

    `     𝒏𝒐   ?   𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍,  sweetheart,  i  never  took  you  for  less,    `     bella  leans  into  the  admission,  gives  pause,  and  takes  a  dip  in  the  revelation  herself   --   she’s  not  lying.  doesn’t  have  much  reason  to,  really.  mikasa  is  as  shrewd  as  her  tongue  is  incisive  and  she’s  quite  aware   :   she’s  been  poised  at  the  end  of  it  plenty  of  times.  there’s  an  edge  to  the  girl  that  tempers  her  own,  and  the  time  bled  out  between  them  can  only  have  polished  the  integrity  of  both  women,  not  diluted  it   --   and  so  she  posits  this,  as  an  offering,  and  because  she  could  be  marginally  more  unpleasant,     `    i  tolerate  you,  dove,  but  nothing’s  absolute.  i  would  very  much  like  to  continue  our  little  talks.  don’t  provide  me  with  any  basis  on  which  to  𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆  that.    `

     `    𝒊'𝒎   ---    `     the  reply  is  stunted,  and  what  doesn’t  make  it  past  the  seal  of  her  lips  stays  lodged  behind  like  a  bullet  waiting  to  ring  out.  her  shoulders  are  caged  over  a  menagerie  of  disassembled  parts,  the  scope  of  a  compound  bow  lying  adjacent  to  a  blunted,  silver  arrowhead.     `    i  have  to  be  missing  something,  mikasa.  these  belonged  to  me  once,  and  i  haven’t  the  slightest  clue  why,  but  i  just  know  there’s  more  to  them  than  i  can  siphon  from  just  sitting  ducks  here  all  damn  day.    `     aggrieved,  allison  seats  herself  on  the  stool  and  gives  the  arrowhead  a  final,  offending  prod.  silver.  not  alloy,  nor  military  grade  steel.  silver.
