On Esmeralda (THIS IS NOT FRESME)

★ She called him a hypocrite to his face in front of witnesses and he had no procedural response for that. There is no charge you can file against someone for being right.

★ He has condemned people for less than what she does publicly on a daily basis. The fact that he keeps finding reasons not to is information he is actively ignoring.

★ She asked him once what he was so afraid of. He gave her a theological answer. It wasn't what she was asking and they both knew it.

★ He will never say it, that she is the first person in decades who has treated him like his approval was not the point. He secretly needs it.

★ He has drafted her formal charges three times before the Topsy Turvy day. Torn them up three times. Told himself it was strategy. It is not strategy.

On Phoebus

★ Phoebus shows up late to things, disagrees with orders in front of the men, and has been caught twice drinking on duty. Sometimes Frollo wished he can strangle Phoebus

★ He runs on instinct and it keeps working. Frollo has a system. An actual system built over thirty years. Phoebus ignores it completely. This is genuinely maddening.

★ The specific thing Frollo cannot stand is that Phoebus is not stupid. It would be easier if he were stupid.

★ He looked at Esmeralda like she was just a person. Just a person. Frollo has been unable to do that and Phoebus managed it immediately without apparently trying.

★ He outranks Phoebus in every measurable way. This has not mattered once.

On Paris

★ He has memorized which streets flood in March, which gates the guards actually check versus wave through, which parishes cook their tithe numbers. None of this was in the job description. There was no one who knew Paris more than him.

★ The city has a smell in summer that he has never gotten used to. Thirty years. Still hasn't gotten used to it.

★ He issued a sanitation order in 1480 that nobody enforced. He reissued it. Nobody enforced it again. There is a third draft sitting on his desk.

★ He walks the city at night because during the day everyone performs for him. At night people forget he's there.

On Aging & Mortality

★ He is starting to repeat himself in meetings. He has noticed. He does not believe anyone else has noticed yet. He is probably wrong about that.

★ His eyesight is going slightly. He has not told anyone and has rearranged his desk so the candles are closer without making it look deliberate.

★ He was thirty-two when he got the Minister position. Everyone treated him like a joke, a young man in a room full of old ones. He is now the old one and there is a twenty-three year old in the judiciary who reminds him of himself and he has been actively making that man's life difficult.

★ The theology he enforces is the same theology he learned as a boy. He has not updated it once. Very consistent.

★ He will not retire. There is no version of events where he hands this to someone else while he is still capable of doing it himself. He knows this is not entirely rational. He has decided that's not the point.
