Mockup Hunting:
I found this bottle mockup and it fit perfectly with the sleek design and simplicity of the visual concept. Unfortunately, I was hoping for something more square-ish but the curved bottle still looks good.Â
Week 10: Repeat Pattern
While extremely simple, the grey stripes add a small recognisable element to my brand identity. I also tried reversing the stripes for an extra effect which resulted in this slightly dizzying pattern.
Front Label + Back Label (Original White Rum - Purple Edition)
Iâve only completed the one label fully back to front, they will be positioned as two stickers on either side of the bottle.
Week 9: Label Anatomy Diagram
I remember seeing this from my research of rum labels, I believe it has all the main elements of a visual packaging identity. It has the brand name, the iconic logo, the type of alcohol it is, the net and alcohol contents plus the limited edition additions in comparison to the original Captain Morgan Rum label.

Imaging Research:
Out of the multitude of images I searched for to place in my mood boards, these four were the ones that stuck out the most. The purple sage represents the âwitchyâ feeling I was aiming for with the Original White Rum label, the red lipstick relates to the target audience of women, the teal fabric creates the idea of being in a classy bar where I imagine this drink would be found and the photo of the woods gives a sense of mystery and intimidation.
All the photos relate to the visual concept through the notions of enchantment, provocation, elegance and superiority. Wicked Rum is for the most mischievous of women and not for those of innocence or virtue.
Week 8: Final Label & Logo Design
While focusing on finalising the logo identity, I made a few more changes to the label layout and visual branding. However, in comparison to the first drafts of this design, Iâve enjoyed seeing this concept mature throughout the process.
New label design with some of the technical items relating to the product packaging. Still have yet to complete the full label for the mockup presentation.
Week 7: Logo + Visual Identity
My chosen font is going to become the logo for my brand along with the four colours featured above with the purple being the âOriginal Colourâ. After much tweaking and fixing, the logo has been finalised and soon my new label designs will be completed.
Font Exploration:
While I was happy with the font I had chosen in my draft label, I was compelled to try other kinds of fonts to see if I could find something better. The font featured on the right had been an old favourite of mine since it had a MILLION varieties to spell even just a single word. However it seemed too âclown-ishâ for the elgenat image that I wanted so I focused more on calligraphy fonts and brush drawn fonts.

Version 2 of my âWicked Rumâ label design. Focusing on the logo using the typography for the word âwickedâ since the skull is too detailed for small print.
Week 6:Â
Basic mockup of the âWicked Rumâ label design. Definitely keeping the second font for the âEditionâ typography but I am looking into other fonts for the first bit. Still a long way to go but there has been progress.
Final layout for my moods boards. Very happy with how theyâve turned out, though they will require some more editing once one of them has been chosen for further designing.
Feedback included high praise for the âDusk Ginâ mood board however there was a little criticism for âWicked Rumâ that it wasnât as aesthetically pleasing as the other mood board.
Week 5: Motivation Post
Even when it feels like you havenât done much, all the days eventually add up to reveal the progress you have made. Small steps are better than no steps at all.
Deciding between these two design layouts for the typography. Originally, the one on the left was my first draft but now Iâm contemplating the second layout is the better one out of the two.

Design Rationale - Wicked Rum (Draft 1)
The aim of this visual concept is to create a rum less directed for men and more for women. The design focuses not on the classic âpiratesâ and âhigh seasâ theme but instead a feminine, elegant and âwitchyâ approach. Wicked Rum uses a minimal layout design to create the image of the mystical illustrations found on tarot cards.
The font choice for this concept was always going to be a decorative calligraphy typeface paired with a classic bold typeface which links to the aim of a feminine liquor, it represents the sophistication and enchanting nature of the target audience.Â
Included in the colour scheme is the colour purple, by following the study of colour psychology which states purple is connected with mystery, luxury and spirituality making it a perfect match for the design concept. Other colours involved in the concept are red, teal and green which were chosen for their connection with provocation, serenity and prestige.
This design concept focuses on a beverage for the sophisticated woman to drink at a classy bar with her friends. Wicked Rum will be a drink for the mature and ladylike woman to enjoy even at the cost of having her red lipstick smear the rim of her glass.
Key Words: Mystical | Elegant | Sinful | Dangerous | Feminine | Enchanting | Minimal | Sophisticated | Provocative | Mysterious
Design Rationale - Dusk Gin (Draft 1)
The inspiration for this concept, Dusk Gin, is ultimately a gin for the younger generation of drinkers. The main objective was to steer away from the sophistication of decorative designs and focus on a modern design using the childish influence of pixelated graphics.
By using a nostalgic design theme and sweeter flavour infusions, the aim is to entice the taste palate and visual preference of young adults. Both the fonts used in the design concept follow the pixelated theme and are set up to look like a classic game âStart Menuâ layout.Â
The simple but bright sunset colour scheme is also to attract younger eyes and help stand out amongst less vibrant gin packaging. The image surrounding this concept is a drink for those summer nights, a drink to be enjoyed with friends and a drink to comfort you through good days and long afternoons. Â
Dusk Gin is a social, cheeky, and seasonal liquor to be had any time of the year, for any and all occasions and to invite you to expand your horizons of liquor variety.
Key Words: Playful | Fruity | Nostalgic | Comforting | Joyous | Summery | Modern | Childish | Unsophisticated | Sociable
