Summary: Back at the time when Joffrey was king, the kingās guard got into a fight with the people of flea bottom ending up with many of them injured including Sandor Clegane himself. What will happen when out of all the nurses only Y/N is brave enough to help him?

That day people have been rounding up in the infirmary like it was a tavern. Supposedly a fight started between the locals and the kingās guard in Flea Bottom resulting in a couple guards being stabbed with less than clean knives including the kingās own guard, Sandor Clegane himself.
With a bad stab wound on his leg it was clear that had nothing been done to clean it as fast as possible, his whole body would become infected and heād be dead before the next sunrise.
Sandor was not the only one badly injured though. Quickly, half the beds in the infirmary were taken by bleeding guards, some more than the others and havoc began.
Nurses ran around to each man bringing needles and threads, warm water, cold water, alcohol and burning coals, trying to assess the situation regardless if it was their shift or not. Any nurse available was immediately sent to help because after all, it was the kingās guard.
Amongst those women stood Y/N. Never particularly brave or greatly skilled exceeding the necessary, a good heart and a soft spot for the suffering of others made her a great nurse so the moment she heard the call, she was there.
That didnāt help the cold sweat of dread that washed over her as she saw the amount of people rounding up. She ran to the first one available and once he was treated she moved on to the next.
That was how the evening went.
At night, her shift really started. Y/N, who was in charge of making pansy, linden and lilac teas for fever control, heard commotion in the common room and quickly walked in. āWhatās going on?ā she asked the others who had been standing in a circle almost as it they were planning a strategy.
āThe Hound is acting up in his bed but we donāt know who should go there.ā Y/N frowned.
āWhy does it matter who goes?ā she asked, confused.
āWell weāre scared!ā the eldest nurse exclaimed, shaking a cloth she was holding at Y/N. āHeās mumbling nonsense and he yelled at us when he first came in, nobody wants to deal with that! Heās crazy!ā the young nurses nodded, huddling up together, scared and hoping to Gods they wonāt be the ones that will have to go.
Y/N shook her head and snatched the cloth out of the other girlās hand. āHeās not crazy, heās just an injured man and he probably has a fever. Gods know if he didnāt get infected because youāre all scared of a vulnerable man with a bad temper.ā She growled and walked out of the common room, grabbing a small bowl of cold water along the way and a cup of tea.
The truth was, she wasnāt completely fearless to walk up to the Hound. He was definitely intimidating but something inside Y/N stirred and forbid her from letting him suffer regardless if he did something to her or not.
She walked down the hall between the sleeping guards as the room echoed with the click of her heeled shoes and the quiet mumbling coming from the bed the furthest away. When she reached it, she lit a candle to illuminate Sandorās face. She couldnāt tell if he was asleep or not but he was definitely suffering a lot.
Cautiously, Y/N sat at the edge of the bed and took a piece of cloth from the bedside table. She gently pushed away strands of hair from Sandorās forehead and with the same gentle movements, she dabbed the fabric at the sweat beading on his skin. Sandor threw his head from side to side, groaning and continuing to mumble gibberish to himself.
Y/N smiled through her pity for the man. As scary as he was usually, tonight, Sandor was just as vulnerable as any hurt man was.
She put her hand on his forehead and winced. He was really heating up. Truth be told, she didnāt quite know if he will even make it and that broke her heart. Almost involuntarily, she found herself running her fingers through his hair, caressing his scalp. So deep in her own thoughts, Y/N didnāt even notice how his eyes opened and he was now looking at her looming above him.
āWhoā¦are you?ā He rasped, having a hard time keeping his eyelids up. Y/N gasped surprised but quickly composed herself.
āMy name is Y/N. I came here to help you a bit is that okay?ā She asked, removing her hand from his head. Sandor just nodded, closing back his eyes. āI have a bit of cold water here for your forehead it should help with breaking down the fever.ā She told him before dipping more cloth into the water. She twisted out the excess and placed in on Sandorās forehead. The latter furrowed his brows for a moment before relaxing again and opening his eyes for the second time. He stared at her and she smiled kindly back at him.
āThank you.ā he rasped.
āThatās alright, milord.ā she bowed her head.
āIām no lord.ā Sandor replied before turning his head away. After a moment he added āAm I going to die?ā he asked, barely conscious.
āI canāt tell. You have a big fever but thatās usually the case with nasty wounds like these.ā She said, only half truthfully. It was not that common and she knew by now that he was infected. It was only a matter of how his body will try to fight it, if it will at all.
āWhat a shit way to die isnāt it?ā Y/N looked at him questioningly. āFrom a stab in the leg with a dirty knife. What a joke.ā He huffed, exhausted.
āIām sure that wonāt be the case. Youāll come out of it just fine.ā Y/N stood up from the bed and picked up the teacup. āDrink this please. Itāll help.ā Sandor looked at the cup, then at her. āItās no wine but it will help your body deal with the temperature. Y/N took off the cold cloth and helped him up. She brought the cup to his lips and placed her hand on his back so he didnāt fall. She could feel his back was damp with sweat. He drank some of it and winced at the taste. The girl giggled at his reaction and eased him back to a a lying position. āI should bring you a different shirt. This one needs to be washed is that okay with you?ā Sandor agreed with a nod. Y/N smiled politely. āIāll be right back.ā
She took the bowl of now lukewarm water and walked back to the common room to see the other girls staring at her through the small window. She rolled her eyes and walked past them to the closet.
āAnd? Did he yell at you?ā Asked one of them with a satisfied look on her face.
āNo.ā Y/N replied picking out a clean shirt. āHeās perfectly fine. In pain but fine.ā She closed the wardrobe and turned around. āIām only sorry none of you were smart enough to aid him quicker.ā she retorted
āPsh, you wouldnāt be this brave if you were here the first time trying to help the damn man! He didnāt let anything be done to him other than water and stitches no wonder he got more hurt!ā Y/N groaned and pushed past her.
āIām not talking about then. He doesnāt have enough energy to be stupid now.ā Y/N grabbed more cold water and more cloth on her way out but stopped for a last final comment. "If it makes you feel any better, heās probably not acting like himself.ā A minute or so later she was back at Sandorās side.
āI almost dozed off.ā he rasped.
āI apologise. I shouldāve been faster but Iām here now.ā She said, changing the tone of her voice to a much calmer one. āI brought you new clothes could you sit up one more time?ā She asked and he complied straight away, in sluggish motions. Y/N grabbed the hem of his old shirt and took it off. Sandor shivered as his heated skin became exposed to the cool air. Y/N stole one glance at his body before looking away shyly. She put the new one over his head and helped him put it on. āTake another sip of the tea.ā She let him drink and once they were done, Sandor laid back down. Y/N put the new cloth into the bowl of water and like before, put it on his forehead. His eyes followed her movements until she finished and only then he allowed them to fully close.
āIām done now. I should probably go.ā she said but before she could make as much as a step back, Sandor weakly took her hand. āYes?ā Y/N asked concerned.
āCould you stay til I fell asleep?ā he requested opening his eyes half way to look at her. āIf I donāt wake up at least I wouldnāt be dying alone and miserable. Iāll just die miserable.ā Y/N smiled sadly.
āOf course I can.ā Sandor closed his eyes for the second time and she sat at the edge of his bed. Y/N gently picked up his hand into her own. Her thumb rubbed circles into his knuckles in an attempt to ease his passing if he did do so.
She watched Sandorās face relax and then twist in pain to later relax again. As though out of nowhere she began to quietly sing a song. An old tale of Florian and Jonquil she sang so gently, only to accompany him and not disturb. It seemed to work when soon enough his brows stopped twitching and he became still. Y/N continued to sing though she reached out and placed her hand on his cheek to see if he was still hot. Almost instinctively Sandor leaned into her hand. Y/N grinned in surprise and allowed her hand to linger there a little bit longer, caressing his bearded cheek.
Maybe ten or fifteen minutes later his breathing became even and Y/N knew he had fallen asleep. As to not wake him up, she put down his hand and stood up.
With one last good look at the soundly sleeping guard, she smiled with pity and walked away.

Next day at dinner time, though it wasnāt her shift Y/N came into the common room. The working nurses were filling plates with food for the sick. Y/N said hello to her friends and offered to help, though having only one person in mind. Soon enough she was walking into the hall of beds with a plate in her hand. From afar quickly she noticed the Hound, sitting up on the bed, staring into nothing. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw him alive. All her non working hours she spent wondering whether or not he made it through the night and now to see he had, it filled her with great joy. She quickly made it to his bed and she stood next to it with a smile on her face.
ā Your food sir.ā She said, gaining the manās attention. He looked at her almost as if he saw a ghost but quickly he relaxed again.
āItās you.ā Sandor said making her chuckle.
āYou remembered.ā She sat down on the bed like she did the night prior and passed him the plate. Clegane glanced at her from beneath his eyelashes and nodded in thanks. āI see youāre doing much better than you were then. Thatās good, I was quite scared for you.ā Sandor swallowed his food and turned his attention back to the nurse.
āYes wellā¦ā he searched his mind for a proper thing to say but realization that this was the woman that saw him at his most vulnerable moment. In a way, he felt safe around her and that cleared his mind of any comprehensive thought. āā¦I know that you were probably forced to come help me then but I appreciate it nonetheless.ā He said dismissively and packed his mouth full of more food to hide the abashed look on his face. Y/N smiled and put her hand on his like she did the night before. Sandor gazed at their hands, almost afraid to look at her.
āI wasnāt forced. The rest were too scared to come but I did because I couldnāt stand to see someone suffer. I didnāt care that you might be mean what mattered was that no harm was done to you under my watch.ā Sandor kept staring down, embarrassed beyond words. āAnd you werenāt mean.ā Y/N added, smiling. After some time though she removed her hand to let him eat calmly and left again.
From that moment on Y/N visited Sandor any time she could. In the mornings, to take him on walks once his leg allowed it, at dinner time and at night, everyday until he was fully healed. In time, Clegane grew fond of her even though he tried to hide it very much and Y/N couldnāt hide for long that she grew fond of him as well. When he left the infirmary for good, he still visited her almost every night for a chat during her shift as he walked back to his chamber. At the end of every meeting Y/N would climb to her tip toes to place a kiss on the flustered knightās forehead and heād walk off only for it all to repeat all the same the next night.

Y/N wasnāt sure she has ever seen the infirmary so full as the night blackwater bay became green with wildfire. That day, not a single bed, not a single floor tile wasnāt occupied and supplies ran low. In a desperate attempt to find more ointments and cloth Y/N ran through the halls all the way to her chamber to find anything that could be used to aid those wounded in the battle. She pushed the door open and ran through every drawer and every nook and cranny of her chamber, gathering what she could on her bed. Then, she heard the door close and quickly she turned around.
It was the Hound that stood there and stared at her with a defeated look in his eyes. His face was covered with blood and debris.
āSandorā¦ā Y/N whispered and quickly jogged to pull him into an embrace. āOh thank Gods youāre okay.ā she pulled away from him to look at his face. āYouāre hurt?ā she asked him worried at his lack of words.
āY/N,ā he finally said. āIām leaving.ā Y/N frowned in confusion.
āLeaving?ā
āLeaving the city.ā He said, walking closer to her. āCome with me.ā Sandor rasped, his eyes glowing with a look of hope mixed with desperation. Y/N was speechless, trying to come up with something to say but nothing ever came. āI could protect you. Nothing will ever harm you and youād protect me too.ā He added, instinctively reaching for his sword as if to show her silently that he was capable of what he promised.
āSandorā¦ā was all she was able to reply, overwhelmed by the sudden proposition. She moved away from him and towards the bed. āIā¦ I canāt leave these people. Not now.ā She began gathering the materials from before. Sandor growled and grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly and making her drop it all again. She gasped as her eyes scanned over his face.
āOh, fuck the people, Y/N!ā He exclaimed, growing increasingly frustrated after not hearing an immidiate yes. āIāll make sure you never need anything, never be sad again, Iāll protect you but we must go now.ā Y/Nās lips twitched. She could see the urgency in his eyes and she would give anything to make him happy but at the same time she couldnāt deny her sense of duty. She couldnāt possibly go now and not feel like she has abandoned the people counting on her.
āThat sounds very beautiful.ā she said, moving closer to Clegane again. She looked into his hopeful eyes and sighed, cupping his bloodied cheek. Y/N knew he was serious. Nothing bad would ever happen to her if she had Sandor by her side. She couldnāt lie, the idea was enticing but still those doubts lingered in the back of her mind. āI want to go with you but I canāt leave yet.ā Sandor continued to stare at her, waiting for her to say more. Her eyes jumped around his face, a thousand more thoughts coursing through her mind. Then she started thinking. She started thinking of what she was willing to abandon. Her whole life all she knew was her job. Aiding those in need and not really expecting much in return so she got used to it. Running away from all this seemedā¦selfish.
But when she saw the determination in Sandorās eyes, the hope sheād just agree and run away with him that still shined within something inside her made her think that maybe it wasnāt all that bad. That this is where one part of her life could end and one begin. She wasnāt going to be alone, she wasnāt going to be selfish. She had Sandor and Gods know he needed her.
āY/N-ā Sandor started and she didnāt know if he was going to plead with her or give up but she cut him off quickly regardless.
ā I canāt leave just yet but ready the horse. Iāll bring these things down and weāll meet at the gates.ā She said looking back up with a newfound courage inside as she found a way to ease her conscience but not giving up on the man she grew to love with time. She quickly cupped Cleganeās face with her other hand as well and brought it down to press a bruising kiss onto his lips. With the same force he kissed her back, pushing her to the wall and hitching up her leg. Y/N gasped and pushed him away gently, biting down a smile. āI love you so much,ā she said. "And weāll have plenty of time for that, but now go, my love! Go!ā
