Dr Han Taeho is an aspiring neurosurgeon in his second year of practice. He works tirelessly, a work ethic he has adapted from a young age from his mother.
Taeho grew up in a rather unforgiving environment. He never knew who his father was, and his mother was way too young to raise a child on her own. This is also the reason why he had to spend a lot of his time with his grandparents growing up.
What Taeho didn’t know back then is the fact that if his father had stayed in his life, he would not have to live such a hard life. He was the illegitimate son of the married heir of Myungwoo COR Oh Geokhwan and his then mistress, singer Han Minyoung.
The first few years of his life were nothing special until his mother decided to marry Han Jaehyun, her manager at the time, when Taeho was 7 years old. Mr Han was not a nice man, in no way at all. He was and still is lazy and unforgiving, he put a lot of pressure on both Taeho and his mother, who now was nearing her 30s and with that was nearing the end of her career, a fact that Mr Han would constantly remind her of. Young Taeho would often suffer under the abuse of his stepfather, both verbal and sometimes physical.
When Taeho turned 10 years old, his mother gave birth to his half-brother Taejoon. His younger brother was the center of the attention and was treated much much better than Taeho was from both parents. This prompted Taeho to resent the child, and to this day causes some tension in the relationship of the brothers.
When Taeho was 11 years old, he was involved in a car accident with his mother. The cause for this is undisclosed to Taeho to this day, but his mother had demanded his biological father to pay and help her in raising Taeho. His biological father feigned agreement and sent both on a death trip, which luckily did not end fatally for the two. However, Taeho’s mother remained in a coma for 2 months and to this day suffers from general epilepsy caused by the severe trauma to the head.
This whole ordeal, although quite traumatic to an eleven-year-old to witness, caused Taeho to develop an interest in the medical field and was a key trigger for him choosing to specialize in neurology and specifically neurosurgery.
This verse is to cater to the younger muses out there since it is weird to put a 30-year-old in every kind of plot one stumbles upon. This verse is tweaked to be in our timeline, so although it is a younger version of Taeho, it does not play in the past.
Taeho is a 21-year-old med student who is in his second year of pre-med. He’s messy and struggles to live from one day to the other. He works occasionally at a bar and gives piano lessons to keep himself over water. When he has some time to breathe, he goes jogging and sometimes he walks his neighbor's dogs.
Taeho is quite sarcastic and sharp, but he is not mean. He is an idealist in every sense of the word.
Taeho’s mother dies in the accident when he was 11 years old due to severe head injuries. Traumatized and suspecting foul play, Taeho becomes interested in solving the case of his late mother.
What leaves an even more bitter taste in his mouth are the strange men dressed in black that had attended his mother’s funeral. Taeho knows that they are involved in his mother’s death.
Taeho, studious and smart, becomes a forensic scientist who works closely with the department of violent crimes. 15 years from the fatal accident, Taeho opens a personal investigation with a detective he has befriended. Over the course of his career, Taeho learns that he is the illegitimate son of one of the most influential men in South Korea and makes it his duty to bring him down.
Oh Taeho grew up the illegitimate son of Myungwoo COR’s heir, Oh Geokhwan, and as such enjoyed a life of extravagance from a young age. He grew up sheltered and catered to, even if his stepmother resented him and he never developed a real bond to his father either. The only real familial relationship he built, was with his half-sister, Oh Rain, who is 5 years his junior.
Taeho never really learnt who his biological mother was either, and to be quite frank, he never cared to try to learn. His wild guess went to the woman whose funeral he had attended when he was 11 years old, but it was a question his father never would give him the satisfaction of answering.
Taeho, as the story usually goes, grew up quite a troubling child. He made up the lack of attention from his parents by bullying and terrorizing his school. And that until his bullying drove a student to suicide. As a reaction -- and to further marginalize him, Taeho was sent to finish school in the US where he spent 5 years of his life at a private boarding school. Nonetheless, Taeho grew up to be quite charismatic and discovered his love for grand parties and wild sex.
However, at the age of 20, Taeho’s father fell ill and prompted Taeho to return to Seoul and prepare to take over the firm as the only son of the family. Taeho also learned that his father expected him to marry a girl Taeho had known from childhood. She was the daughter of a business partner of his father.
Taeho agreed on taking over his father’s business, even if his own passion lied otherwise. But he only did so with one final act of rebellion: when he turned 25, he married his secret girlfriend of two years, Kang Soojung.
Although the marriage has lasted to this date, it is not a happy one. Taeho is not a faithful husband -- lives by the Kennedy lifestyle -- which caused his wife to fall into alcoholism and depression.
Goo Dongmae was born as the son of a Baekjeong, a butcher, and as such was part of one of the lowest classes in Joseon. His family was often not even regarded as people and were treated worse than animals, humiliated every day.
Dongmae is eventually forced to flee the country with a group of singing beggars when his mother killed her rapist who was of a higher class, which caused both of his parents to be brutally beaten to death. In his escape, he is helped by a noblewoman. And although he is grateful, Dongmae driven by anger against the higher classes and Joseon as a whole, ridiculed the noblewoman.
Eventually, Dongmae crossed over to Japan where he caught the eyes of Kokuryukai’s top leader, a society part of the Yakuza. Dongmae was quite skilled with the knife as he had been leading it since he was young which made him a talented swordsman.
And although he had denounced Joseon many years before, when the Japanese returned to the country, so did Dongmae who had now a group of men behind him. Now, it was his time to get his payback, and he began to terrorize and control the people of Joseon.
