An AU where the black phone on the basement wall was never actually broken. It 'worked'.
There is no mysticism behind the calls Finney answers. It isn't the ghosts of the murdered boys trying to reach him from the afterlife β it is a twisted game played by Albert himself. He meticulously recorded the voices of his previous victims, only to dial the basement later and play back those tapes. Have you ever wondered why the ghostly boys keep repeating the same phrases over and over? They are nothing more than looped fragments of old recordings.
Albert wasn't just keeping Finney captive; he was nurturing him with false hope. While Finney genuinely believed he was finding allies and fighting for survival β whether digging a tunnel or reaching for the window β every single move was orchestrated. Albert scripted the entire 'escape' himself. He knew every attempt beforehand, deriving a sadistic pleasure from watching a butterfly desperately battering its wings against the glass of a jar, driven by a manufactured illusion of freedom.
