LEVEL OF EDUCATION: Bachelor in Plant Biology and Business Management
OCCUPATION: Owner and Florist at Flourish Plant Shop
HOMETOWN: Ithaca, New York
Character Biography
Growing up in Seattle, Selin always loved the outdoors, which her parents instilled into her at a very young age. They grew up by the sea in Antalya, Turkey and wanted their children to grow up with it as well. She grew up hiking Mt. Ranier on the weekends and exploring the variety of things that Washington could offer. Always having an affinity for plants, she dreamed of one day owning her own shop. As a student at UW, she double majored in Plant Biology and Business Management, hoping she could apply all she learned into her own store one day.
Her life was changed there when she met the man she would fall in love with. Jaxson Davis, a pre-med student who also grew up in Seattle, who shared her love for the outdoors. The most impulsive thing she did was marry him before their one year anniversary. However, as time went on, the stresses that they didn't get to experience before they married appeared and it began to affect their relationship. Tensions rose as Jaxson became more immersed in medical school and her dreams of owning her own shop went by the wayside. They fought constantly and it all culminated three years later with her witnessing another resident kissing him. It was her final straw and went home, packed all she could and left. She had divorce papers drawn up and she left the city she loved so much to forget about the memories she made with him.
She moved to Boulder Colorado to start a new life, but it never felt right, so she moved constantly, never staying more than two years in one place and she would work as a florist, but it wasn't the dream she imagined. On her thirty first birthday, she decided that enough was enough, she would do what she needed to own her own florist shop and put down roots. She chose Ithaca, a place her and her ex chose for their forever home. They visited once and fell in love with it and even if she's not with him anymore, maybe it can give her the same happiness it once did.

What could Selin and Jaxson talk about in front of his daughter? She couldn’t exactly ask him about her, or his wife. Except there didn’t seem to be a wife, there was no ring on his finger. Maybe just a girlfriend? Maybe he avoided marriage due to what happened between them? She was unsure of herself and hated the feeling of doubt that ravaged through her. Jaxson and his life was none of her business and she had to make sure to keep her distance, because at the end of it all, he cheated on her and refused to feel anymore pain than she already had.
“You’re welcome sweetheart,” she returned the little girls warm smile, “what’s your name?” She asked softly, trying to avoiding prying into Jaxson’s life that she was no longer a part of. Pulling out all the flowers in front of her, “so I have all these flowers and you put them where you want, then I’ll cut the ends and put it together for you, okay?” She wanted the little girl to enjoy putting together the bouquet for her grandmother, a woman who Selin knew wanted grandchildren. Even when Jaxson and her were still young, his mother wondered about their future kids. Sadly, it never happened for the two of them, “decorate it however you want,” she gently pushed away the little girls hair so she could get a better look.
…
Jaxson had practically repeated a speech in the mirror for two years, waiting for the day they would run into each other again. He knew it wasn’t Piper who was keeping him from muttering a single word, it was the nerves. He thought he would feel more confident in front of his ex-wife but instead all he wanted to do was ask why. Why did she pack up all her things and never look back? Was he really that easy to leave? Obviously he was because here he was raising a little girl all on his own. He inhaled, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans as he let his eyes focus on Piper who had a wide smile on her features, glancing over at the brunette. All Jaxson could do was stand there with a soft smile on his own features at how happy his daughter was.Â
“Piper,” she smiled as she turned her head to look at the flowers. She turned towards them and stuck the tip of her tongue out while she put them together. As Selin leaned over and brushed Piper’s hair out of her face, the little dark-haired girl looked back at her, tilting her head to the side for a second before looking back at the flowers. She finished putting the flowers together. She furrowed her brows as she let her gaze drift back to Selin then over towards Jaxson. “Mommy?” She pointed his ex-wife and the smile that was on his features faded instantly, the man shifted in his stance as he shook his head a little. Clearing his throat, the man knelt down, gesturing for Piper to come here. “Come here,” he watched her get off the stool and walk over towards her. “That’s not mommy,” he whispered as he tried to keep his voice low enough to keep it between them but the shop was small enough that he was sure Selin could hear everything. “I promise if mommy ever comes back, I’ll tell you.” He whispered. He picked her up and let her lay her head on his shoulder, knowing that she was probably trying to keep her emotions in. He walked up to the counter, clearing his throat. “Sorry about that, uh… how much do I owe you for the flowers?”
Amina stood in line by one of the food trucks, glancing around her. All she could do is hope that she wouldn’t run into Maj and his wife because that was something she always tried to avoid whenever there were big events like this. She breathed out as she turned her head to look at the woman standing behind her. “You own the flower shop, don’t you?” She chuckled. “I love that little shop.” And this was who she was, the kind of person who could keep a conversation rolling despite how weird it was to just introduce herself like that.
...
Selin hated the idea of closing the shop up, even for a day, but she realized her mental health needed it and her employees also needed a break. She roamed the food trucks, tasting everything she possibly could as she took in the fresh air. Nodding with a smile, "yes, I do," she covered her mouth full of food that she grabbed at her last stop, "thank you so much, I really appreciate that." She wanted people to feel the joy that she did when it came to plants and flowers. Her mother instilled that into her as a young woman and had always made a point to fill their space with things that brought joy. "Selin, it's nice to meet you, and you are?"

“It beats having to do it alone,” she returned smoothly as she tugged the dish towel from her shoulder and wiped down a space of the bar where someone had recently left. For the most part, she had faith. Faith that she could get herself together long enough to be a mother and to offer whatever kind of coparenting to Jaxson that he wanted, or would even allow. She couldn’t blame him for being weary of her advances, but her intentions were pure and that much wasn’t going to shift. “Lucky for you, doubles are my speciality.” She’d help the woman ease her mind into forgetting, but she’d also ensure that a safe limit was met. Women supporting women, right? A weak smile rested on Luciana’s mouth as she listened to other woman talk. She’d never even came close to that kind of commitment and she wasn’t sure that she ever would. “Looks like you made it out okay,” she complimented, hoping it would count for something. “I’m sorry that everything happened the way that it did and that he’s in town. Can’t be easy, but that’s what I’m here for. To lighten the blow,” she teased with a quiet hum of airy laughter.
...
“Thank you,” she gave the bartender a small smile, as she took large gulps from the glass. She didn’t want to lose her entire head, but a bit to just take the edge off and forget all about her ex husband was what she needed. It didn’t matter that it had been ten years, not when everything she felt all those years ago rushed back to her the moment she laid eyes on him. It seemed as if he had moved on from her and she reminded herself to forget all about him. “You know, as vain as it sounds, I just can’t believe he moved on from me,” she said, warmth flooding her cheeks, “he’s got a kid!” She exclaimed, frustrated at the idea of it, “I mean, I’ve never even been close enough to have a kid with someone else,” she let out an awkward chuckle, “it sounds awful of me to say that, doesn’t it?” The most shocking part of it all was the little girl on his hip as she spotted him in her shop and she wondered all about the life he made without her.
with the admission of not minding her business, josie let out a laugh and shook her head. it was no big deal, really, it wasn’t like she was hiding anything.. and what a thought to inspire some spite within her. she sighed and shoved it down, putting on a smile to throw the girl’s way with her introduction. it might be good for her to get to know her neighbor, you never know when you’ll run out of sugar and need to bother the person next door for some. an old school idea, but.. it still hit, in josie’s opinion. “no issues here, don’t worry. i’m josie,” she gave a nod of her head, finally going to lock the door behind her and turning to the girl she’d just come to know as selin. “busy? i was just about to head out for some coffee.”
...
“Nice to meet you, Josie,” Selin smiled with a wave of her hand as she wondered if this was Jaxson’s girlfriend, or the mother of his child? Her mind raved with thoughts and she tried to push them away, reminded herself she was the one who ended things and left. All Selin needed to do was keep to herself and not trouble herself with the comings and goings of her ex-husband. Just as she was about to leave, shower and get back to her day, the offering of coffee was thrown out and she turned with a smile, “yeah, I think I can do that,” just a little snooping wouldn’t hurt. “Do you mind if I take a quick shower?” She asked, quickly slipping into her apartment and realizing she was making a mistake, but it was too late now as she knocked on her neighbor’s door, ready to learn all about “Josie.”
SEYDA WAS RELIEVED when the person noted her and wandered over. She busied herself with building the bottom of the pyramid so the top wouldn’t tip over. It was only when she was satisfied with her work that she allowed herself to look up at the woman who’d recognized her. Of course, once she got a good look at her, she also recognized the brunette.  “Selin. It’s been a lot time and this is a mess.” She pointed to the store. It felt a lot like her life but she wasn’t going to dwell on that. “How are you?” Her eyes moved towards her and then the card. Not so good, it seemed.
...
Selin helped Seyda as she started to put the pieces of the tower back together, “it’s not too bad,” she mumbled, looking at Seyda as she joined her once more, “see, good as new,” she smiled, letting go of the box of crackers. Shrugging, “oh, not too bad, just living life, I guess,” she didn’t want to go into details about Jax or anything. She was too busy holding that stress in, “working a lot at the shop, of course,” Seyda was originally a customer at Flourish, that was how Selin met most of the people in Ithaca she talked to because she had spent so much time at work. “And you?” She asked, curiously. Selin didn’t want to go into details of her personal problems.

There was so much he had imagined saying when he thought about seeing her again. All the questions, the way he wanted to know what he had done to make her walk out on him without a single word. He brushed his tongue along his lower lip as his dark hues focused solely on her. He hadn’t imagined what would have happened if he had Piper with him when he ran into her again and the fact the both of them still thought about Ithaca, the small little city in New York they said they would move to when everything was settled down after his residency. Did her being here mean she thought about him the way he thought about her? He swallowed as he adjusted Piper on his hip, nodding his head without saying a word because what was he supposed to say? How could he have an honest conversation with someone in front of his daughter like this? He glanced towards Piper who was already wiggling out his arms, nodding her head with excitement. He placed her down on the ground and watched her as she ran towards Selin. He slipped his hands into his pockets, taking a few steps towards the counter as Piper tilted her head up to look at the woman. “Thank you,” she said, glancing at Jaxson who gave her a smile to let her know that she did good. “Up?”

Sadly, it never happened for the two of them, “decorate it however you want,” she gently pushed away the little girls hair so she could get a better look.
“Take your time. I’m here until,” she trailed off, light hues glancing towards the clock she found herself staring at all too often. “Closing. Which, is in three hours.” Not nearly soon enough, but it wasn’t like she had anything better to do. She wasn’t playing mother of the year and the road to fixing every broken part with Jaxson was longer than she’d ever expected. “On second thought, I think I should have poured heavier,” she teased, trying to lighten a moment that seemed inevitably dark. “I don’t think anyone expects to run into an ex, let alone ex-husband.” Bar chat was typical, but she felt bad for the woman and what seemed like crap luck. “It’s none of my business, but, I’m guessing things didn’t end so great between you two? If I’m prying, please tell me to stop. I’m used to people laying it all out for me, so I’m not entirely sure on conversational boundaries anymore.”
...
“Well, I might be closing the bar down with you,” she joked, but the reality of it all was that she wasn’t sure how to feel. Jaxson was in this town, with a daughter and she was dumbfounded. Ten years ago, she left after seeing him kissing another woman, dejected she refused to talk about their problems any longer and filed for divorce. “I’ll definitely get a double with the next drink,” she gave her a smile as she tried to not think about her ex, but it had failed. Nodding, “yeah, when we were married, we talked about Ithaca because we came here on vacation and fell in love with it, I just never thought he would move here.” Placing her chin in her palm with a sigh, “I saw one of his fellow residents at the hospital and him kissing, but problems were there before.” Shaking her head, “we were young, when we got married. I mean, I technically couldn’t drink at our own wedding,” a small laugh escaped her lips. She remembered their wedding fondly, and until he started residency, things had been going great for them.
after such a great night going all of the way into the morning hours, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. and so, she and jaxson were on their way out of the apartment, josie not yet too exhausted to head to sleep. she’d been adjusting slightly to his crazy schedule, and thankfully, she technically worked for herself which didn’t make it such a difficult feat at all.
in what josie believed to be the privacy of her doorway in her ironworks apartment, she pulled jaxson in for one last kiss before they were to part ways. she was planning on heading out for breakfast and he had to leave for a shift at work, so she took advantage of it knowing she likely wouldn’t see him for a few days. not until one of them eventually called up the other, and.. well, history would repeat itself. she waved after him, and in turning around to lock the door, noticed a figure in the corner of her eyes. when she glanced over.. “are you okay? you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
...
Now that Flourish was finally starting to see profits and she had begun to take a step back and let her employees take care of the small things. Finally, Selin was able to get back to running and hiking, just like she had before she took on the responsibilities of owning a business. An early morning had gotten away from her as got lost in her run, thinking about her ex husband. She didn’t want to think about Jaxson, yet, her thoughts were plagued with him and his daughter. Now she had to rush to get ready for the rest of her day.
Struggling with the keys to her door, she dropped her phone and water bottle before finally releasing the lock. It only took a second to see it, but she couldn’t unsee: the man who had been pestering her thoughts. She just caught a glimpse of the back of his head, but she could spot him from a mile away. “Oh, uh,” she didn’t mean to stare, or be weird, “no, uh, just not minding my business.” She reminded herself that he was her ex and that she had no reason to be interested in his dating life or whatever. “Hi, I’m Selin,” she introduced herself to the stranger. The last ten months didn’t give her much time to socialize and maybe things should change.
Jaxson held Piper on his hip as his gaze focused on the woman in front of him. Being thrown back in time to all of their moments together. Their wedding album still safely tucked under the bed in his apartment because he never understood what happened between them. He had been a stupid kid who was ambitious and not willing to look at things from her point of view. In his eyes, she couldn’t understand the dream he had of becoming a doctor. He swallowed, pulling himself out of his thoughts when Piper tugged on his ear. “She asked about nana’s flowers,” she giggled as she laid her head on Jaxson’s shoulder. His dark hues adjusting back to the woman in front of him as he breathed in deeply. “They are still the same,” he found himself saying as he took a step closer towards the counter, nodding his head a little. “That sounds great.” Piper raised her head, looking towards the woman behind the counter. “I help?” She asked, furrowing her brows. “No, no. You can’t help her, Pip. You have to let her do her job.”
...
Selin was at a loss for words, seeing Jaxson in front of her, holding a little girl in his arms. She had left him, yes, but not because she stopped loving him. He had broken her heart and she left without another discussion about her feelings of neglect. She was tired and frankly, insecure. Her husband was becoming a doctor and knew even before that the effect he had on other women, so the easiest way out was to leave and end things without another word. Nodding, “let me put something together,” she forced a smile, remaining as calm and level headed as she could. As she walked away to disappear into the back and maybe shed the few tears she was trying to hold back, she heard a small voice interject and she stopped, “what if I go grab a few stems and you can help me put it together?” She offered, remembering that she created this store to set herself apart from the big chains. Even if it was Jaxson in front of her, she would put this store first. Grabbing a few things like scissors, tape, ribbon and baubles to decorate, she set it out for the little girl to help her design what she had wanted.

SHE HATED IT HERE. It was something she normally said on a daily basis….. but today, hating being the manager of greenstar grocerer was realer than ever. “Who the fuck does this?” Seyda asked, knowing full well a little snotty kid had come around the pile of boxes they’d placed in a pyramid and taken a bunch of the bottoms one out, leaving it unstable. She’d been holding it for about twelve minutes, or so her watch said, though it felt like an hour. “I got rid of the stupid walkie talkies that didn’t work half the time and this is what— hey, you!” She kicked a box of crackers off to a nearby shopper. “Can you hold this box in place? Apparently my staff is busy counting banana’s or something and I’d rather not have to clean up veggie crackers today.”
...
Looking at her cart, Selin wondered if she radiated sad single plant lady with the bottles of wine, meals for one and the small calathea plant that was in desperate need of saving. Business was booming, yet here she was, shopping for one yet again. She had always prided herself on being self sufficient and independent, but the sudden reemergence of her ex husband had sent Selin into a tail spin. A box of crackers sliding against her feet brought her out of the self deprecating thoughts as she nodded, “yeah,” walking away from the cart, she helped the woman out, “Seyda?” She asked with a small smile, remembering the other woman being a customer of Flourish, “god, this seems like a mess,” she nodded towards the towers of boxes that was currently being held very precariously.

“Lucky for you, I specialize in good times and awesome drinks.” Plus, she was always ready to help out another woman in need. With a bright smile, Luciana opted for a personal favorite rather than the adventurous drink she’d been leaning towards. Half rum, half coke, and a lime slice on top for good measure. With a mixing straw placed perfectly at the side, she pushed the drink across the bar and tossed the tea towel over her shoulder. “So, does this mean that you’re trying to get something off of your mind, or are you working up the nerve for something? I started you off with a personal favorite of mine. Rum and coke goes down easy and is the definition of a good time. If you need something stronger though, I can do that too.”
“Thank you,” she sighed, as the glass was slipped right in front of her, “well, let me try this and we’ll see what else I’ll need,” she teased. A strong and stiff drink was what Selin needed tonight. The odds of living in the same city as her ex husband was little to none and yet, here she was and he had a daughter, a small child in tow. She wondered if they had still been together, would they have had a child? There was no point in pondering things that wouldn’t be and all she could do was focus on the reason that brought her to Ithaca. “More like trying to get something off my mind,” she sighed, “my ex husband happens to live in this city as well, by chance and I wasn’t expecting it.” Ever since the day she left him, she’d been trying to run from her past that included Jaxson.
Settling into her spot behind a new bar was the easy part. She’d moved around, jumped from job to job for what felt like a lifetime now. She’d smile through every unwarranted advance made her way and she’d play into the tipsy teasing offered by the patrons she’d come to know with time. “I’m serious, you have to try it. It was a favorite for everyone back at the bar I used to work at. It sounds… absolutely insane, but I promise you won’t regret it and if you do, then it’s on the house.” Was she overly confident in the handcrafted cocktail that had once been a fan favorite? Maybe, but she was feeling adventurous for the night and she hoped the person on the side of the bar was feeling the same. “So, are you going to give me a chance or do I have to try and persuade another customer tonight? If you want, I’ll even tell you everything that’s in it. That way, you can tap out fairly if it’s not for you.”
OPEN STARTER: loco cantina.
...
Selin was still learning the ins and outs of Ithaca. Instead of socializing and finding her way in the new city, she was trying to make sure the business she started was going well and that meant early mornings and long nights spent at Flourish. Now that things were starting to fall into place and she was able to hire a few employees to take care of things, she treated herself to a new place every night. Tonight was Loco Cantina. Making herself comfortable at the bar she nodded to the stranger, “honestly, you can give me whatever,” she smiled, “I just want to have a good time tonight.” She just wanted to enjoy the new city she lived in and forget all about seeing Jax at the shop. Selin wouldn’t have come, had she realized he’d beaten her to it, but she was invested since her store was doing well, finally.
